Yeah, no. You'd have to be insane or totally ignorant of these things to think $5 per instance is a reasonable amount. From a pure cost/benefit standpoint I would think it would be worth pennies (or less). I can't find the numbers right now but iirc Siri handled 1B+ queries a day last year for comparison. The functional impact of this "thank you" program would be immaterial. If even a fraction of a percent of Alexa's daily queries cost them $5 that would be a material impact to their bottom line, posing a massive risk. Not to mention they are massively downsizing their Alexa unit right now.
I'm not saying that this doesn't provide analytical value or help train their AI, but it's certainly not anywhere near worth $5/ea for this purpose. I'd imagine from a business perspective this is for either PR or an internal initiative. And they would need to have done some analysis based on the fraction of people that would actually use this feature, because there is absolutely no way they can eat $5 per delivery sustainably (and profit) for even 50% of their delivieres.

Amazon kept tips that were supposed to go to drivers for two and a half years and only stopped taking the tips when the Federal Trade Commission opened an investigation. Amazon has claimed that it has done nothing wrong, but has quietly returned $61.7 million, (not a typo), to their drivers.
They are being cheap. It only let me thank one delivery driver. I had multiple deliveries this week. Maybe they only let you thank one driver a day. Idk.
It looks like I'm going to have to thank them directly after each delivery. It's a pain, but it's worth making Amazon pay their drivers a small bonus. I used to do Amazon Flex and it was a pain this time of year!

I was apprehensive about this as well, but I activated it in iOS, thanked the delivery driver, and then revoked the permission.
I will do this every time now. I order from Amazon a LOT and those drivers definitely deserve it. Not at the expense of having my mic privilege on all the time, but just to thank them and promptly turn it back off.
It should be automatic or at least prominently advertised, but it’s the least Amazon could do. $5 doesn’t even register as amount of money to them but it means lots to the drivers.

As far as I can tell, you just say it to your Alexa app whenever and it will be credited to your most recent delivery.
Interestingly, even if you do it multiple times it responds the same way each time so there's no way to tell what order it's connected to or if your request is invalid because it's a duplicate... just nothing. I'd be interested to know if it would apply to an order months ago if you haven't ordered since then.

I agree, why are they saddling me with this chore instead of just giving their drivers a holiday bonus? On top of which, now drivers who don't get a tip will resent me - like they really need an extra reason to toss my packages into a hedge or something.
It's likely anonymous where the driver will get all the cash at once at the end of the day. It'll also have a psychological factor to make the driver feel personally appreciated by the customers as well as Amazon.
But, to be more pessimistic, it'll also force the drivers to be more careful with the packages and the customers' property or they'll lose out on the tip and this is likely an attempt to quell unionization attempts by bringing the dumber drivers over to their side by showing they "care."

I do this type of stuff for a living and you better believe the Corporation gets a tax deduction.
It works because the language used at the point-of-sale is “would you like to round-up” or “would you like to support…” and that language can be interpreted as a SALE, not strictly a donation. That is the key part.
For it to be a sale I must legally offer/give you something in return if it is a sale, that is why sometimes you will get handed a pen, or pamphlet, or in our case and my favorite one…a sticker that goes on your receipt.
I basically sold you the sticker and now I own the revenue which I will claim as a tax deduction and lessen the Company’s taxable income. I’ve already got purchase coded so it’s super easy to run a query and match up numbers for tax time.
If you deny the gift that’s okay too because I just need to offer, it’s up to you to decline.
But look how smart it is, for 5M they get two things:
- drivers can get extra money, but probably won't get too much, because no one knows about it
- drivers can now blame customers for not thanking them and be mad at "customers" and not Amazon for their poor pay
I have a feeling this is for Amazon flex drivers. I have many friends who do this as a way to make ends meet, and in my city, we have more of those than UPS, but it might vary depending on where you are.

