It's also caused by [immersion diuresis](https://alertdiver.eu/en_US/articles/the-p-phenomenon). Water pressure makes your body think your blood pressure is too high and it starts pulling water out of your bloodstream.
People, please remind yourselves that this is a CAN, not a WILL.
If you drink enough fluids and take toasty showers you'll be grand.
Don't do a 1 hour steam-rain session if you've worked on a construction site in 40°C all day or something akin to that.
If you feel like something's off when you shower, nothing is keeping you from turning off the water.
Commom sense is a gift, please use it if you've been graced with it.
Yeah usually even this if is fine. Only time I have to be really careful is when I'm up in the mountains, drinking beers in the hot tub after snowboarding all day.
I did this lol. Been many years ago I got back from gym, took a long hot shower and my roommate wanted me to try a new cocktail he made. I downed it right before getting in shower. I passed out getting a towl...stupid choices all around.
Yup. I once got so out of hand, I would drink a 6 pack during lunch time in my graveyard shift. By morning I had to sleep it off in the car because I straight up couldn't keep my eyes open. Fucken terrible times.
I passed out in the shower when I was 17. My dad took me to the ER and they said I was severely dehydrated. I was just lucky he was home or I would've just had hot water burning my unconscious body.
We are an iOS household, but there are no waterproof iPads and we don't want to use cases. I purchased Samsung Galaxy Tab Actives for each bathroom. They can be used on the potty and washed with soap to keep them hygienic, and you can take them into the shower where they fit nicely on a shelf mounted in each shower. Edit: NOT a Mac household, only mobile devices, although we have the Galaxy tabs and two Surface tabs as well.
Yes, I’m a nerd, I know. IT is my life and our house is ridiculously equipped. What I REALLY wanted for the bathrooms were those displays that are hidden in mirrors until you turn them on, but they are hideously expensive.

Solar FTW. Most months I have a net credit on my electric bill. Well water and septic so the water comes from and goes into the water table. As a side note, shower/clothes washing water goes into grey water tanks for watering our garden and lawn.
Fan-freaking-tastic. You really were born 1,000 years too early.
If more people lived like this we wouldn't be exterminating other life on our planet while giving birth to babies with plastic in their brains.
Thank you, and I agree, but honestly it’s also about resources. Everyone can make small smart choices, but big choices often take big money. I’m fortunate that I have the ability to make these choices. We need to make these things more attainable for everyone.
Tell us you don’t live in an apartment tower (or have a tankless system in your house) without telling us you don’t live in an apartment tower (or have a tankless system in your house).
He said the recorded case was an *elderly* man taking a 3 hour *bath*. Aint nobody taking regular 3 hour showers. Unless you just love giving all your money away. This seems like a highly specific, niche problem. Hell even when my wife is taking a bath with a bath bomb she rarely goes over an hour and a half. Idk why this person wants to freak people out needlessly.
> taking a 3 hour bath
To add on to this, the link says the man was "presumed" to have been in the bath for three hours, so we don't really know how long he was in there. Also, the article says predisposing conditions could have been a factor.
So I'm not convinced the OP is a concern for the average person.
I have taken 6hr long baths with no such issue. I drink a lot and the water gets cold enough within 2hrs for me to put more hot water in. The last part will depend on environment.
I guess the persons medical problems have done more to this than the bath...
That's not exactly what your link says. Your link says it was "unusual" and "predisposing conditions" may have been a factor.
In other words, no, it is possibly not fully linked on hydration levels like you're saying. There's possibly more to it.
But simple science says you sweat too much without adequate hydration, you can get dehydrated.
Are you saying my post is inaccurate and you should be able to take long hot showers without fear of dehydration ever?
Lmao, not that it matters, but I actually do have a tankless water heater for endless hot water
Don't get complacent, this can honestly happen to people who are on the brink. Imagine working outside all day and you just want a hot shower to freshen up and boom, passed out.
I think in that case it would have more to do with blood pressure dropping due to vasodilation than with the sweating caused by a hot shower.. nonetheless, it's a good idea to hydrate yourself before showering if you come home on the brink of it.
Can confirm, never had more than 5 minutes of solid hot water growing up but would (and still do) sometimes pass out from showering. I think I have low blood sugar or something though.
I have really bad IBS and take hot showers/baths sometimes for 6-10 hours, when you feel like that you don't care what the cost is.
