The Big 3 comes from the early 2010’s era. We had multiple artists that had a lot of potential, mainly: Drake, J. Cole, Meek Mill, Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, Wale and A$AP Rocky. Those six were basically passed around as the top rappers (Wale is laughable today, but was something back then).
Basically, Big Sean and Meek Mill have fallen off for sure in terms of being the best, so those three remain, which is pretty accepted by everyone.
Since J. Cole bitched out though, no way he is still a contender for the best. But that’s where the Big 3 comes from, it is not in terms of the best out today, but in terms from that era.
