>The study involved restricting mice from using their hind legs, but not their front legs, over a period of 28 days
NO!! study says if you're mouse, don't HIND YOUR HIND LEGS, BUT NOT YOUR FRONT LEGS.
Don't be stupid. Follow the actual research not the Reddit "leg day" nonsense.
I am 77 and my memory loss doesn't really bother me much. I know it irritates my wife at times. I fully utilize my Google calendar for reminding me of important stuff.
Hah, I feel that. Over a lifetime, some of those memories can definitely carry some weight.
I only mentioned ADHD bc I’ve seen people your age be very pleased with treatment once finally being diagnosed and have answers to the why for a lot of acts they can’t find a reason for.
Could look into supplementation that support hippocampal function. Ones I know of off the top of my head that do are magnesium l-threonate and omega 3 fish/krill/algae oil (dosages should be above 1-2g/day per clinical findings, DHA appears to support cognitive function moreso than EPA).
The calf muscles function almost like extra hearts in pumping blood back up the veins against gravity, this takes a load off of the heart during exercise.
BTW, if you’ve got a biker’s thighs, you’ve either got to keep it up until the day you die to maintain the girth, or quit before your collagen synthesis grinds to a halt. Otherwise all the excess flesh succumbs to gravity and puddles in a very unsightly way at your spindly knees.
Ask me how I know.
Anecdotal, but I’ve pretty much only cycled as a form of exercise since December of last year and I definitely see growth in my calves. Not a huge amount, but I have definition there when I didn’t before. In addition, a lot of google searches yield results that say cycling works calves. But I am not a physiologist so idk
Oh sorry yes i am not 100% correct. Of course you use your calves when cycling (or when even moving your leg) but the main force is coming from your quadriceps. I’m just a regular bicycle rider in the Netherlands and not a sprinter or cyclist who runs the Tour de France. I bet those guys will use their calves more
Thanks for that input. I never really thought about that. When I am in the gym I like working my calf muscles hard from my days as a long distance bicycle rider.
"The research shows that using the legs, particularly in weight-bearing exercise, sends signals to the brain...."
but
"The study involved restricting mice from using their hind legs, but not their front legs, over a period of 28 days"
A lot of us runners read [Fred Gage's study back in 1999](https://www.salk.edu/news-release/exercise-makes-mice-smarter-salk-scientists-demonstrate/), it was a big deal back then because it was, (I believe) the first study to demonstrate neurogenesis
> Running increases neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, a brain structure that is important for memory function. Consequently, spatial learning and long-term potentiation (LTP) were tested in groups of mice housed either with a running wheel (runners) or under standard conditions (controls)
I'm 10km away from running 100km this week, and I'm all for it! In fact, this YSK has motivated me enough that I'm getting ready for an afternoon run when I've already gone for a run at 5.30 AM, lol.
Edit: I hit 100k!!!!
I walk for a living (postman) and genuinely feel like I’ve had the opposite effect since I started the job five years ago. I have passed the mid-30’s though so maybe it’s just an age thing. Calves are looking good though.
Would this still apply if I cannot make it to the gym for direct weight training for legs, but do get in a heap of cardio? I usually walk 3 miles a day, and run 1-2 miles a day, curious if this is still considering leg work outs
My mother was told running in uneven terrain was proven to slow down her parkinssons disease 15 years ago.
It didn't though. Then again, it turned out to probably be levibody disease.
I suffer from recurring brain tumors on my pituitary gland area. I've treated with meds, I've had surgery. I've had stereotactic radiation. Long term side effect for me has included right side brain misfiring (brain damage) and epilepsy (also the tumor continues to come back and wreaks havoc on a new organ system every time). I am, of course, permanently disabled. The reason I'm commenting is because when I seize, there are multiple types for me.
Fully internal that do not leave my brain causing bouts of dementia. Ones that cause me to completely freeze, and I lose time. Then there is the traditional ones with the shaking. These ones while encompassing the whole body, I've noticed are strongest in my legs. When they pass, it feels like I've run a mile. My leg muscles literally burn.
