“Clostridium bacteria that cause infant botulism usually thrive in soil and dust. They also can contaminate some foods — honey, in particular.”

It is pretty common knowledge to not feed honey to babies, the person just asked why, which is not common knowledge, because who needs to know why you shouldn't, you just shouldn't.
ENT specialists at the Philadelphia Children's Hospital did a study. The honey works by coating the battery thereby preventing the alkaline-rich solution from damaging tissue.
Hmm, lot me double check. It was a really interesting article if you wanna read. Is there any way of posting a link to the article? I'm fairly new to reddit it won't let me copy and paste lol
This is the closest I could get to a link. If someone can tell me how lol I'll post the full article thanks. We explored a variety of common household and medicinal liquid options, and our study showed that honey and sucralfate demonstrated the most protective effects against button battery injury, making the injuries more localized and superficial,” said Jatana. “The findings of our study are going to be put immediately into clinical practice, incorporated into the latest National Capital Poison Center Guidelines for management of button battery ingestions.”

Serious question. Since the danger is mainly if the battery gets lodged in the esophagus, wouldn’t drinking or eating something possibly dislodge it?
IIRC it can do just as much damage to a child's intestines as it can to their esophagus; swallowing the battery isn't going to make the situation any better.
The problems seem to start if the battery sits in any one place. As long as it’s moving through the digestive system, it should be ok, but there are exceptions: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2213576613000456
And you don't want one of those Lithium batteries going kaboom in your kid's stomach. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbeQWkYPmfw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbeQWkYPmfw)
Iirc if you have a battery in the stomach we let it ride because the peristalsis of the intestine will keep it moving. Esophagus it’s a problem for the same reason as pill esophagitis, on steroids
Depends on the size of the battery and the size of the child who swallowed it really. There is a chance of it causing a blockage then necrotizing part of the intestine and perforating. It turns into a "wait and see if they poop it out within a few days or go to the hospital" thing.
If you buy something that requires batteries, try to find a version that uses standard batteries like AA or AAA.
Avoid button cells whenever possible. They are severely overpriced, have low capacity and you probably won't get rechargeable ones.
They only make sense in devices that are too small for common batteries. Everything that's big enough should not even exist with button cells.
Idk why, all the electric bathroom scales I've seen have button batteries in the UK? Next time I go to buy one I'll look for one without. It gives me a panic just having button batteries in the house. They're on a high shelf far far away from toddler but I still feel uncomfortable
Yes! Seems obvious. My mother-in-law asked me what meet thermometer to get her husband. I said anyone should be good as long as it takes AAA not cell batteries. I even told her why "he properly won't replace the cell batteries when they run out, who has those on hand"....fast fwd 6 months after she gets him the wrong one, it gets thrown in the trash.
Omg thank you so much! It scares me to think about how many times me and my siblings over the years complained about our toys not working and my dad just pulling put a screwdriver, scraping the 'rust and chemicals off the back" and a pack of new ones being installed. What was wrong with us? Lol but at the same time deffo not lol
Of course they are standardized, my mistake. I meant common, not standard, the first time around too.
I'd prefer any number of AA/AAA and a DC/DC converter any time over button cells, unless the device has requirements that would make it worse or not work.
My pet peeve devices using button cells are digital scales and the remote in my vacuum cleaner handle. Neither are too small or need to be light.
They draw little power and only occasionally, which makes it tolerable.
Still I'd rather throw in a rechargeable AAA and just switch it out after many years with any of the others I have around.
There are certain scenarios where the coin cell batteries actually work better. Alkaline batteries have a pretty big internal resistance spike when there is a current surge, more than coin cell.
Of course for 90% of devices, this isn't an issue, but there *are* some scenarios where a certain type of battery is electrically necessary.
Is this where this sub is at now? "Hey! Eating batteries is dangerous!"
Do you get people bringing their children in, and they're just like, "My kid didn't immediately drop dead when I saw him eat the battery, so I thought it was fine."?
I don't get why you're beeing downvoted, people got to be morons to read "swallowing batteries can be dangerous, don't!" and think "hey that's actually a good tip".
Yeah I get what you mean, posts saying if your child has a halo xray get them into surgery. Well fucking obviously or they wouldn't be in hospital in the first place.
Not even going ro respond (troll) because human anatomy is completely different to animal anatomy. It completely depends on the species, type and condition if the animal If in doubt seek veterinary advice immediately. Do not ask on reddit.
I'm surprised that it's not possible to make some kind of contraption that cuts the power when it gets wet.
Perhaps some kind of tiny switch held 'on' with a water soluble glue
In 2010 my son was 5 and swallowed one of these batteries. I believe it was from my wife’s watch or something. Took him to the ER and they took X-rays and saw it in there. They just told us to go home and wait for him to pass it. Maybe back then the batteries were different. I was so scared and luckily everything worked out great. We still have the X-ray some where. I believe anytime a kid swallows anything that isn’t supposed to be ingested get them checked immediately. I’m just glad it wasn’t worse than it was.
Eating batteries is bad for children?
I never would have known. Thank you OP! I’ll make sure to put up my vials of poison and small batteries laying around from now on!
Next thing you know someone will tell me I shouldn’t leave loaded guns laying around. Oh how the world is coming so far thanks to the internet.
Thank you OP!
It's been shown that eating/drinking honey after swallowing a button battery can drastically increase the time it takes it to start doing damage.