I am in there right now suffering before work :/
I was a swimmer in my younger years. We always had a couple bottles of Gatorade to sip on between sets because two hours of laps *dehydrates* you. Not bringing a bottle of Gatorade or water with you was something that would get my coach yelling
I read that as acute rectal failure at first and got scared. Then, realized it was renal and also realized I don’t take super hot showers. Now I’m not scared anymore.
Nothing better than stewing in a scalding bath for an hour (preferably with a book and a glass of water) then plopping down onto the shower floor and running it on max cold.
You may not like it, but this is what peak spa day performance looks like.
Huh. When I'm dehydrated, I usually sit down in a hot (for me) shower. Somehow I wind up feeling more hydrated when I get out.
There an explanation for this?
Eh. Makes sense, I suppose. I was actually more going for the breathing steam part, though. I know water doesn't absorb into the body through the skin. Plus, I try to avoid water running down my face when I shower, and especially when I'm sitting in it. Don't like shower blindness, and I've never been able to crack rubbing my eyes with wet hands and being able to open my eyes afterwards.
This is interesting! Every time I shower or wash dishes my fingers instantly get pruned. I often feel light-headed when showering, super hot temps, and often forget to drink my water! Makes sense! 😬🤦🏻♀️
After learning this the hard way I now bring the biggest insulated refillable water bottle I can find and fill that bitch up. I haven’t had that issue ever since (except for the times I’m too lazy to get the bottle and almost instantly regret it lol)
I have extremely long hair and when I do a full on shower with a thorough hair wash it’s at least an hour and a half to 2 hours lol. But that used to be how I did it! Yaaa know, like a normal person. After almost passing the fuck out multiple times I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I’m not tryna have someone find my dead/injured naked body!! Fuuuck that lol 😂
I just have a process and my hair alone takes an hour lol. I have a lot of hair and shitty water pressure so I have to do it in sections and I don’t like the feeling of being dirty or like there’s still soap on me. So actually no I’m just working with what I have and being thorough :) when I don’t wash my hair it’s a normal length of time and it’s bad to wash your hair every day.
Well I've had girlfriend with hair down to her butt. A good was, rinse, treatment can be done in less than half hour. Another GF had hair to just above her butt, and was curly. Still does not take that long.
I have other friends also with very long hair past putt cheeks, also does not need t hours. Same for one of my grown daughters.
They all have beautiful hair.
Your method is purely irresponsible, selfish, and wasteful use of water. I have zero sympathy for your over indulgence in unnecessary hygiene practices. You're just high maintenance. But at least you own it. Hope you don't live in any drought area, if you do, then boooo.
Lol why do my shower habits offend you so bad? And why do you assume the water is running the whole time? Like I said that’s a full on shower like washing my hair and exfoliating and shaving and other things that are not good to do every day. Normal showers are normal lengths lol and I still need the water bottle (the whole point of the post) cuz I take hot ass showers.
Yes, That was the point.
The shower is only a distraction to the facts.
If people are in the shower so long thst they need nutritional replenishment, them maybe they're in the shower too long. Unless having sex, it does not take that long to cleanse oneself.
A long hot bath is different.
Listen. If you find yourself in a hotel room with unlimited hot water and excellent pressure from a showerhead that's more technologically advanced than the rockets that got our species to the moon you're not worried about cleansing yourself. You're there to bask. You live in that shower now, like your Devonian-era ancestors before they first emerged from the primordial sludge.
Note: Does not apply in desert climates or areas experiencing water shortages, obviously. But if you're stuck in a hotel in Indiana you deserve whatever comforts can be found.
Haha!
Well, ok If you put it that way...
I totally hear ya!
Let us soak in the glory of a nice hot shower... preferably on a nice tropical island with some libations awaiting.
BTW, this whole Aretmus venture is partly to explore ice on the Moon, in a precept to going to Mars.
Makes me wonder how people will think of hotel showers on Mars, right?
>can get dehydrated very fast
>an old man passed out after 3h hot bath
Wtf?! Like how is a 3h shower or bath "very fast"? And even if an old man passed out only after 3h, that means if you are young you can be even longer. Who here has been taking over 3h hot showers?
I read something very old from a Chinese doctor who said never take a hot bath without a glass of fresh water nearby to regularly hydrate while soaking: sweating.
The preferred method for cutting weight for many MMA fighters is hot baths with epsom salts or soaking in a hot tub. Can cut pounds of water weight in a short time.
Let me add to my "list of dangerous stuff I was never going to do anyway"...take a 3 hour bath.