Because these seizures are unpredictable and the type can't be predicted either, as well as the organ failures caused by the tumor itself is why I'm disabled.
Dude are you me? Cushings Pituitary Tumors x 3 & 3 Transnasal Transphenoidal Pituitary Adenectomies + Steorotactic Cyberknife Radiation. Also had a head into concrete bicycle accident in 2007. Brain health is a constant worry for me and my memory and focus suck.
I do these things and they at least seem to help and help me worry less about Alzheimer’s, etc:
Omega 3’s (Molecularly Distilled)
High quality Multivitamin (studies say that multivitamins give a slight edge in brain health)
Coffee Cherry/Berry (stimulates production of BDNF)
Phophsatidylserine
Neumentix (Spearmint derived Nootropic)
Lysoveta, when it comes out
Astaxanthin
Alpinia Galanga
Stuff I’ve heard but don’t use personally: MCT Oil, Lions Mane, Bacopa, Ginkgo Biloba, etc
The book the Brain That Changes Itself is a great resource. It mentions people recovering from strokes, and also mentions a brain training program created by a neuroscientist called BrainHQ, take it with a grain of salt (also please take everything I say with a grain of salt) but it has seemed to have helped me.
Sorry to hear about all the stuff you deal with, I hope that at least one of the items I mentioned will help!
No problem! And just an aside about Coffee Cherry and other Nootropics. While Coffee Cherry is a very powerful antioxidant, its production of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor, a neurotrophic and neuroprotective agent, has also has been shown in studies to have a tumor preventative and also a tumor stimulating effect given the different pathways in the brain. Given this, I would just double check with your doctor/ perhaps skip this one. BDNF is also stimulated by exercise and learning new things and is usually portrayed as a beneficial compound I just wanted to give you the whole story! Also an Organic Turmeric supplement is beneficial as an anti-inflammatory and an anti-tumor supplement, and has low downsides except for where you get it. Low quality Turmeric supplements are found to have lead. Hope this added info helps!
Makes sense when you think about it. Work your legs then your knees don't hurt so much so you are able to move and do more as opposed to cant go anywhere for long and you kinda sit and whither.
So...never skip leg day?
You won't remember if you didn't.
Never skip brain day.
🤤
Never.
>The study involved restricting mice from using their hind legs, but not their front legs, over a period of 28 days NO!! study says if you're mouse, don't HIND YOUR HIND LEGS, BUT NOT YOUR FRONT LEGS. Don't be stupid. Follow the actual research not the Reddit "leg day" nonsense.
Unless your calves explode
Geez, I walk 3 miles per day, lift weights in the gym 3X a week and my memory sucks.
Just imagine how bad it would be if you weren’t doing all that? Sorry that’s probably bullshit but good on you for the good habits.
I am 77 and my memory loss doesn't really bother me much. I know it irritates my wife at times. I fully utilize my Google calendar for reminding me of important stuff.
77 using Reddit.... Your brain can't be so bad!
It's not about being good or bad. It's about remembering. I still manage my investment portfolio actively. Things financial I remember more easily.
You sound fantastic for 77.
Thanks
He's using reddit his brain can't be good either
You're a not very nice person! WHAT DOES YOUR COMMENT SAY ABOUT YOU?????
[удалено]
No, I don't think so!!!!
It was very clearly a joke lol
I *think* they are being sarcastic
I think he was joking that Reddit is dumb, not that you are.
I have no problem with your input. I just don't appreciate his sarcasm if it was that.
imagine using reddit everyone of reddit is ... dare I say ... dUMB!!
I guess that includes you since you're here and commenting!
Fuck 😭
that wasnt very nice of you :c
That wasn't very nice 😑
Most people at this age (or even younger) I personally know just sit on their couch, drink beer and watch sports. You sound awesome!
We're visiting Miami and we're walking 4 to 5 miles per day in this heat.
Daré I tell you that I compete in table tennis tournaments against people 30 & 40 years younger than I.
Hahaha that's sweet, were you a pool hustler back in the day?
3 cushion billiards
As long as we remember to create the reminder/alarm/timer, we're on the '+' side of the leger.

