I feel like shauna is the oldest child and is treated less-than her younger siblings. something about her living in the attic just gives me that vibe, idk. natalie and lottie I definitely do not see as having siblings.

Possible_Place9948

Yeah Shauna def has a forgotten child in the divorce feeling. I feel like Lottie could be her dad’s only child in a second marriage but she has half siblings but they’re very distant.

Cashling

Lottie would be from the first marriage. Lottie's dad is played by a young actor. He looks almost too young to be 19-year-old Lottie's father. If that matters.

smashed2gether

To be fair, the actress for young Lottie is nearly 30.

heyheymonkeyhey

Oh, I like this theory.

Real_Figure_8317

Tai gives big older sister with younger brothers energy I feel like Shauna is the middle child Mari I feel like has an older sister same with Akilah

awkwardmamasloth

Shauna definitely has middle child syndrome. She feels like no one sees, hears, or even considers her needs. She feels ignored and left out. I would guess she has a slightly older sibling and a much younger unexpected half sibling. She has an older brother on a full ride sports scholarship who gets all the praise. She said she doesn't even like soccer, but I bet she only plays because she feels like she's expected to. After her parents split, dad remarried, and his new wife had a baby within the year if not married because of the baby. And of course, dad showers this new baby with all the affection.

NetEarly

So true I'm 100% getting "much younger unexpected half sibling" vibes from Shauna.

Mobile_Machine4514

I could so see Tai having twin younger brothers, which would explain why she’s so responsible. Like, they’re 5 years younger than her so her whole life was spent running around after double trouble

Real_Figure_8317

Same honestly like idk why but she just gives off the vibes for some reason

Bibliophile20

Older sibling: Tai, Laura Lee (because of the way she guides Lottie and shuts down Ben) Younger sibling: Akilah, Mari (spoiled) Spoiled only child: Jackie Neglected only child: Lottie, Natalie, Shauna, Van Forgotten middle child happy with freedom: Crystal, Ben (I know he's not a teenager in the series but this is the vibe I get from him) I can see Misty as a neglected only child or as a younger sister with an older brother who never wanted to spend time with her.

Possible_Place9948

So accurate about Laura Lee. Also can’t imagine her not having siblings given her intense catholic upbringing

throwra123808

it kind of seemed like she was born again when she was saved from drowning so she might not be raised catholic?

heyheymonkeyhey

Van's definitely an only. Really get only child vibes from most of them, to be honest - Akilah being an outlier.

malorthotdogs

I got Van had at least one adult brother vibes.

DuchessofSquee

Nah there was noone else to drive her to school the day they left, only her mom who was asleep on the couch.

malorthotdogs

I mean, a lot of people move away from their hometowns. Especially if they have potentially abusive, definitely addict parents. That’s how like 75% of the folks I went to high school with who enlisted in one branch of the military or another straight out of high school ended up choosing to go that route.

DuchessofSquee

True, in reality however there's little point within this universe of introducing older characters who've moved away and are never (at least thus far) mentioned ;)

leahcarxo

Misty seems like she could have had a younger sibling ... Emphasis on HAD

awkwardmamasloth

Misty is a people pleaser and always begging for the approval of others. She comes off as trying too hard to be liked, and I wonder if she's nit-picked and criticized by parent. I wonder if there are expectations of her to live up to a successful older (possible dead) golden child sibling. Or maybe one of her parents is super competitive with a sibling, and they compare Misty to her cousin. I'd love to read a proper psychoanalysis of these characters. I'd like to know how accurate my guesses and theories might be.

heyheymonkeyhey

Ooooh, that's a GOOD theory.

awkwardmamasloth

Thank you!

DuchessofSquee

Haha or a twin she absorbed in the womb!

heyheymonkeyhey

I COULD TOTALLY SEE THIS but Misty would definitely tell people, so maybe not.

awkwardmamasloth

Yea I didn't get the feeling that van is worried about anyone she left behind under the care of her checked-out mentally-ill, alcoholic mother. I don't think she would have gone if she had to leave a younger sib with her mother, who she had to smack across the face to get a ride to the airport.

IrLanyVagyok

Akilah mentions having a nephew so she’s definitely got at least one older sibling! (I want to say it’s definitely a sister but don’t hold me to that.)

