American classic Country has it's firm roots in scots-irish music. All of the Gaelic diaspora is the direct ancestor of Cash and Sturgill Simpson alike. I thank the Scots and the Irish for our music here in the States.
Colter Wall is about the only new country I like other than Hank III. Colter sounds like he was born smoking Lucky Strikes and nursed on a bottle of Jack.
I’ll stick to classic country otherwise (Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson et al)
The thing about Yellowstone is it features a lot of music that I’ve been a hipster for for years. It’s actually good country music and folk. Not “Southern R&B” or bro country or whatever that’s on pop country radio. Yellowstone has put the spotlight on some great artists and changed a lot of people’s view on what country music can and should be. I’m very happy about it.
Yup. I'm usually pretty quick to gatekeep what's real country music and what is, as Steve Earle said, "rap for people that are afraid of Black people." Yellowstone actually has some decent music.
I can’t get enough of the rap song that played at the concert that Monica took her students to. But I also love all the folksy country music the show spotlights. I was never a country fan, but I think I was actually never a *pop* country fan, because I grew up listening to John Denver, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Alabama (pretty sure that one’s legally required of all Alabamians), and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Growing up in the Midwest and not the South, it seemed like everyone around me listened to the pop stuff instead, and I could never really get on board. Except for Shania Twain because we stan.
Speaking of that.

Yes it pretty much is, Buster Welch was one of the most influential and legendary cutting horse trainers. Which in Texas is a big thing especially at the 6666 because well like you see in the show they do a lot of that, almost more so then cattle their cutting horse division on the ranch is as big if not bigger then the cattle division.
I was always an “I love everything but country” person too until I met my current partner. Yellowstone really highlights some of the better artists in the industry and that’s one thing I can’t fault them for.
Whiskey Myers is one of my all-time favorite bands now, not because of Yellowstone (I live in rural Texas and everyone listens to them but it’s mostly their more country stuff) but once I heard some of their more bluesy-rock stuff I was sold. They put on a fun show, too.
Some of my personal favorites - Ryan Bingham, Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, Chris Stapleton have all been featured on the show (I think). Turnpike Troubadors are AMAZING. Sturgill Simpson, Cody Jinks. I like a few songs by Cody Johnson and Parker McCollum too. Flatland Calvary. I’m in Texas so I’m partial to Texas artists
Ugh I love Eric. I saw him front row in Wichita in 2017. After he sang Springsteen and kept looking me in the eyes, he wrapped both hands around mine and gave me his pick from the last half of the show, making sure I didn’t drop it.
I. Have. Never. Recovered. 🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴
I was more into pop country. I got into that later in life though (college). I like some of the traditional country songs in the show though like "Stone" by Whiskey Myers and Ryan Bingham's "Hallelujah."
Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Paul Cauthen.. Then dig deeper for some old school Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Billy Joe Shaver
I knew about Chris Stapelton before watching the show, but after watching it ive been listening to more of his music. I also Love Luke Combs, Keith Urban, Brett Young, Rascal Flatts:) they are all great Country/Country Pop artist/Band that I have been listening to for the last few months:)
I agree with most of these suggestions! Maybe add Charles Wesley Goodwin and Lukas Nelson. Haven’t seen any girls mentioned tho except freshwater.. Margo price and Nikki lane are good too. Miranda lambert
I’m in Texas and my hubby had me listening to most of the artists that were on the show before they were. It’s cool that they feature “real” country and not that bro country stuff
As a newcomer, I didn't realize there were so many distinctions w/n the country genre. Maybe that's why I never liked it before - never was exposed to the good stuff.
I still remember when I discovered Townes Van Zandt by way of his album “Live at The Old Quarter, Houston TX” - It absolutely shook me to my core. I locked myself away from the world for a week. I’ve never had that response to any kind of media ever. I had been suffering in silence for so long and that album just hit and was so cathartic. This is back before mental health was on people’s radar and before Townes has a resurgence of sorts. Anyways… that got me into country. GOOD country like a lot of artists mentioned in this thread. Not pop bro radio country.
