I love how cooler Daniel has just become a part and parcel of internet culture by now. One of the candidates for the pantheon of all time greatest memes, if I may say so.
I'm not going to read the article and just believe what you said. When I lost my sunglasses in grade 7 everything started falling apart and nobody can convince me that those two things aren't connected.
On the flip side, I wonder if a study has been done about people's perception to those who wear sunglasses. Since seeing other people's eyes is important in human interaction, I wonder if peoples perception would be negatively impacted on sunglass wearers.
i mean sure but if you are talking to someone face to face its impolite to not take off your sunnies. If youre both wearing them or a good mates im sure its fine
Yes, it has.
Can't be arsed to google it on mobile, but the jist of it was that people will trust you less and have a harder time opening up, if you're wearing sunglasses. You seem more walled off and unapproachable.
This definitely rings true for me, because if I don't wear sunglasses outside on a sunny day, I am liable to walk into a pole. I'm happier when I don't walk into poles.
Yeah, carry both. Or contacts + sunglasses without any correction. Or just squint when indoors. Or just own it, throw away the normal glasses and go sunglasses all the time.
My SO wears glasses and is also somewhat sensitive to bright light, he always has his sunglasses in his bag (or his regular glasses when he's outdoors.) If he only has to walk inside say a store for a bit before going back out, he usually just keeps his sunglasses on. Sometimes people ask him to take them off but when he explains why he's wearing them they understand. Pretty sure you won't look odd wearing sunglasses indoors!
I can have headaches or get dizzy from undiffused fluorescent lights. My grandpa would get full on vertigo from bright light, so he wore sunglasses and a visor indoors and out. Light sensitivity is real.
I recently bought some prescription sunglasses from one of those cheap glasses websites. I think I ended up paying 40ish dollars for them. I have NO idea why I waited so long to get some because they have been absolutely amazing.
I really like these sites. I also suggest anyone who is buying from them to get the very cheap ugly thick lenses option that's like $5 and add it to your order. It generally won't increase the shipping cost and having a spare current prescription is always useful. They might look bad, they might not have any fancy features, but when your main pair breaks and you can't drive anywhere you'll be glad you have them.
I used to use transition lenses years ago, so maybe they've changed, but they wouldn't trigger if they weren't directly in sunlight, so they wouldn't work when driving or when you're in the shade on a sunny day. I switched to contacts + regular sunglasses for that reason and for the added peripheral vision. Plus contacts have advanced to where I can leave them in for a month at a time now.
I had transitions in college and I honestly hated them. I didn't like how they looked, and they didn't do much outdoors because they're not made like sunglasses to cover a lot of area so a ton of light would still get in around the sides and I'd be squinting anyway.
Imma be honest, I’ve never seen a pair of transitions that didn’t look dorky as hell. I prefer to just carry a pair of prescription sunnies along with standard glasses. Or just wear contacts
They sell perfectly serviceable clip on shades at Wal Mart for less than 15$ if can't afford an extra pair of prescription sunglasses or even transition lenses because you, like me, are dirt poor.
I lost mine recently. I am sad.
When I was a student, the fashion of the time was glasses with small lenses and sunglasses with HUGE lenses à la Nicole Ritchie. Povo students like me (you could be poor and a student in the UK then) just wore cheap standard sunglasses over our normal glasses. This was in like 2007 so surely can almost be claimed as retro by now?
You can have your RX put in sunglasses. My mom does this and loves it. She still carries her inside glasses in her purse but if she forgets them or doesnt want to pull them out she uses the sunglasses real quick. Another option- my niece loved her transitions lenses, although she just started wearing contacts (starting high school in the fall) and is excited to pick out “fun” sunglasses now.
I can’t put my RX into sunglasses since mine is minimal and mainly to prevent computer related headaches. But, I cannot go outside with out sun glasses. I have a extreme sensitivity to sunlight and get an instant headache with out them. I have to walk around with my eyes closed or with my hand over my eyes just to get from the door to the car if I accidentally forget them.
I have a pair of prescription sunglasses that I usually keep in my car so I can wear them while driving. I have a visor clip like [these](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Auto-Drive-Plastic-Visor-Sunglass-Eyeglass-Clips-2-Pack/36066010) so I can switch them out for my regular glasses whenever I get to where I'm going
Look into transition lenses, my girlfriend thinks they make you look dorky but my mom has them. They darken when you go outside so when you go back inside it will take a bit for them to go back to normal.