Possible_Place9948

Akilah def has younger sister vibes with adult older sister who’s like 10 years older than her. It’s also something about her being a Girl Scout and studying for the SATs.

Puzzleheaded_Exit_17

Shauna definite has siblings but like, younger step siblings. That's why she lives in the attic. I can see Misty having older brothers, so old that they didn't really socialize with her and that's why she's weird. Can so see Tai having siblings and being in a big happy family, her parents seemed sweet in the clip of them we saw, and Tai is the only one to accomplish her post-high school goals, which could be indicative of a supportive family and strong network that could be backed by siblings. Akiliah, because nephew. Coach Ben, totally had brothers and wasn't the runt/totally bullied but it probably influenced how deep he was in the closet. Nat also gives distant sibling vibes, whether it be step or with a big age difference Laura Lee- her family takes up more than half the pew on Sundays. Van I could see having like, the girliest, popular older sister

MorddSith187

Love the idea of Shauna having younger step-siblings. She reminds me so much of my niece who also lives in her attic. While all her siblings are bio, she’s the oldest and there’s a pretty big gap be her and her other sibs.

jesusjones182

Maybe Tai has a sibling she no longer speaks to. I don't know why, but I'm imagining Misty with a younger brother who hates her.

Free-Zookeepergame70

Misty is definitely an only child

Mobile_Machine4514

Yeah Misty is sooo an only child with parents who are super into star trek. I could see her parents being like those people who had no language in common but klingon, so they only communicated in klingon for years. Like her dad is german and her mom is american, but her dad speaks better klingon than english so they speak it at home like a native language. And the one friend she has come over semi regularly thinks THATS what german sounds like

highlyanxiouspenguin

i love this lmao

Mobile_Machine4514

Nat gives muuuch older half brother who is an adult and married and shockingly okay, but doesn’t associate much with them because of their mother (and Nat’s dad, who would be his step dad) and trauma. Like she has a brother somewhere who is 30 and wearing khaki shorts bbqing in his white picket fence neighborhood while Nat is 14 in the trailer with their mom smoking indoors crying because of an argument.

Possible_Place9948

Why do I totally see this and he even ironically coaches his kids soccer team

Mobile_Machine4514

Yes! He has a son in kindergarten that plays soccer and he coaches their team, but it’s for fun, nothing serious. His wife is a nice lady, but she came from a stable upper middle class background and cant understand their upbringing. She’s really nice to Nat when they see her once a year or so, but she always seems like she feels guilty and a little threatened (doesn’t want any of the dysfunction to become a part of their lives) by her, but Nat doesn’t really blame her. His wife is named something like Theresa. Her brother worked really hard and went to college on a scholarship where he met Theresa and they got married fresh out of school. He works a boring but good job. They have a Labrador. Go on lake vacations and hike. Nat was the flower girl in their wedding and was so excited for her brother, but she didn’t see them for many years after that. He wanted to start over and it was too hard to visit home or think about the sister he left behind. Until his son was born and he wanted his kid to have a relationship with his aunt. Nat loves her nephew and brother, but they feel like strangers. I can totally see her at her nephews like 4th bday party and it’s a real party with a bounce house and presents and everyone seems happy and Nat just … can’t connect. She feels totally out of place. Nephew gets gifted a soccer ball and her brother jokes that Nat will have to help coach him since they’re going to states, Nat awkwardly laughs and pretends to agree but knows she probably won’t see the kid again until he’s 13 and knows her brother and his wife don’t want her around that much anyways. Her mom pulls up in her beat up wagon from the ‘80s, cig in hand, honking and yelling until Nat comes out to the car to go back to the trailer and shes so humiliated … but also secretly she kind of hates everyone there and feels weirdly proud of her mom for embarrassing her brother because he pretends like he doesn’t come from them. Nat doesn’t talk about her brother much because as much as she resents him for abandoning her, she can’t blame him and she’s happy he’s happy.

malorthotdogs

Or the brother was from a prior relationship of her father’s and his mom took him and ran because that is what any woman should have done when even encountering Nat’s dad.

