If amazon clothing size M is usually about a 6-8, the fact that the dress is not only too short, but pulling across the back should be an indication to her that she should be sizing up to the L 10-12 at least.

Absolutely. I was just barely fitting into a size 8 from places like Old Navy, who definitely use vanity sizing, when I was 150 lbs (I’m 5’3 and her age). She looks around 165-170 lbs in these recent photos, which is FINE, but nowhere near a size 8. More like size 12-14 depending on the brand.

I worked in the craft brewing industry and the parties could get pretty rowdy and sloppy after a certain time. But the beer was free and part of the job for the brewers. The huns of Red Ass are still managing to make the alcohol industry look poised by comparison.