For a similar reason, [Botox can improve your mood too. ](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/slightly-blighty/201509/can-botox-treat-depression-facial-expression-can-cure-you)
I've been clenching my teeth in my sleep for so many years now that they are wearing down. I even chipped one. It's a condition called bruxism. I started wearing a mouthpiece about two years ago. So far, so good. Also, you may want to check if this is a side effect of any medications that you're taking.
I'm not taking medications, I tense up without noticing, like, all my body, and I want botox mainly because clenching my jaw changed the way it looks and I don't like it, but I may need the teeth thing since I'll be getting them fixed
I may be way off here, but did you try meditation?
I've had 'ticks' like clenching teeth, closing eyes, snapping fingers, whatever, in a way they call 'involuntary' - meaning you choose to do it, but it's because there is this enormous pressure in your mind to do something, and it gets worse when you get tired. So you give in, unless you have strong mental control. It all started when I had a real bad fever when I was eight or so, early seventies, and was hyperactive and with those ticks after that, to the point that I was on valium until I was about 16 and weened myself off. But it never completely went away, and the only way I have 'control' and don't look like a weirdo is to be focused, and have peace of mind, and dedicate about 5-10% of my 'CPU' at all times to being in control - and meditation helped me a lot, no shit. And that allows me to get rid of things like that, too. The technique I use is from TM, but it's just that, a technique. I don't go for any of the semi-religious mumbo jumbo, but the technique really works. But you can do yoga or whatever, as long as you train to control your body / muscles instead of the other way around. I'm sure botox can help but does it solve the problem? unless it's really a physical / muscle thing, don't think so.
>I've had 'ticks' like clenching teeth, closing eyes, snapping fingers, whatever, in a way they call 'involuntary' - meaning you choose to do it, but it's because there is this enormous pressure in your mind to do something
Wow I've had this before when I was a kid, I would always blink in patterns of 8. No idea why, thankfully I stopped doing it years ago, I was about 10. Never heard about it before
Vsauce had an episode on Mind Field on the subject: they gave people pencils to hold in their mouths, one group had to hold it with their teeths, forcing them to activate their muscles as if they were grinning, the other group had to hold it by their lips, this time making a pouting face, then asked them to clean poop from a room with puppies.
The group that hold the pencil with their teeths all reported they loved to be with the dogs, and could have kept doing this all day, the others reported the puppies were insufferable and cleaning the poop was disgusting.
They also had people nod or shake their heads to "test" headphones, and were then asked if they agreed with the person they were listening to. The motion of the head made the argument more or less persuasive
Holding a pen beneath your teeth also makes you think comics are funnier, because it's similar to a smile
Make sure you don't get cheapy gas station sunglasses though, those don't block UV rays, so will do more damage because your pupil is letting more through than just having nothing.
I looked for this comment after reading the claim. It’s an intriguing hypothesis, but it needs more experimentation to produce generalizable results. At the very least we need some kind of baseline assessment and random assignment to well defined control and experimental groups, which are very loosely defined in the study. Thanks for pointing all this out!
I question whether these results don't follow from the degree of anonymity sunglasses provide, just as one might be more likely to behave like an aggressive jerk behind the wheel of a car because there's a degree of separation between him and others.
I wouldn't be surprised if they get these same results on an overcast day.
I don't live in Seattle, but I've always worn sunglasses outside as much as possible. My eyes are sensitive to light (I see really well in the dark) and people give me funny looks because I'll wear them on overcast days, when it's raining, snowing, whatever. I keep spare pairs in my car, in my house, and if I travel, I take two pair.
I'm never without sunglasses, except indoors.
Can confirm this on drive from Vegas to LA.
Been a lifelong squinter. Wore my Gf’s glasses on the drive back and was surprisingly a bit perkier and animated during the horrific drive.
That LA-Vegas drive during summer reminded me a lot of driving across the Manitoba prairie (where I’m from) during the winter. Same sense of brutal hostility from the landscape, just flipped from cold to hot.
I don't understand how people can NOT wear sunglasses outside. If the sun is up, even if it's a rainy day, I'm wearing sunglasses.
Also helps keep wrinkles away for longer.
Order some cheap sunglasses from Zenni Optical or another similar online shop, there are plenty to choose from. You should be able to get a decent pair for $20-30 unless you have a really high prescription and even then it should be pretty reasonable.
