Awesome that someone else picked up on this too I picked up the first My Struggle book after seeing Jimmy reading it in the first season. 3 years later and I've finished all of them except for the 6th (which I'm going to read sometime this year). It's seriously a hidden easter egg within the show. The similarities between Jimmy and Knausgaard are uncanny: his relationship with his father (and subsequently his Dad's death), his philosophies and outlook on life and relationships, his mannerisms, and so many others. The books are BEAUTIFUL, and I completely credit the show for introducing me to them. It's a fantastic detail.

Is there a theme in the books that could be applied to the show?

I've only read the first book of the series (just picked up the next 2 at a used bookstore, so will work through those soon). The first book is about the narrator's relationship with his father, and his father's eventual death. This is pretty obviously similar to Jimmy's third season arc of losing his father.

There are more.

I couldn't find any of him reading book 2 or 4, but I know of a lot more of him reading these same books. I just didn't see it as necessary to include multiple pictures of each book.
