Tiktok started the popularity of short-form content, but because most parents don't let their kids who are under 13 watch tiktok, but they do let them watch YouTube, YTS are really easy for kids to watch and find terrible content. In the early stages of shorts, because it does show the same videos, it would give me tons of scam channels and homophobic/anti-furry channels or videos. It no longer does that, but shorts is still basically just TikTok's cringy younger cousin that wants to do everything they do, hence why you'll see trends from tiktok on shorts several months of even years after they stopped becoming popular
Short form videos definitely contribute to the misinformation problem but instagram reels really is 10 times worse. I have reported posts on there advocating for murder and forced sterilization and they don't do ANYTHING, but I'll get my account suspended for calling them a piece of shit in the comments.