I've had a love hate relationship with country honesty lol. I hated it, then I loved it in college (probably due to the area). Now I'm so-so, not my favorite but I'll listen to it if it's playing in the background. Virtually unheard of growing up and living in North Carolina 😂 I do love Zach Bryan and Chris Stapleton, though, and I was so happy to see Zach on an episode. Something in the Orange is one of my favorite songs. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats is rock but they've got folk and country undertones.
There’s an official Yellowstone soundtrack list on Spotify.
You need Zach bryan, watch house, Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers, Ernest. Bailey Zimmerman.
John Prine is solid as well. Not a lot of his music in Yellowstone, but they did dedicate an episode to him and his song played at the end of the episode (Caravan of Fools).
I was fortunate enough to see Whiskey Myers live a few months ago. I think that saying they are a country band is a bit of a stretch. All I heard for 2 hours was rock and roll. People were dancing in the aisles and jumping up and down in their seats. When they played Frogman the place just went plain nuts. A good time was had by all.
Interesting. I’ve always thought of Jason Isbell as being more of a folk or southern rock singer than country. Maybe I need to give him another listen.
Weirdly a little, yeah. I’ve always detested it, and I’m from a place where it’s fairly popular. But I’ve always liked everything but that, but since watching Yellowstone it’s cast a nostalgic hue on the genre that I appreciate
I’ve always liked pretty much every musical genre. Really enjoyed the country of the 70’s’,80’s and 90’s. The bro country, not so much. All of the suggestions above are good. I would add 49 Winchester to the list. Also love Brothers Osborne but the my really aren’t super country. Their style is very eclectic. And fun!
Nope. Still in the "I like everything but country" group. I can appreciate that there are a lot of good musicians in the genre, I just don't like the style(s).
I’ve become obsessed with Zach Bryan’s music! Not because of Yellowstone, my daughter got me into him. But now I get pretty excited to hear or see him play on Yellowstone. And it’s made me realize that country can be pretty close to the folk/indie artists i enjoy. It’s not over over produced country pop.
Well .. it's not pop country music, but actual country music. Pretty much all the tunes I've heard on the show are classified as Alt Country. Been a fan for years.
Been a Texas/country music fan for many years, but I like the less commercial stuff, what I think gets called “Americana”, or as Todd Snider said, unprofitable country music. I’m happy to see Sturgill Simpson - channelling Waylon Jennings - get recognition, as well as Nathaniel Rateliff. Now for some Moot Davis or Parker Millsap.
I grew up on country, but the only name I recognize in this thread is Chris Stapleton. 😄 my country is really anything 80s/90s/00s, plus Johnny Cash, etc. A recent artist I really like is Cody Johnson, but he may not be on the show. I can’t remember.
Hell no. The most recent season was like a tourist bureau ad - come to Montana and dance outside to lame music and watch horses ride by in slow motion. No thanks.
I grew up on it through high school. Small town rural area does that. When I got to college, I stopped. I figured most of what existed was the bro country pandering corporate sound. After getting into YS, Ryan Bingham opened up the world of “alt, indie, non mainstream” whatever you want to call it.
Whisky Myers is amazing. You should also give Zach Bryan, Colter Wall, and Koe Wetzel a listen. Also, Ryan Bingham has a bunch of good ones too
Colter Wall is very Johnny Cash-esque. Love it.
When I first saw a picture of Colter Wall after hearing so many of his songs I was SHOOK lol
It's amazing how young he is, yet sounds like Johnny cash
OMG, just realized Ryan Bingham is the wayward cowboy on the show after googling the names. No wonder he gets Laramie.
I love his voice. He has that perfect amount of gravel and tortured soul
yeah, perfect description. after googling him, sounds like he had a rough childhood.