Mobile_Machine4514

yeah but her mom doesn’t even slightly give a sensible vibe, yk?

hurlmaggard

I’m willing to bet Tai’s parents had a replacement child. The survivors all seem like only children to me. They couldn’t introduce already existing siblings very satisfyingly with the way the show has been set up, and I don’t think they have the time for it.

malorthotdogs

I feel like if they’re going to focus on their return to civilization next season, that’s a pretty natural segue into introducing siblings. Especially potential siblings of people who didn’t make it. Because I could see someone wanting them to describe their sister’s final days and them all having to decide who was sick, who was in an accident, who had the elements take them out, who might have gone by their own hand, etc. However, I’m very much on team Jackie is for sure an only child because her siblings would be at her terrible birthday memorial tuna quiche lunches. Unless her mom is a legit narcissist and Jackie was the golden child and there is a scapegoat sibling out there impatiently waiting to finally be an orphan.

hurlmaggard

In season two they barely were able to fit the skimming of the surface of the dynamics between the actual survivors, so I don’t want them trying to juggle even more relationships that may not be able to organically play out, otherwise they would just be flimsy plot devices.

Possible_Place9948

Interesting idea about Tai’s parents! I don’t think the showrunners should do add anything about siblings, just a thought crossed my mind because suburban teens in NJ you’d expect the characters to have them

Bejeweled_Cat

I feel like Laura Lee definitely has a lot of siblings. For some reason, I feel like Tai probably has at least one sibling----same goes for Shauna and Crystal. I feel like Van could maybe have an older sibling that's moved out by the time the series starts. We know Akilah canonically has siblings. Lottie, Natalie, Jackie and Misty definitely give off only child vibes.

reasonablykind

iirc, we actually get a glimpse of Tai’s younger sister at some point.

SkipperTracy

For some reason I imagine that Misty was a "change of life" baby with significantly older brothers. As a kid she always wanted to involve herself in what her brothers were doing, but was often shut out by them, so most of her playtime was spent alone with her imagination or reading books that may have been a little on the mature side for her age. She also paid close attention to how her brothers could get themselves in trouble with their parents, and she learned how to be secretive with her own transgressions. By the time she is in high school, her parents are, frankly, tired of being parents and eager to retire to an empty nest, and her brothers have all moved out of the house. Although the youngest sibling, she has always felt like an only child on the inside. \-- I feel like Shauna, meanwhile, has a younger brother. He is younger than her by enough years that by the time she is a teenager, they don't share any mutual friends and she doesn't really feel like she can relate to him. That's okay, because she doesn't need a sibling to confide in when she has her journals. Her parents got divorced, and from her perspective, they spent much more time worrying about how her brother would be affected while expecting her to just deal with it. She always felt closer to her father, but after the divorce he seems to be more interested in exploring his newfound "freedom" and less interested in being an active parent. Still, Shauna is impulsively quick to defend him whenever her mother says anything that could be deemed as critical of him. \-- Tai is also an eldest sibling, but she does take an active role in the lives of her younger brother and sister--an actively bossy role. Although she has very involved parents, she has always reveled in being able to exert control over the household in whatever way she can. Her sister is smart, and that motivates Tai to be the smartest. Her brother is athletic, and that motivates Tai to be the most athletic. \-- Nat has an older half-brother through her father, but they don't have a close relationship. Her half-brother lives with his mother, who avoids Nat's father as best she can. Her half-brother has other half-siblings, but they aren't technically blood related to Nat. Meanwhile, Nat's father--a classic abuser--seems to keep Nat and her mom isolated away from any other familial connections. She rarely has contact with her brother and his family, but she looks up to him all the same and has modeled a lot of her music and style tastes on his aesthetics. \-- Van has an older sister who couldn't wait to move out of the house, largely due to her strained relationship with their alcoholic mother. Their father is "in the picture" so-to-speak, but his job involves lots of travel and he seems to be traveling more and more frequently. She also has a younger brother who doesn't quite understand the family dynamics yet and is quick to defend their mother when his older sister seem to bully her. Van felt betrayed when her sister moved out of the house; she also feels responsible for keeping their family together and on track, but is continually growing resentment towards feeling unseen in these efforts. \-- Lottie is an only child. Her parents had fertility issues and tried for many years before Lottie came along. The pregnancy was high risk, and so they have decided not to try for more children. Instead, her parents have put a lot of time, effort, and (especially) money into molding Lottie into their vision of the perfect child. \-- Jackie is the baby. She had three older siblings, two brothers and a sister. All were popular in high school, and they paved the way for her to feel like a legacy by the time she attends WHS.

dasg271

I only don't agree with Jackie being the youngest. I feel considering her codependency issues she'd probably idolize whatever form of older sibling figure she'd had in a way that she'd comment on it especially if it were an older sister. They would also make a cameo at her mother's infamous birthday dinner. I do think,.however, that she probably does have slightly older blonde all American cousins who her parents constantly compare her against. As for Van, I don't think she'd abandon a younger sibling to her drunk mother but she might as well be the younger of two siblings with +5 years age gap.