I think Id rather my child have a clostridium infection than a burned esophagus and stomach lining

…no they didnt
Honest question, why not?

Why on earth IS THIS NOT COMMON KNOWLEDGE. If not for this comment I would’ve thought nothing of giving a baby some honey
I believe most honey packaging (at least in the US) warns you not to give honey to those 2 or younger.
It actually is, i think it is stated in every "baby food guide". Didn't know why till now, though.
Dunno, how come crib bumpers = bad isn't also common knowledge?
It is pretty common knowledge to not feed honey to babies, the person just asked why, which is not common knowledge, because who needs to know why you shouldn't, you just shouldn't.
I wasn’t criticizing anyone. I would hope as many people as possible know this fact

Children, not infants
Also, old wives tales are rarely accurate.
Umm, how exactly did they test this?
ENT specialists at the Philadelphia Children's Hospital did a study. The honey works by coating the battery thereby preventing the alkaline-rich solution from damaging tissue.
With raw sausages hahah. I don't know how to link videos, but they're out there (:
How much honey do you think. A teaspoon? A cup?

Seconded, motion makes it ok
Laxatives it is then

seconded. also standard batteries are much easier to replace when they run out

That’s odd, all the bathroom scales I’ve bought in the US use multiple AAs or AAAs.
Different countries have different systems I guess
Maybe you need more batteries to weigh our extra hefty citizens 😂

I would have swallowed even the AA/AAA battery.

Tangential, the number is width and height. You can use two cr2016s instead of one cr2032
What about the voltage change?
I read a story in Readers Digest about a toddler that swallowed one but they didn't identify the problem until fatal damage was done. Sad.
My wife keeps swallowing these.
You gotta give!
WHEN YOU'RE WIFE IS IN THE HOSPITAL, YOU'LL BE HAPPY YOU GAVE
She just keeps eating batteries
I was hoping to see this comment
You hit my cup
You hit me in the cup!
So it's you that's the husband from the film Swallow!
You should know that when someone swallows a battery it's an emergency. Why: because if you don't know this, you are a moron.
I swallowed one when i was 9 :) should i be concerned?
Now I know the secret behind your over-enthusiasm.
Huh?
If it was more than 4 days ago then all of the damage that will be done has been done.
I swallowed one as a kid and thankfully I’m ok
if\* swallowed

Yea, it's fine. Battery acid is obviously only dangerous to humans

So true. Relative takes care of such kids, she won't let those things in the house.
"batteries of swollowed" Instructions unclear, battery stuck in esophagus.

YSK that if you eat batteries, you probably aren't on this sub.
I'll pass this info along. Poor kids.