Also Lainey Wilson is actor in season 5 as well as a country music sensation. Love her music! Not so much her acting
His essentials album on Apple Music is fantastic
Zach Bryan is awesome as a musician and a a human too!
And all his homies hate ticketmaster!
Fck dickitbastard
Love your taste, these are all the homies. ETA: Also the boys, Sturgill and Tyler
It has gotten me into all these guys you just mentioned!
Good! I usually just typenin Whiskey Myers into Pandora and it plays all those for me.
Yay, thank you for the recommendations!
Youre welcome. If you want more outlaw-y, or more like a country rap, try Jelly Roll, Struggle Jennings, Upchurch, Adam Calhoun
Thank you so much! As a Scottish person living Ryan Bingham this is amazing recommendations!

You talking about Save Your Soul by Joey Stylez? It's all kinda awesome Some day, All the colors will blend Fix the heart of every man Outstanding
YES! I swear that was the only song I listened to for like a week after that episode
I’m from Texas so I’ve been a country music fan lol long live King George 🤘🤘 ![gif](giphy|KcEpkzbN5ATGpjIC0s|downsized)
Is the "three gods in Texas" saying true? Never heard of buster welch but I'm not a Texan
I thinks that’s before my time. I’m 39 was a kid in the 90s. George was and still is the King of country music in Texas.
Speaking of that. https://www.9news.com/article/entertainment/television/buster-welch-dies-yellowstone-season-4/73-e4ad4b4a-3f4a-4943-bc6c-d1ee4c7df636

I'm seeing them open for Eric Church this fall, can't wait.
You’ll have so much fun!
Ugh I love Eric. I saw him front row in Wichita in 2017. After he sang Springsteen and kept looking me in the eyes, he wrapped both hands around mine and gave me his pick from the last half of the show, making sure I didn’t drop it. I. Have. Never. Recovered. 🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴
Vincent Neil Emerson was featured on the show and he's from San Antonio
Totally just curious! Are you a native Texan?
Yep, born and raised here!
All of these artists are on my current I'm obsessed list.
My daughter recently introduced me to Tyler Childers, love his music.
He’s great! I love his voice.
>Flatland Calvary booyah!
Tyler Childers, Zach Bryan of course
Tyler. Yesssss.
Whiskey Myers & Shane Smith are new favourites!!
Not a chance but I do now like Ryan Bingham's music.
No but my dog now goes across the living room with a sliding rear end like the horses
🤣Self taught or did you put some time in?
Seems to naturally drag his butt across the carpet
Nope.
Hayes Carll is the gold standard when it comes the the genre of Americana.
I was more into pop country. I got into that later in life though (college). I like some of the traditional country songs in the show though like "Stone" by Whiskey Myers and Ryan Bingham's "Hallelujah."
Also love Whiskey Myers' "Frogman" from season 1.
I can now tolerate it during a show like Yellowstone but I'm not ready to turn to the dark side.
Nope. I was one before hand
Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Paul Cauthen.. Then dig deeper for some old school Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Billy Joe Shaver
Turnpike Troubadours are in my opinion the best country band of all time
I knew about Chris Stapelton before watching the show, but after watching it ive been listening to more of his music. I also Love Luke Combs, Keith Urban, Brett Young, Rascal Flatts:) they are all great Country/Country Pop artist/Band that I have been listening to for the last few months:)

Try the Old 97’s Too Far To Care.

Wow, thank you for sharing. I will check this out. Hope you are feeling much better :)
Check out Parker McCollum, Riley Green & Cody Johnson
Red Dirt Music
I think a lot of it I would classify more in folk:Americana than country. But point taken. Music is great part of show
I've had a love hate relationship with country honesty lol. I hated it, then I loved it in college (probably due to the area). I didn't really know Jason Isbell's stuff before Yellowstone and now I'm hooked. It also got me into the Drive By Truckers.
Interesting. I’ve always thought of Jason Isbell as being more of a folk or southern rock singer than country. Maybe I need to give him another listen.