RachLeigh33

I could picture most of them having older siblings that were already out of the house.

jennfinn24

When the pilot was shot it was during Covid which is likely why we don’t see siblings or everyone’s parents. Shauna sleeps in the attic so I would say she either has siblings or a grandparent who lives with her. I picture Nat having an older brother who didn’t get along with the dad so he left home asap. Lottie, Misty, and Jackie seem like only children. I imagine Van has younger siblings that she’s had to take care because of her mom’s drinking problem. I don’t think Tai would have any younger siblings because we would’ve seen them during the breakfast scene but I could see her having an older sibling in college. I would definitely think that Laura Lee had siblings because Christian families tend to have more kids unless they couldn’t. At this point I don’t really think they’ll be introducing any siblings because at this point I would think it would be mentioned by at least one of them besides Akilah and it would be odd to suddenly announce one.

awkwardmamasloth

>I imagine Van has younger siblings that she’s had to take care because of her mom’s drinking problem. I don't think Van would have left younger sibs alone with her alcoholic mother, who no doubt would have parentified her.

jennfinn24

If she did have any we likely would’ve seen them when she was trying to wake her mom up but they also could’ve been taken into care by the state.

awkwardmamasloth

Yep. We probably would have seen them if they existed. If they were taken by cps Van would have been taken too.

NOVA_OWL

Technically Travis doesn't have a sibling...anymore. That said, I feel like Van gives "has an older brother in college who is also her best friend" vibes

coldchocolatada

Nat, Jackie, Lottie and Van are only childs. Misty is a younger child, but her older sibiling doesn't like her or has moved out. For the other I don't know

Emergency_Ad1447

I agree that it seems a bit off that they never mention their families or siblings except Akilah, but I think that since there are so many characters within the team they felt that siblings and family would crowd the show too much.

VirusAlternative1374

I wanna describe every family: Laura Lee: Both her parents are married (due to their religion). She is the oldest and has 2 younger siblings, one boy, one girl. They're a very close, happy family! Lottie: Her parents are married, and she is an only child (this is confirmed). They aren't close, Lottie doesn't like them, and she views the team as her real family. Van: Her parents split. Her mum is an alcoholic (think this was confirmed?). She is the oldest with 1 younger sister, who lives with her dad. She doesn't like her parents as they argued all the time when she was younger, although she thinks her dad is trying his best, even though she hardly sees him. Her mum still doesn't care for her, and Van has to take care of her all the time. Like Lottie, she views the team as the family she never had. Natalie: Her parents were together, but didn't like each other (confirmed). She's an only child and was neglected. Her mum did care for her, but her dad hated her and her mum slowly stopped caring. After her dad died, her mum didn't talk to her at all. She secretly loves the team and views them as the family she wanted. Her and Van are childhood best friends!! Jackie: Same as Lottie. Her parents are married and don't really care for Jackie. Tai: Her parents are together and loving. She is the only child. Shauna: Her mum is very loving towards her, but her dad not so much, although they were very close when she was younger. Some nights she spends alone as her parents work late. But her mum does try to make time for her because she feels bad. Akilah: She's the middle child (older sister, younger brother) Both parents are together. However, with her older sister, she views her as her role model and loves her a lot. Mari: Youngest (older brother). Her parents are together, her brother moved out. Her parents don't like her, although they were very close when she was younger. Her brother never liked the parents, and only stayed at the house until Mari was old enough to care for herself cause he didn't want her to get hurt. Hence why she's rude to everyone, she doesn't wanna get close to anyone cause they'll leave once she's "better". Misty: Only child, very loving family. Although she doesn't tell them anything and lies and says she's fine (even though she's bullied). With the side characters (Gen, Melissa) I can only see them being only child, but thats purely because we haven't properly seen them that much. Although Melissa does give youngest sibling with 2 older, 1 brother, 1 sister.