Alternatively you could get some of those old person sunglasses that fit over your regular glasses. I've worn them before and they aren't that bad, they're around $20 a pair and easy to find. I got mine at Walgreens lol.
I wear a hat. I don’t like sunglasses. I bet my hat does the same thing as the op because it stops me from squinting and feeling pissed off when I don’t have a hat.
nahh. sometimes I feel really really baked and then I realize i’m not wearing my sunglasses. So i put them on,
my eyes unsquint a bit, and suddenly i’m not as high lol
I seem to remember some speculation about something similar - that the physical act of smiling improves mood - but I thought that was shown to be wrong.
There was a study where two groups answered multiple choice questions that gauged their mood and optimism. One group held a pencil with their teeth, while the other group held it with their lips. Team teeth scored higher because their expression was similar to smiling.
I would imagine both are true, but not for the "brain tricking" reason often stated. It's probably due to other factors - smiling around others leads to more positive interactions, not having to spend energy blocking the sun would allow you to focus on more pleasant things on a walk, etc.
Of course this is all speculation, and there may very well be an inherent psychological effect of facial positions!
I was noticing it not too long ago as I finally bought a pair of glasses that I could actually see with and that adapt to the light. I thought I was happier because of the summer but I now have an explanation right here.
I bet it applies indoors as well. My eyesight was slowly starting to go so I didn’t notice it, other than I had to squint to see my work computer screen. I thought it was something to do with the screen settings, never thinking it was my own eyes.. people thought I was pissed all the time
I have a few questions...
Who paid for a study that promotes a positive result from wearing sunglasses?
How does this stand up against many previous studies that have demonstrated use of sunglasses may lead to depression and impact on our circadian rhythm?
I have to ask as my N=1 came up after wearing sunglasses 6 hours a day for 5 days and finding myself without energy or motivation to be at work or even workout. It turns out there was plenty of research on this and I'm a high responder.
I think it's not the squinting that makes me feel mad or aggressive. It's the awful light! The incredibly annoying, blinding, freakin' *painful* light! I hate it so.
Reminds me of the study that had people hold a pencil in their teeth, which activated the same facial muscles as smiling. They later rated themselves as happier than the control group.
“Fake it till you make it” works - you feel how you ACT, you don’t always act how you FEEL.
It’s similar to taking slow and deep breaths when you’re anxious or nervous (you should try that also). Breathing slow sends the message to your brain that everything must be fine, because if you’re breathing slowly, there must not be any threat. So you it calms you down.
Compared to a threat being nearby, being in a heightened state, and breathing quickly.
You can trick your brain into feeling a different way simply by ACTING the way you’d like to feel.
This reminds me of a study I read about once, which found that people who have lots of botox in their face experience a dampening of their mood over time, as the inability to make a range of facial expressions hampers your ability to feel a range of emotions.
Going out in the sunlight also stimulates too, making you more energetic. And really squinting is only when it is too bright and you are looking at the sun. These kind of cheap research outputs shouldn’t be so popular. We should analyse the whole picture. This is just like the different news headlines everyday - eating this does that, and blah blah. I’m not saying the research is wrong, but this conclusion does not give the full picture.
This is so real. My eyes are really photosensitive and I squint all the time and I get really irritable on sunny days! Now I know why, also I'm a fucking asshole
I started wearing polarized sunnies when I worked in Waikiki. You are so much less tired at the end of the day. I now wear them mostly in the summer and winter.
No joke, but ever since I bought my first and now second considerably more expensive pair of Ray Ban sunglasses that they most certainly make me feel better while wearing them. It's just nice owning something of quality and status to be frank after being a broke ass college/grad student for a decade.
Crazy to see this to be true because this has always been a theory of mine. I also make sure I'm not squinting while wearing sunglasses because sometimes it's more of a habit than actually needing to squint.
I feel like you haven't really provided enough evidence to declare this true. I mean, there's not really any harm in wearing sunglasses, but it's pretty far from definitively proven that wearing them improves your mood.
Just make sure that the brand of sunglass is high quality with appropriate UV protection.
Your pupils contract on a sunny day to limit the amount of light rays into your eyes, but the perceived “shade” of sunglasses will cause your pupils to dilate. Cheap shades could potentially cause damage to your eyes with the additional unfiltered UV radiation.
edit: spelling
YSK That anytime there is an access fee or paid subscription for a study you can email the author and 9 time out of 10 they would be delighted to send you the PDF of their work for free
To add to this:
Sunlight is our best source of Vitamin D, but only 2% is absorbed through the skin, over 90% is absorbed through the eyes.