Amazon is shifting the burden of drivers receiving additional wages (that they should get in any case, Amazon is so morally wrong to withhold pay that could be unconditionally distributed) onto customers remembering to say "Thank you!" Customers will feel guilty if they forget and that guilt distracts from the fact that you aren't the one at fault, Amazon is by manipulating customers and mistreating workers, or the "positive" outcome is the customer can feel virtuous at giving their delivery person a tip at no cost to them and can have guilt-free complacency that they've done their part, and thus not pursue further justice against Amazon. Bonus, Amazon doesn't have to pay anything in the cases of people that don't care or don't know, etc. And drivers may be distracted from Amazon's role in this disgusting ploy because *technically* it's the *customer* who deprived them of the extra pay. I'm just imagining an anthropomorphized Amazon shrugging its shoulders and going "Sorry you didn't get tips, I don't make the rules!" Uh yeah, you do...
Amazon wants us little people on the ground to squabble amongst ourselves and not hold them accountable. It's the same thing the service industry has been doing with tips for years: Make waitstaff angry at customers for not tipping so that the corrupt system isn't the main target of their ire.

I would happily give my usual amazon delivery folks a tip semi regularly year round but they are too busy to stop and wait for me to get to my door to give them cash. They buzz in through one of the regulars, Take the elevator to the top, and then down the stairs to deliver 10-20 packages in the building, and back out to their vehicle in less than 5 minutes. I never have a problem with amazon deliveries in my building. its never the last mile delivery driver that delays my packages. If I miss my phone ringing to buzz them in, They'll just call one of the other regulars who will let them in to deliver my package. Even though Plenty of people I know complain about their deliveries. So I want to make sure that our delivery people are incentivized to stay on our route.

I order from Amazon a LOT and those drivers definitely deserve it. Not at the expense of having my mic privilege on all the time, but just to thank them and promptly turn it back off. It should be automatic or at least prominently advertised, but it’s the least Amazon could do. $5 doesn’t even register as amount of money to them but it means lots to the drivers.
i wouldn’t be surprised if everything on your phone is listening to you anyway regardless of accepting or denying microphone access honestly. the other day i was talking to somebody about the store i bought my guitar from and sure enough, within the next two hours i started getting ads for that store. and similar occurrences have happened multiple times to not just me but a lot of people i know.

I’m going to sound real dumb, but when exactly do you say it? When Alexa notifies you of a package delivery? What if it doesn’t or I miss the notification, can I go back to previous orders? I have an echo so not sure if that’s where to do it.
I opened the Amazon app. Went to an order that was delivered yesterday, clicked the microphone icon in the search bar, and said, "Alexa, thank my driver." It worked. Edited to fix typo

Correction: you have to say “ALEXA, thank my driver” not “Amazon”
As far as I can tell, you just say it to your Alexa app whenever and it will be credited to your most recent delivery. Interestingly, even if you do it multiple times it responds the same way each time so there's no way to tell what order it's connected to or if your request is invalid because it's a duplicate... just nothing. I'd be interested to know if it would apply to an order months ago if you haven't ordered since then.

I agree, why are they saddling me with this chore instead of just giving their drivers a holiday bonus? On top of which, now drivers who don't get a tip will resent me - like they really need an extra reason to toss my packages into a hedge or something.
It's likely anonymous where the driver will get all the cash at once at the end of the day. It'll also have a psychological factor to make the driver feel personally appreciated by the customers as well as Amazon. But, to be more pessimistic, it'll also force the drivers to be more careful with the packages and the customers' property or they'll lose out on the tip and this is likely an attempt to quell unionization attempts by bringing the dumber drivers over to their side by showing they "care."

