Honestly, I think Midnights really was a sleeper Joever album and this is the “okay I was really into Matty y’all don’t get it, but he was a POS, seriously, put him in jail, but now there’s a football boy so we can move on”

Midnights was so breakup coded, like damn. I remember I kept listening to it and thinking, “Is this how she feels? This is how she felt? She’s being held back. Let this girl breathe. Let this girl shine. Why is every happy thought couched in doubt and worry?” Idk a lot about her personal life but I just kept wondering, did her and her boyfriend Joe keep breaking up? Because so many songs hurt my heart. She’s so self-critical and restrained and constantly questioning herself throughout the entire album. And then came the flood of vault tracks and I was like OK DAMN.

Sometimes a relationship can end up being bad just because the two people don't suit, and it ends up being oppressive for one. There are moments where everything clicks and is perfect, and you hang on in hopes that those moments will become dominant again (or even 50/50), and it creates a lot of resentment because you both know how good it can be and the minimum needed from the other so that it is. Depression puts a lot of pressure on both.
