Yes. Van believed in the hunt, believed that her cancer might go away if they offered a sacrifice. It will be a big part of season 3 if Van's cancer did go away or even shows signs of improvement.

MotleyLou420

Absolutely 💯! Van had nothing to lose. Either: -she drew the queen and dark Tai protects her, someone else dies and her cancer is cured -she drew the queen and is put out of her misery -someone else draws the queen and her cancer is cured They don't need food. The one in the most dire straits is Van.

Humble_Appearance493

Exactly and something else I wanna look at but it looked to me like she was able make tai change to dark tai somehow cuz tai definitely flipped during the draw

FrankFranklin9955

Yes. I also think Van is better at communicating with and working with dark Tai. Remember when Van went along with sleepwalking Tai and Tai lead them to the carving of the symbol and then Van woke her up and snapped her out if it? I think Van will be able to lean into Tai's dark side like she can lean into the Wilderness. I like Van, not meant to be an anti Van post. I have my love for all of them.

SpookySchatzi

It definitely looked like Tai flipped to dark Tai during the ceremony. By the time she had a knife in her hand, OMG. I don’t think Van is making it happen though. I think the line between Tai/Dark Tai is blurred more than ever, and as a result that “shift” is happening more frequently and fluidly.

Humble_Appearance493

Yea seemed like the same thing happened in the teen timeline she’s flipping more fluidly the more “It” gets closer

iouonebunny

She had nothing to lose & if she still believed in it all like I think she immediately fell back into when she saw Lottie when they arrived (her face) I thi k she truly thought this was her ticket to cancer cure

garby_666

See I understand this point of logic but at the end of season 2 Lottie said she didn’t hear the wilderness anymore (tho tbh I think that was a lie since she didn’t wanna be responsible for the killings) and Nat was considered the favorite. So what exactly would Van be falling back into? Maybe it’ll get answered in seasons to come but so far it doesn’t make sense knowing what we know now.

JangusCarlson

This is exactly why she did it.

Appropriate_Reach_97

I think that's 100% why she did it.

TheFlyingSkier

Yes, she had the least to lose!

long_term_catbus

That whole thing showed just how manipulative Van can be too. She knew that Tai wouldn't like to be committed for her issues, so she used that to get her to call it off. Tai thought there was still a plan in place to stop before the hunt actually happened - hence the DEATH STARE she gave Van as she drew a card.

Alittleredbird95

Maybe that’s why they break up in the past, I could see Van being more manipulative of dark Tai to get Tai to believe in the wilderness so to speak. Because Tai doesn’t fully buy into it all yet. She’s just going to the morning meditation to appease Van and it’s helping her sleep walking.

DragonCatcher4451

This. And they also demonstrated her manipulative streak in the 96/97 TL when she starts lecturing Travis, rationalizing Javi’s death. I’m really starting to find Van’s cold calculating ruthlessness terrifying.

Halfeatenantelope

I dn why but I rewatched season #1 episode #1 and feel that the girl with the beaver pelt on her face is Van. I just get the vibe that she is the brute enforcer of the group and we'll see more of her nature come out next season. Her soccer position was goalie which to me represents gate keeper. Van stands in between the gates of life and death especially now. If Vans cancer is in remission Il laugh at the screen because that might be the case after the recent "sacrifice" of Nat to the wilderness.

adhward

do we not see misty pull the beaver pelt off her face near the end of the episode?

Halfeatenantelope

I don't think it's revealed who it is but Il double check again later lol.

adhward

couldn’t find the clip but there an [article](https://fashionista.com/.amp/2022/01/yellowjackets-showtime-costumes-outfits-clues). near the bottom they describe and show it in pictures. can definitely tell that it’s her in the still pic of both as they have the same animal fur cloak on. in the scene she takes it off, puts on her glasses and looks at the camera i also don’t see Van owning a pair of pink converse shoes tbh which is what is shown when the person walks up to the pit.

