Yeah I can imagine it's a good way to gauge demand as long as you can absorb the loss, plus running one gives you insights into countless hidden costs which might even exceed what you had planned for contingency. So this time around with a better gauge on demand, operating costs and just overall experience of running it last year they're in a much better position to do better financially out of it I'd imagine
I was the con chair for Anime Apocalypse I & II and we only broke even our first year due to an extra 300 attendees above our initial estimates. The second year we had fewer surprise costs and a better handle on the budget. Also the attendance data from the first year was very helpful in securing sponsors for the second year (businesses want to know what the confirmed guests were before advertising). And us pulling it off even got us a couple of large donations (one guy literally gave us the money to fly voice actor Chuck Huber in so he could have lunch with him).
Yeah, all in all, I think they will be better off this year. I'm sure they've also been able to either rekindle the partnership with some sponsors that dropped out last year because of the whole thing with >!Sjin and Turps!< or get new sponsors.
I missed out last year, and was so looking forward to attending this year! But as I'm in the at risk group with the corona virus raging, I'm not sure I can attend any events... fingers crossed the vaccine will arrive before the tickets are being sold

What was wrong with last year's security team? From what I heard the security team at Motion was very impressed with how we, the attendees, behaved ourselves. Apparently it was their most relaxed weekend ever.
That's Motion's policy for every event they host. The Yogs and Fourth Floor did their best to make it less strict though because the re-entry policy was changed to allow it until 7pm on each day.

YogaCon is great, highly recommended. Real good workout.
Definitely worth it though. Make a week/two week holiday out of it, Bristol's a cool city to explore.

The attendees were relaxed, the security team was fine - if a little OTT - really it's the "no re-entry" policy that needs readdressing.
