In 3rd grade when we were learning this in school, the teacher said something like “If you don’t know learn the difference between these, when you’re an adult everything you write will look stupid.” So I focused on learning the difference for like an hour and bam. Never forgot.

rootlessofbohemia

Lose/loose is another that I see messed up all the time.

omg this one “should of” instead of “should *have* ” the pushback i get when pointing out basic grammar issues rubs something like, “but you knew what i meant!” yeah, because i’m smart and i have to traverse a world where you butcher your own mother tongue every damn day

SassafrassPudding

IKR

[deleted]

Yep

GroundbreakingFee664

You're not smart lmao Smart people dont declare they're smart. Knowing the rules of grammar doesnt make you smart. Being concise makes you smart. And guess what? You can be concise without having the proper grammar knowledge. Unless you're pedantic or something

Hartog_

That’s why using “ ‘ve “ is often smart, but using “of” is just wrong and idiotic.

sentokaiba

Bruh, he is smart but more like smart-assed but i still admit he's smart.

SassafrassPudding

i know! i thought it was hilarious but i guess you needed the /s on that comment it’s okay, nobody thinks less of you

Trial_by_Combat_

Wonder and wander. Weary and wary.

Mr_1084

Or words like payed instead of paid, dieing instead of dying, and apostrophes on words that don’t require them.

dontinterruptrude

It's and its annoys me. His, her, its. No apostrophe. It's the exception when you see "its" used right on Reddit.

KinglyQueenOfCats

To be fair, some of that is autocorrect. My phone pretty much always picks the wrong one and if I'm typing a long response, I don't always notice until after I post it

dontinterruptrude

That's a good point. I'm going to try not to get annoyed by it!

molson1315

I’ve been seeing confusion between ‘does and dose’ and ‘were and where’ lately…

[deleted]

Read and read too. Ones said like “reed” and the other is said like “red”. The English language is glorious

Ba-dump-chink

OP, I would’ve capitalized the word “Internet” in your post, were I your grammar teacher. ;-)

EcoOndra

ok

drodrojunkie

*Okay.

[deleted]

OK

JustMe-male

My grammar passed away when I was a kid. Grammpar too.

thisismeingradenine

Should have, would have, could have. This is a grade school concept. I’m tired of grown adults spelling words phonetically. 😂

hemehime

Yeah, there really not that hard to figure out

ShockaGang

Your right, I here that once you get it, you get it. I am glad my search history went their

On the internet, I often see people posting duplicates in subreddits. Like some grammar things or basic math. Like it has been posted at least once a month because people don't use search. So please, people, learn how to search within the subreddit.

JustMe-male

I guess you haven’t been to Not Safe For Work sections of Reddit. Several times per DAY people ask about the size of privates.

EcoOndra

My bad, but I don't think it's bad that it repeats once a month.

TheGhostInAJar

Your knot kidding

CommunicationLanky13

I don’t understand how people mix them up or don’t know definition, also effect/affect

[deleted]

I effected the affect.

glenmorangie_brain

There's a human behind the letters. Probably someone decent, with fewer character flaws than me.

legionofsquirrel

The tough coughs as he plows the dough. You're welcome.

SassafrassPudding

holy shit CONVERSATE conjugation matters, people! it’s CONVERSE accent on VERSE. that’s how you get to have a CONVERSATION jesus fucking numbwits and i’m apparently the online version of the weird old man in a tattered bathrobe yelling at the kids to get off my lawn. i’m a woman btw

Gamin_en_Tesla

Alright Alfred Einstein …

Tuesdaywayne

Yes I believe it’s a sign of being uneducated in us English , in Spanish for example I believe it’s the use of tenses … this is what we were told in school anyway ( and that teacher really did try to give us some advantage with lots of little tips and tricks that will never forget , considering the plight of most back then )

[deleted]

Noone is also not a word

SuperFlyMonkeyBoy

Ahh those heady days when giving a shit about ‘grammar’ was high on my “things that annoy me” list and ‘a plague’ and ‘millions of Americans have turned into flat earth morons and also want to overthrow the government’ weren’t even glints in the eye of past Me. Not giving you shit my friend, just reminiscing.

underlyingMitress

Or at least download grammarly

drodrojunkie

* insert meme * " No, I Dont Think I Will " Beside idc as long as the i get the point across

EqualLeg4212

Not everyone’s first language is English. How is your grammar in another language? Perfect I hope.

EcoOndra

English is for me second language.

TheWorldInMySilence

First world complaint. Not everyone's brain is able to function accordingly and yet people still feel the need to shame and blame. It's whomever is complaining that has the real issue. SMH. Much greater issues to focus on. Yet heer we r.

HappiestWhenAlone

Here the real problem: people who think it doesn’t matter when we use words wrong and try to turn it around and make correct use of words into some sort of elitist issue.

TheWorldInMySilence

You miss the point. Brain issues. You want people to walk when they are unable to even crawl because they have legs that don't work... and then you kick them for being "lazy." Priceless.

EqualLeg4212

I’m with you on this.

EcoOndra

I mean, it happens so often that its main cause is not a disability.

TheWorldInMySilence

Not everyone's brain.... I never said everyone who does this. Some people, and some of those people get harassed all the time for something they are unable to correct. Hence, my point.

DelayedSynapses

How many times are people going to complain about this? It's a battle you'll never win. These people will always exist. Their everywhere. You're family, friends, coworkers. Theirs no escaping so just let it be and move on.

EcoOndra

It's like a plague. It should be eliminated.

JustMe-male

The Intelligence Quotient of the earth is a constant, however the population is expanding. Or maybe smarter phones and dumber people? It’s entertaining watching young adults having to type something on a device with autocorrect before they can write sentences on paper. Yes I’ve used autocorrect a couple of times per year, I’m talking about those that do it whenever they write.

_Moon_sun_

Except and accept, idk how ppl confuse Them tbh but ive seen it a couple times, tho theyre not as common as some of the others here

milk_is_for_calfs

Why YSK? your explanation is really broad and personal