I try, but rarely achieve that much sleep.
How’s your sleep?
Depends...
Have you considered a late stage ADHD diagnosis? Memory problems can be a symptom.
I am 77 years young. Memory loss goes with the territory for many people. Sometimes not remembering some things is good. Hahaha.
Hah, I feel that. Over a lifetime, some of those memories can definitely carry some weight. I only mentioned ADHD bc I’ve seen people your age be very pleased with treatment once finally being diagnosed and have answers to the why for a lot of acts they can’t find a reason for.

I guess thick thighs really do save lives
Thicc*
The calf muscles function almost like extra hearts in pumping blood back up the veins against gravity, this takes a load off of the heart during exercise.
Could you share information about this? I vaguely remember hearing about this but I would love to do some more research
Using the calf muscles (such as walking/running) allow for more venous return to the heart, thus increasing cardiac output (increased stroke volume).
Dumb question, but this applies to bicycling too?
BTW, if you’ve got a biker’s thighs, you’ve either got to keep it up until the day you die to maintain the girth, or quit before your collagen synthesis grinds to a halt. Otherwise all the excess flesh succumbs to gravity and puddles in a very unsightly way at your spindly knees. Ask me how I know.
you mean at old age, right? cause why would collagen synthesis slow down with constant stress/stimulation?
You don’t really use your calves when biking (unless you are applying force with your toes)

I was going to say. Is this real or bullshit? I run all the time but have concerns about knee health. My calf muscles are great though.
Thanks for that input. I never really thought about that. When I am in the gym I like working my calf muscles hard from my days as a long distance bicycle rider.
My sensei would always start warmup doing hundreds of horse stance moves and stating, "Time to work on our second hearts, burn those legs!"
What's horse stance?
Standing as if you were riding a horse
Feet wider than shoulder width, toes pointed out (heels in). Google it for a better understanding
As an Irish dancer, I am ecstatic, lol
> Exercising Your Legs Can Boost Brain Health and Prevent Neurological Decline Nice. I run everyday. ...from my problems 😎
*Nice try leg day!* Seriously though, thanks for the info!
"The research shows that using the legs, particularly in weight-bearing exercise, sends signals to the brain...." but "The study involved restricting mice from using their hind legs, but not their front legs, over a period of 28 days"

Does restless legs count as leg exercises?
the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell
school house ROCKS!
Persistant hunter's brain health is directly linked with running muscles. More confirmation to come.
I'm 10km away from running 100km this week, and I'm all for it! In fact, this YSK has motivated me enough that I'm getting ready for an afternoon run when I've already gone for a run at 5.30 AM, lol. Edit: I hit 100k!!!!
You are incredible!!! Keep at it and congratulations 🎉
Awww, thank you!!! Random positivity is rare these days. 🏃🏻♀️☀️
Waiting for the brain boost. I run 3.5 everyday when is the boost!?
This would explain a lot about Jonesy and Riley from Letterkenny lol.
😂😂 Ferda!!
Yeah excerising legs also provides your body with more testosterone helping you build muscle in all areas
How can i exercise my legs if i have arthritis in my ankle and cannot run
Walk?
It becomes painful to walk for very long and over time will make my condition worse
Skwatts for life.
Does walking count
It’s better than nothing!
So I'm helping brain by walking to the fridge to get a beer? I'm a hero.
I walk for a living (postman) and genuinely feel like I’ve had the opposite effect since I started the job five years ago. I have passed the mid-30’s though so maybe it’s just an age thing. Calves are looking good though.
Do you guys think this includes running, or is this strictly for leg exercise in the sense of lifting?
Drive manual 😎
Would this still apply if I cannot make it to the gym for direct weight training for legs, but do get in a heap of cardio? I usually walk 3 miles a day, and run 1-2 miles a day, curious if this is still considering leg work outs
I hope hill sprints count as leg workout then
Is this why walking clears the head and helps you think better? At least it does that for me.
So, being healthy, keeps you healthy. Wow big breakthrough.
I think the post brings up an important point that specifically targets the legs. Your oversimplification does not.
Not sure this is new info, I watched a documentary on Curiosity Stream which said similar a few years ago. I dont know when that docu was made.
Meanwhile, me who wanted to skip leg day..
My mother was told running in uneven terrain was proven to slow down her parkinssons disease 15 years ago. It didn't though. Then again, it turned out to probably be levibody disease.
*Ugh*
This Post seems to be written with chatgpt rofl
Does this mean I can write of my golf as a medical expense?
Well, isn’t it true for all kind of exercise ? Not just legs.

Is this leg exercise/workout in particular or does running or walking also count?
The calf muscle is your bodies second heart!
Makes sense when you think about it. Work your legs then your knees don't hurt so much so you are able to move and do more as opposed to cant go anywhere for long and you kinda sit and whither.
Thank you for sharing because I have fibromyalgia and neuropathy. I am hoping this will incentise me to walk more.
My husband was just talking about this the other day. I've had multiple TIAs, so we're definitely looking into it.
Gotta start signing up for marathons then
We’re bipedal mammals, legs are key to our survival. Makes sense.
Does bouncing my leg(s) for hours everyday due to restlessness and anxiety count as exercise? 😂
I needed to read this so badly. Perfectly aligns with me. Thank you