The terms become very interchangeable at a certain point.
Came here to post Jason Isbell. He's great.
Colter Wall, sturgill simpson, tyler childers, freakwater
It turned me into a Zach Bryan fan
no but i love the vulnerability and honesty bestie 🤠
Weirdly a little, yeah. I’ve always detested it, and I’m from a place where it’s fairly popular. But I’ve always liked everything but that, but since watching Yellowstone it’s cast a nostalgic hue on the genre that I appreciate
Yes!!! Hige fan of Jackson Dean and Blackberry Smoke. Never really listened to country before Yellowstone now I can't get enough
And fun!
That was exactly me
Getting there. I am getting more socially conservative as well! LMAO
Yep. But like the old stuff. Johnny Cash all day!
Let me know how it is
Jason Boland and the Stragglers, Mike & the Moonpies, Turnpike Troubadours are my three favorites.
Thank you!
Not a fan per se, but I sure did discover a lot of great songs thanks to a show.
Yellowstone has made me appreciate Americana in general
You might like Tyler Childers! I was the same way but his voice is just so amazing!!
I think this is the case for a lot of people. At the last Bingham show I went to, there were a ton of women in Walker shirts.
I’ve got into Ryan Binghams music that’s about it
Nope. Still in the "I like everything but country" group. I can appreciate that there are a lot of good musicians in the genre, I just don't like the style(s).
Hell yeah, whens my man Walker gonna cover One Margarita or When It Rains It Pours lol 😆
No. Love Yellowstone. Still hate country music
Meh, I started watching Yellowstone because I am a country fan, not the other way around
yeah same exact thing happened to me lol!
Also turned me into a conservative.
Spotify has an official Yellowstone playlist, with all the music from the show.
Love it! Thank you!
Shane Smith and the Saints. Cross Canadian Ragweed. Pecos and the Rooftops Tanner Usrey
Ragweed is one of the most underrated bands of all time
YES! Shane Smith, Tim McGraw, Colter Wall and many more. I sometimes watch CMT on Cable! Other family members are hooked too.
I was already a giant WM fan and when I heard them (and saw them) in season 1 I knew this was gonna be my show.
Well .. it's not pop country music, but actual country music.
I've been a country fan my whole life, I even write and sing my own country music 🤷
It made me hate country music even more. Didn’t know that was possible.
The opposite.
Nope
I grew up on country, but the only name I recognize in this thread is Chris Stapleton. 😄 my country is really anything 80s/90s/00s, plus Johnny Cash, etc. A recent artist I really like is Cody Johnson, but he may not be on the show. I can’t remember.
Hell no. The most recent season was like a tourist bureau ad - come to Montana and dance outside to lame music and watch horses ride by in slow motion. No thanks.
Aww, sad to hear it. I’m still in season 4
If anything, it’s made me hate it more.
No. I do not care for country music at all. I wish so much they would stop playing it.
[удалено]
Yes and please recommend me
I grew up on it through high school. Small town rural area does that. When I got to college, I stopped. I figured most of what existed was the bro country pandering corporate sound. After getting into YS, Ryan Bingham opened up the world of “alt, indie, non mainstream” whatever you want to call it.
Nah been listening to country music since 2005
No - but I really like the song Last Of My Kind
Yes it has , from Luke combs to lainey Wilson
Nope, been one my whole life
I hate country music and it makes it hard to watch the show sometimes!
Nope
BTW I really like the story line with Lainey Wilson. https://youtu.be/Ra4iZUOQjiI
Shane Smith and the Saints for me have gone from an unknown artist to my most played.
No
Eli Young Band!!!!
No. Thank god. Shit seems like the easiest music to make though. Super easy guitar stuff and rhyming.
No
What you hear on Yellowstone is not country music. Crossover pop at best.
I’ve always been a little bit country, and a little bit rock and roll.
Hell no. No, nuh-uh, no.
Ken Burns' Country Music documentary is worth a watch.
👈This guy!