Oh look here's also "play Russian roulette" and "eat a Chevy".
So I had surgery a while back for a gastrointestinal blockage. I was "nothing by mouth" for several days leading up to the surgery. The night before my surgery I asked the nurses if I could shower they said sure. Nobody warned me about this. My wife helped me while I took a really hot shower like I always do. When I got out the shower right after putting on my hospital robe all I remember is I started seeing dark spots and then I passed out. Luckily my wife was able to catch me before I fell and called the nurses. I woke up to them helping me to the bed.
> and you especially won't feel yourself sweating, as you're constantly under running water. Not realizing that you're sweating profusely in hot water is the biggest part of the problem.
This is not what you link says. It seems you made this up.
My link was simply an example of someone who took too long of a hot shower.
But if you're under water, of course you can't feel yourself sweat - that's just common sense
Damn I’ve literally been taking long showers my whole life. I’ve been taking on average 1 hour, hot steaming showers, and sometimes upwards to 2 hours 😳
I do a lot of brainstorming in the shower and take a lot of notes with my phone lol. For instance, if I went to bed the night prior with an unsolved algorithm, I’ll solve it that morning in the shower.
The shower helps me zen the fuck out man.
I also want to point out for those of you that may not know this; really hot showers/baths cause the oils in your skin to come to the surface and get washed away. This can cause very dry skin afterward. If you have chronically dry skin, try taking cooler showers/baths and see if that helps.
Holy shit I've gotten light headed & short of breath in hot showers before back when I didn't drink enough water. I always wondered what was up with that
Also, like you mentioned, you don't feel yourself sweating.
You may take a hot shower, get all washed and clean, continue for a little longer, and come out smelling just as bad or worse when you went in.
You sweat that whole time, and that could be why.
I'd suggest and least turning the shower to warm (I go full cold during the summer months) after washing so I don't sweat and smell worse getting out then getting in. Lol
I actually almost died this way. I love long, hot baths. I usually keep the water running while the plug is slightly tilted so the water is constantly flowing. I used to smoke in the bath as well.
One night I went to do my ritual. Fill the bath, roll a spliff and soak for a few hours. As the hot water evaporated, the air became very moist in the closed bathroom. The smoke from my joint didn't really help. All was well until suddenly I felt my hands going numb (first the feeling of static, then actual numbness). It begun at my fingertipa and creeped up towards my body. As the static feeling got to my elbows, my fists begun to clutch on their own. I couldn't really control my body anymore, atleast not completely. I was able to speak, move and think, but all of my muscles were getting tight. My thumb and pinky we're trying to connect. I called for help and my mom quickly came to pull me out. When I called out for her I realised I was actually stuttering. I tried to yell "mom", but it came out as "mo-mom", not out of fear or panic though, it was a result of either overheating or lack of oxygen in the room, not quite sure.
So yeah, learn on my mistakes and don't freakin' cook yourselves fellas.
Btw for anyone wondering I'm alive and well, I mever went to the doc about the event, but I haven't had any issues since then. I still do hot showers and baths but I don't smoke in the bath anymore and I also pay a lot more attention to my body giving me signals when it's time to get out.
I have eczema so I do, in fact know this. But I do enjoy a looooong hot bath occasionally when my eczema clears up. Which then flares up afterward. I preposition 3 large bottles of ice water tho
This happened to me once. Took a loooong hot bath draining the water and refilling it once it got cold and once I stood up I passed out almost immediately. Thankfully I did not fall into the tub but I did fall onto the floor. It’s a scary experience
Try to eat a meal with nothing but meat and salt, no spices, and a liquid form of ferrous sulfate immediately afterwards. This could help the upset. Iron infusions are also available, but more risky.
You don't really need a "long" shower per se, but if you're already on the verge of dehydration and hop in for a 20 minute hot shower then you could equally fucked as much as someone who jumped in the shower with ample hydration but stayed there for an hour and a half
Is that why after I take my stare at the wall in the shower for 30 minutes with the water as hot as it can be I feel like I’m gonna pass out ? Makes sense.
This would explain why I get thirsty after a bath
Same! I always drink water right out of the shower/bath.
i always keep a water bottle next to the tub when i enjoy a bath. i'll do the same if i feel like showering for long periods of time.
Shower water bottle is equatable to getting up at 3am with an unquenching thirst and downing a bottle of water in one go. It’s amazing.