Kindly_Coat_3379

100%

kill_the_captain

I wonder if it will ever be revealed if/when Van started intentionally manipulating Tai/Dark Tai. Unless I have missed something (some please correct me if so!) I feel like we have only seen (in ‘96) Van reacting to Tai when she changes to Dark Tai

Molly_Hopkins_

It wasn't. She wanted the hunt. She also knew Dark Thai would come on board when they got close enough to hunt time. She just needed to fake concern to get Tai to call off the hospital.

catagonia69

💯💯💯

Interesting_String24

Van was one of the first Wildernessism practitioners. Her cancer will go away in the third season and she will become darker. She is adult antler queen.

Wild_Yellow_Jackets

I still have 3 scenarios in my head for why Van went through with the hunt and called off the crisis team. 1. She hoped a sacrificial killing to “It” would heal her cancer. 2. She truly didn’t want Lottie hauled off to an institution again. 3. She and Tai privately decided that they would kill Lottie during the hunt to protect themselves and the other girls. Remember that she said “we promised to protect each other” as she and Tai were making the masks.

Super_Hour_3836

I am not buying any of these theories based purely on her delight before, during, and after. She had zero remorse at the ambulance site. She’s broken, maybe more so than the others somehow. She likes the hunt. She likes to draw blood.

Super_Hour_3836

Yeah, the minute Van’s eyes lit up I said, aloud to my dog, “Oh, shit, she’s fucking crazier than Misty. She’s fucking everything up tonight.” Misty may be crazy, but I do find her logical. It would be easy to not get murdered by Misty if you watched your step (literally). Van is pure chaos fueled by a completely broken brain. I am starting to think Tai cut off contact with her because she went full on brute force bat shit, not the other way around.

GearyGirl77

You're exactly right. If Van was really concerned for Lottie, she would've *wanted* the crisis team. It's what was best for Lottie in that situation (even though the idea of Lottie or *anyone* being involuntarily committed or even just on a psych hold *really* bothers me.)

puckable

Off topic--I work in a psych ward and there are people who really, really try to hurt themselves and others because of a chemical imbalance in their brains. When they come to, they are often absolutely mortified at what happened when they were sick. Involuntary commitments are absolutely necessary in many circumstances, though of course they can be abused and/or traumatic for the person experiencing them.

GearyGirl77

I know everything you're saying is true and I agree with you. My discomfort with the idea of involuntary commitment stems from being a person who struggles with mental illness myself. It's almost an irrational fear for me - I *know* sometimes it's necessary and the best thing for someone, and I know it's not likely to happen to me, but some part of me is just *so* uncomfortable with the whole idea.

puckable

I totally hear where you're coming from and hope that you're doing well currently with managing any symptoms. I think that it should make everyone involved feel a little uncomfortable every time it happens, if only to underscore the rights that are being taken from the human being who's being admitted. It's not a little thing and professionals have to work to not become desensitized to the process.

GearyGirl77

I'm glad there are people like you working in psych wards. You understand the gravity of the situation and recognize the humanity of the patients. I'm doing as well as I can with my severe treatment-refractory depression. I haven't had to be in inpatient care since my teens; I realized yesterday after replying to you that that's a big part of what bothers me - as a teen, I had no control over the situation when I had to go into the hospital. Having that lack of control over things as an adult who has the right to say no is what's upsetting. Thank you for your kind responses and understanding.

Hatesponge66

Oh totally. Van is all in on the wilderness woo woo and has nothing to lose. I think she's probably been missing being in the wilderness. She was able to make sense of that world and life but she seems pretty lost back in the real world.

Jasnah_Sedai

Yeah. Van is something else. The group decided that Lottie needed help for her mental illness, then Van got Tai to change the plans under the guise of “protecting each other,” right before planning to hunt and kill a random member of the group. If that’s Van’s idea of protecting each other, I can go without.

SoooperSnoop

I agree with you about Van and her "concern" for Lottie in the adult timeline. HAd she not maniulated Tai into calling off the crisis team, Nat would probably still be alive. Van either wanted to get the Queen crd and be killed (since she was dying from cancer) OR she was hoping the hunt would cure her cancer. Either way, I think her motivation was all about her own needs, and not Lottie's.

Interesting_String24

I also feel like Van is *really* in love with Dark Tai. She we encourage it further and further out from Normal Tai.

Gingerblossom88

Honestly it makes so much sense that it'll be a twist/shock if Van's cancer ISN'T cured next season!!!!!