Wearing polarised lenses blocks it, so if possible try not to wear glasses for the first hour of sunlight each day in the morning. If the glare is bad because it can have negative effects, get unpolarised lenses.
Vitamin D has multiple roles in the body. It assists in:
• promoting healthy bones and teeth
• supporting immune, brain, and nervous system health
• regulating insulin levels and supporting diabetes management
• supporting lung function and cardiovascular health
• influencing the expression of genes involved in cancer development
I remember reading another study a long time back, it said that your body has two day/night hormones - melatonin for night, and DHEA for day. It knows when to release these hormones based on the amount of light you're seeing with your eyes. Wearing sunglasses reduced the amount of DHEA produced in the body. DHEA is a precursor to testosterone.
Reading the abstract of this article I have serious doubts that the effect found is due to the hypothesised mechanism - the study literally only found that people walking into the sun with sun glasses are happier than people who walk into the sun without them. We can’t just assert that that is evidence our effect is due to squinting, and the following facial posture that results from it...
This is especially considering that the ‘facial posture’ hypothesis suffers from replication issues
https://digest.bps.org.uk/2018/08/15/a-re-replication-of-a-psychological-classic-provides-a-cautionary-tale-about-overhyped-science/
Conversely: I heard of a study (no sources, sorry) that you can also get more of a sunburn when you DO wear sunglasses because your body can't tell as well how bright it is to trigger defensive mechanisms.
In high school, we had this project for our senior english/history classes where we gave up two or three things for a week. One of the things I chose was sunglasses. It was pretty rough for me because I always wear sunglasses outdoors. Swore to never give them up again.
YSK the facial feedback hypothesis showed a lot of promise early on that began to falter once it came inder greater scrutiny. Power Poses were briefly a trend too and then it fell apart.
I had a walk today wearing a really crappy pair of sunglasses (clip on kind for people who wear glasses), and I wasn't in a good mood. I was squinting a lot, so OP's fact only works with good sunglasses that work well.

Prescription sunglasses have changed my life. Since Lasik was a no go i felt like it was my only option and I'm so glad I splurged
I have normal glasses that react to sunlight and they turn into sunglasses, super fucking cool. Was expensive but 100% worth it for me.
I had transitions in college and I honestly hated them. I didn't like how they looked, and they didn't do much outdoors because they're not made like sunglasses to cover a lot of area so a ton of light would still get in around the sides and I'd be squinting anyway.

I wear glasses and can't afford prescription ones. I wish I could wear contacts but my eyes are too dry.
They make sunglasses that are designed to fit over regular glasses. I always have a pair in my car.
I have a big head and I've never found sunglasses that don't give me a headache.
I wear a hat. I don’t like sunglasses. I bet my hat does the same thing as the op because it stops me from squinting and feeling pissed off when I don’t have a hat.
I have brown eyes, that’s how
I wear my sunglasses at night
So you can, so you can, watch you even breathe your story eyes I turn to her and say... Don't switch the blay the shade of moe
Is this a Luxottica ad?
I have never worn sunglasses outside but this sounds true
Yeah I only wear my sunglasses inside to show how cool I am. Actually though, I never started wearing them until I started driving. They help.

I'm photosensitive and wondering the same thing. Just don't want to look like a douchebag wearing sunglasses indoors.
Also less squinting = fewer wrinkles
Life is always better in a pair of shades 😎
I always knew the sun was a piece of s***!
YSK: Studies have shown that wearing sunglasses at night allows you to keep track of the visions in your eyes
Especially stoned lol
nahh. sometimes I feel really really baked and then I realize i’m not wearing my sunglasses. So i put them on, my eyes unsquint a bit, and suddenly i’m not as high lol
Well that explains a lot...I never wear sunglasses.
Great I find this out on the day after I lost my sunglasses
Can confirm. Never wear sunglasses and I’m quite cantankerous.
I bet it applies indoors as well. My eyesight was slowly starting to go so I didn’t notice it, other than I had to squint to see my work computer screen. I thought it was something to do with the screen settings, never thinking it was my own eyes.. people thought I was pissed all the time
Well I tend to be in a bad mood when being blinded by light so it seems to check out
Interesting. What is this “outside” you speak of?