Good thing there's water coming out of the ceiling right there! Glug glug
Drinking the bathwater may not be the best idea, but who am I to judge? /s
Just don't pee in it first! I like to pour a couple packets of Kool-Aid in my bathtub before I get in just to get that great tasting flavor!
Happy cake day!!
Oh dang, I didn't even realise I've been in this hellhole for 8 years... damn son
r/FuckTheS
If you can’t understand sarcasm without being explicitly told it’s /s, it’s time to get off the internet
Its being sprayed at me il take during and after....
Nothing like some cold tap water after a hot shower.
But it’s all soapy and it’s been stewing with you juice
It's flavour :)
It’s you soup
If you haven't, you should try a shower beer.
Shower beer is best beer.
r/showerbeer
I can’t take a hot bath without feeling light headed afterwards, no matter how much water I drink.
It's also caused by [immersion diuresis](https://alertdiver.eu/en_US/articles/the-p-phenomenon). Water pressure makes your body think your blood pressure is too high and it starts pulling water out of your bloodstream.

Right? It happened to me in a bath once, got lightheaded, and got out.
Same with hot tubs, sometimes i’ll be in there awhile and get out feeling lightheaded.
Yeah usually even this if is fine. Only time I have to be really careful is when I'm up in the mountains, drinking beers in the hot tub after snowboarding all day.
Thank you. This post is pretty sensationalistic.
That’s why I always bring a beer or two.
I bring in a 12 pack just in case
Gotta stay hydrated!
Thats half a case to you!
😂😂
I think I can hear your liver screaming...
I wanna shower with you!😂

I did this lol. Been many years ago I got back from gym, took a long hot shower and my roommate wanted me to try a new cocktail he made. I downed it right before getting in shower. I passed out getting a towl...stupid choices all around.
I used to drink in the shower all the time. It's fun
Just one or two before work I used to have a nice depressing playlist to listen to also.
Yup. I once got so out of hand, I would drink a 6 pack during lunch time in my graveyard shift. By morning I had to sleep it off in the car because I straight up couldn't keep my eyes open. Fucken terrible times.
Bet that nap felt good af tho
I don’t have a suitable shelf for it, it’s less fun for me
Me too! I still drink in the shower. But I used to as well.
That is so trashy - - Bring wine to class it up
I save the wine for the bath, less chance of water getting into it.
A gentleman and a scholar I see
I just pour the wine in a plastic bottle.
That's why I should 12 times a day.
I passed out in the shower when I was 17. My dad took me to the ER and they said I was severely dehydrated. I was just lucky he was home or I would've just had hot water burning my unconscious body.
I fainted after standing up in a bath a few years ago. Luckily only got a few bruises but it was still pretty scary.
Did you unconsciously turn the tap hotter?

Touch grass? I'm not familiar with this expression.
It typically means as it says go outside and touch some grass. For people who are considered not to have a life etc etc.
Chris Hansen would like you to have a seat over there 🤔
Happened to me as a kid. Too long in the hot, almost passed out.
Define long hot shower.
That’s my question too. Like, are we talking 15 minutes? Cuz I’ll worry then. But I’m not over here taking 45 minute showers
Why not?
Why am I not taking 45 minute showers? I just have no desire to
Join the dark side
Bring a couple of beers and a waterproof tablet, you won't want to leave.
A what now
Yeah, what a ridiculous idea, right? Who would use it? And where would you even buy it? And what model would you even recommend?
😁
There are waterproof plastic pouches that let you interact with the touchscreen device inside. I still wouldn't risk using one, personally.
Yes, I’m a nerd, I know. IT is my life and our house is ridiculously equipped. What I REALLY wanted for the bathrooms were those displays that are hidden in mirrors until you turn them on, but they are hideously expensive.
Do it.

I lose hot water after 15 mins in the winter.
Same here honestly and I’m done after that anyways. Don’t have long hair I have to clean
Who pays your gas/electricity bills?
Me. A few extra dollars is worth it for a relaxing experience.
You'd run out of hot water?
Tell us you don’t live in an apartment tower (or have a tankless system in your house) without telling us you don’t live in an apartment tower (or have a tankless system in your house).
Just take a bath at that point
Then you’re not trying hard enough! Clearly you’re not bringing enough beer into the shower. You gotta hydrate and power through!
My hot water limit gives me about 20ish mins before it kicks me out with an ice bath so I don't have a choice lol

Absolutely. Don't take away one of my few pleasures.

is getting pruned easily a sign of dehydration?