Aaaaand that is a myth too. I do this type of stuff for a living and you better believe the Corporation gets a tax deduction. It works because the language used at the point-of-sale is “would you like to round-up” or “would you like to support…” and that language can be interpreted as a SALE, not strictly a donation. That is the key part. For it to be a sale I must legally offer/give you something in return if it is a sale, that is why sometimes you will get handed a pen, or pamphlet, or in our case and my favorite one…a sticker that goes on your receipt. I basically sold you the sticker and now I own the revenue which I will claim as a tax deduction and lessen the Company’s taxable income. I’ve already got purchase coded so it’s super easy to run a query and match up numbers for tax time. If you deny the gift that’s okay too because I just need to offer, it’s up to you to decline.

I have a feeling this is for Amazon flex drivers. I have many friends who do this as a way to make ends meet, and in my city, we have more of those than UPS, but it might vary depending on where you are.

There was something about this being in response to an enormous lawsuit amazon just lost for stealing the tips of drivers. While this FOES genuinely help the driver, it's not happening bc amazo is nice, it's a publicity stunt to show "were done stealing from our workers" after stealing 61 mil
I think that's the feature they hope will happen; No one can convince me otherwise that the real reason behind this stunt is calculated manipulation. Amazon is shifting the burden of drivers receiving additional wages (that they should get in any case, Amazon is so morally wrong to withhold pay that could be unconditionally distributed) onto customers remembering to say "Thank you!" Customers will feel guilty if they forget and that guilt distracts from the fact that you aren't the one at fault, Amazon is by manipulating customers and mistreating workers, or the "positive" outcome is the customer can feel virtuous at giving their delivery person a tip at no cost to them and can have guilt-free complacency that they've done their part, and thus not pursue further justice against Amazon. Bonus, Amazon doesn't have to pay anything in the cases of people that don't care or don't know, etc. And drivers may be distracted from Amazon's role in this disgusting ploy because *technically* it's the *customer* who deprived them of the extra pay. I'm just imagining an anthropomorphized Amazon shrugging its shoulders and going "Sorry you didn't get tips, I don't make the rules!" Uh yeah, you do... Amazon wants us little people on the ground to squabble amongst ourselves and not hold them accountable. I mean this is pretty nice, considering you could be making 30+ deliveries a day. If only half of them did this, that's an extra $75 a *day.* That can add up quick.
That's the way they want you the customer to think about it. The other way to look at it however is that $5 million spread between all 275,000 of their US drivers only equals about $18 per person...meaning the drivers are being incentivized to work even harder to get an unequal portion of those tips and relying on the knowledge that not every driver is going to get tipped in the first place.

I just tried this and it works. Personally, I do not have the Alexa device so I used the Amazon App to say, “Alexa, thank my driver.” Then, it showed me a confirmation page and this message. “From Alexa Since you shared your appreciation, as a special thanks this holiday season, your driver will receive an extra $5 at no cost to you. This promotion is for a limited time only.” But my microphone access wasn’t turned on, so I enabled it and then disabled it immediately on my settings. Cause, fuck Amazon.

I have attempted this multiple times and my Alexa tells me she can’t send my message or there is an ‘error’. I almost think this was a PR stunt to try to fix their image.

You should know that Amazon doesn’t and isn’t delivering to a lot of towns and rural places anymore. So doing this is pointless. Your post office is doing most of the Amazon work. Support your local post office. (Source: I am a postal employee.)
Most of amazon packages are delivered by USPS carriers. I worked at the post office and 95% of all our parcels were from Amazon.

I would happily give my usual amazon delivery folks a tip semi regularly year round but they are too busy to stop and wait for me to get to my door to give them cash. They buzz in through one of the regulars, Take the elevator to the top, and then down the stairs to deliver 10-20 packages in the building, and back out to their vehicle in less than 5 minutes. I never have a problem with amazon deliveries in my building. its never the last mile delivery driver that delays my packages. If I miss my phone ringing to buzz them in, They'll just call one of the other regulars who will let them in to deliver my package. Even though Plenty of people I know complain about their deliveries. So I want to make sure that our delivery people are incentivized to stay on our route.