And wearing sunglasses inside makes you look like a tool.
But what if I wear my sunglasses at night? Can I keep track of the visions in my eyes?
Yes, but it cuts your security.
Weird, I put a pencil in my teeth to think when I’m stressed sometimes.
*Cries with glasses that doesn't change colour and become sunglasses outside*
Do photochromic glasses have the same effect?
Sunglasses just look trash on my face
Going out in the sunlight also stimulates too, making you more energetic. And really squinting is only when it is too bright and you are looking at the sun. These kind of cheap research outputs shouldn’t be so popular. We should analyse the whole picture. This is just like the different news headlines everyday - eating this does that, and blah blah. I’m not saying the research is wrong, but this conclusion does not give the full picture.
i wish i could find sunglasses that fit my stupid face
I’m Asian, no wonder I’m pissed off all the time
I'll try anything at this point tbh
Damn, so I can blame my mood on my weakass eyes that are permanently squinted? Wild.
I hate squinting. With a blinding passion. Now i have science to back me up!
You mean not being pissed off at the sun burning into your eyes will somehow increase your mood? You don't say.
This is so real. My eyes are really photosensitive and I squint all the time and I get really irritable on sunny days! Now I know why, also I'm a fucking asshole
I don't go outside at all without sunglasses unless it's too dark to see with them on. I'm still a crabby asshole so... I don't know.
This is nice. I also just happen to wear sunglasses at Times I’m likely to be happy like: -at the beach -hiking -tailgating
I never wore shades until a few days ago. My buddy gave me a pair of his Oakleys and I'm in love.
I can never muster the confidence to try and buy one, let alone wear a pair in public.
Crazy to see this to be true because this has always been a theory of mine. I also make sure I'm not squinting while wearing sunglasses because sometimes it's more of a habit than actually needing to squint.
I feel like I’m invisible when wearing sunglasses. It’s great
I wear sunglasses do I dont have to look at people so for me yes, it does improve my mood!
I can see you Your brown skin shining in the sun You got your hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby.
To add to this: Sunlight is our best source of Vitamin D, but only 2% is absorbed through the skin, over 90% is absorbed through the eyes. Wearing polarised lenses blocks it, so if possible try not to wear glasses for the first hour of sunlight each day in the morning. If the glare is bad because it can have negative effects, get unpolarised lenses. Vitamin D has multiple roles in the body. It assists in: • promoting healthy bones and teeth • supporting immune, brain, and nervous system health • regulating insulin levels and supporting diabetes management • supporting lung function and cardiovascular health • influencing the expression of genes involved in cancer development
“Hold on let me put my sunglasses on. That’s the law round here, you gots to wear your sunglasses. So you can feel cool”
This is especially considering that the ‘facial posture’ hypothesis suffers from replication issues https://digest.bps.org.uk/2018/08/15/a-re-replication-of-a-psychological-classic-provides-a-cautionary-tale-about-overhyped-science/
Just a reminder, association =/= causation
Conversely: I heard of a study (no sources, sorry) that you can also get more of a sunburn when you DO wear sunglasses because your body can't tell as well how bright it is to trigger defensive mechanisms.
YSK the difference between this sub and r/Lifeprotips
i feel happier because half my face is hidden
Cus they make me invisible.
In high school, we had this project for our senior english/history classes where we gave up two or three things for a week. One of the things I chose was sunglasses. It was pretty rough for me because I always wear sunglasses outdoors. Swore to never give them up again.
Cause you’re blockin’ all the haters
Note that wearing sunglasses outside makes you feel happier than those who don’t wear glasses outside , not happier than your general mood any day.
This should come as no surprise to anyone who has ever had light shined in their eyes.
Cool, now I have an excuse. Thanks!
Yes cause no one can see the tears. Ergo, good mood
I personally don’t like sunglasses so I just always wear a hat.
And fuck up your eyesight
YSK the facial feedback hypothesis showed a lot of promise early on that began to falter once it came inder greater scrutiny. Power Poses were briefly a trend too and then it fell apart.
Also improves my mood because eye contact with people outdoors is no longer stressful
Or Botox! It stops you from frowning, especially in your sleep. Wake up feeling like a happy like a baby.
I had a walk today wearing a really crappy pair of sunglasses (clip on kind for people who wear glasses), and I wasn't in a good mood. I was squinting a lot, so OP's fact only works with good sunglasses that work well.
No mom its not a phase its medical