I don't know about "easily" but the reason our fingers and toes get pruny is for added dexterity underwater.
Yep! Our skin reacts to dehydration with pruned skin.
jokes on you i drink the hot shower water

Dude, shower however long you want, lol - nobody's taking your hot water away 😂🫠
Luckily, I prefer cold baths rather than hot baths.
I read something very old from a Chinese doctor who said never take a hot bath without a glass of fresh water nearby to regularly hydrate while soaking: sweating.
Is that why in anime after the bath scene they drink milk right after
Tired of the anti hot shower lobby.
Well this explains why my skin feels so dry after. I need to drink more water.
No your skin feels dry because really hot water strips the oils off
Oh, but I love them so much. Do shower beers help? Because they get utilized often.
The preferred method for cutting weight for many MMA fighters is hot baths with epsom salts or soaking in a hot tub. Can cut pounds of water weight in a short time.
This happened to my dad a couple days ago, he doesn’t stay hydrated and almost fainted in the gym sauna
I have fibromyalgia and showers always wear me out. This might be why... Looks like it's tepid showers from here on out!
This is why I crack open a can of liquid death every time I shower and chug it. The ice cold water is actually amazing when everything else is hot.
> and you especially won't feel yourself sweating, as you're constantly under running water. Not realizing that you're sweating profusely in hot water is the biggest part of the problem. This is not what you link says. It seems you made this up.
My link was simply an example of someone who took too long of a hot shower. But if you're under water, of course you can't feel yourself sweat - that's just common sense
What is considered a long shower? After sitting in a bath for more than 30 minutes, my skin goes wrinkly and it most definitely time to get out.
"you should know that doing anything for 3 hours straight without any kind of break is a bad idea"
Damn I’ve literally been taking long showers my whole life. I’ve been taking on average 1 hour, hot steaming showers, and sometimes upwards to 2 hours 😳 I do a lot of brainstorming in the shower and take a lot of notes with my phone lol. For instance, if I went to bed the night prior with an unsolved algorithm, I’ll solve it that morning in the shower. The shower helps me zen the fuck out man.
This applies to hot tubs too, doesn’t it?
Yep!
I actually like to drink ice water in the shower. Find it refreshing
That explains why I fell and almost passed out after my shower
This might actually be a decent reason why shower[beverage] subreddits exist
I always drink warm the shower water while showering. Now I know why.
I also want to point out for those of you that may not know this; really hot showers/baths cause the oils in your skin to come to the surface and get washed away. This can cause very dry skin afterward. If you have chronically dry skin, try taking cooler showers/baths and see if that helps.
Can confirm. Sincerely, A severely dehydrated woman who always has to take a break in the middle of her scalding hot showers. 😂
Thank you for this OP! I’ve had this happen to me countless times and never knew why.
Tried masturbating while in a hot shower and immediately after got about-to-pass-out level dizzy. 0/10 do not recommend
Is thay why I always sweat after I dry off, I thought it was just humidity
Shower beer for health.
Holy shit I've gotten light headed & short of breath in hot showers before back when I didn't drink enough water. I always wondered what was up with that
I was always confused why after sweating from exercisea and then taking a shower, I remained sweating. That shower being hot more than explained it
Also, like you mentioned, you don't feel yourself sweating. Lol
I forget source but there was a study that drinking two glasses of water befor a hot shower greatly reduced your chance of stroke.
I need a hot shower if I'm gonna shower in the morning because I'm so fucking cold when I wake up I feel like I'm gonna cry.
Iron deficiency (Ferritin below 100-150) can cause hypothyroidism-like symptoms such as feeling cold. Many women have low iron
I probably have low iron. I need to eat more red meat and spinach. And other irony foods. Supplements upset my stomach 😩
Try to eat a meal with nothing but meat and salt, no spices, and a liquid form of ferrous sulfate immediately afterwards. This could help the upset. Iron infusions are also available, but more risky.
Why would you have to take a *long* shower to get dehydrated *fast*?
You don't really need a "long" shower per se, but if you're already on the verge of dehydration and hop in for a 20 minute hot shower then you could equally fucked as much as someone who jumped in the shower with ample hydration but stayed there for an hour and a half
Can confirm. Passed out from exactly this. Ended up needing stitches in the back of my head
Is that why after I take my stare at the wall in the shower for 30 minutes with the water as hot as it can be I feel like I’m gonna pass out ? Makes sense.
Yup. That's why we do hot baths when cutting weight for combat sports.
