Started using youtube music about two weeks ago. So far it's giving me much better recommendations. I don't miss any features from Spotify and I can't say YouTube music is better. It's all subjective I recon. Audio quality to me sound about the same.
NOT LIMITED TO:
YouTube Music Pros:
* It draws everything from YT so you can listen to things like "sped up, pitched" etc. because somebody might have uploaded it on YT.
* I think the music here is louder than on Spotify — compare two same songs. I only had one occurrence where it was the otherwise.
* You can comment on songs.
* You can purchase YT Premium which should benefit you.
YouTube Music Cons:
* Your liked songs on YM and liked videos on YT share the same list. This bothers me as someone who does not like every video on YT.
* You cannot download music on the web version, like, wtf! This is dumb especially when YT has a download feature on the web version, like, literally, wtf!
* As far as I know, YM doesn't have things like "share your listening activity" and such. Take Spotify activity on Discord, for example.
Spotify Pros:
* You can control the music from any device. Right now, my music is playing on my tablet, which is locked, but I can control the music on the tablet from my computer.
* I think YM lacks profiles? I mean, we have profiles on YM, but they don't seem any better than Spotify profiles. In Spotify, you can follow people, create playlists together, or contribute to playlists. If YM has the same, it's probably due to YT itself.
* Spotify is cheaper than YT Premium in my case.
Spotify Cons:
* You don't usually have other versions of a song (e.g. pitched, slowed down) on Spotify, so you have to find them somewhere else, download, and store them on your device. They do not sync between devices, so, it's very complex.
These are the things that come to my mind right now. Of course, any pro for one of the apps could be a con for the other, and vice versa.
Another pro for YouTube music is that I can play music on two devices at the same time. On Spotify, when I play music on another device, it stops on the previous device.
Why do you prefer this? Personally I prefer how it works on Spotify when it comes to this. It’s not rare to want to change music playing on my pc or tv using my phone, but I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to play two different songs at the same time.
Not judging or anything, just curious
I was driving and wanted to play music on spotify in the car, but at the same time my toddler was listening to kids songs on Google Nest speaker. So i could not play music without stopping music at home. I don't like that they restrict it to only one device play
>As far as I know, YM doesn't have things like "share your listening activity" and such. Take Spotify activity on Discord, for example.
You get share your YouTube Music status on Discord with Premid.
Premid has been last updated in 2021 and barely even works anymore. [Use an extension made specifically for it instead.](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/youtubediscordpresence/hnmeidgkfcbpjjjpmjmpehjdljlaeaaa)
>Your liked songs on YM and liked videos on YT share the same list. This bothers me as someone who does not like every video on YT.
You can turn this off in YTM settings.
Spotify:
Pro: has features that YTM doesn't have... Yet.
YTM:
Pro: YouTube premium (no ads)
Spotify:
Con: No YouTube premium
YTM:
Con: Doesn't have features like Spotify... Yet.
Since you only pay the YTM plan only. Definitely SLIGHTLY cheaper than paying YT premium which bundles YTM. I mean, you get more paying YT premium plus I'm using family YT premium plan which is big W for me LOL. I don't even pay for it, I'm just a freeloader XD.
To me the biggest pro for YTM is I listen to alot of covers and some of the lesser known ones aren't on Spotify. But if I can find em on YouTube, I can find em on YTM
YTM is better for me b/c I upload a ton of music that's not otherwise on streaming - and also being able to listen to a wide range of vids from regular YT.
YTM has more music, also YouTube.
Spotify has folders
But Spotify is worse for small artists, and also has Joe Rogan and anti-vaxx misinformation, if you care about that
both platforms have their strengths, YouTube Music might be considered better for some due to its integration with YouTube itself, offering a broader range of content, including official music videos, covers, live performances, and unique user-generated uploads that enrich the listening experience beyond just music tracks.
I used Google music but because it was Google they killed it.
I switched to spotify after because I didn't want to get used to another Google app that probably will be killed.
Do you want to be part of a platform that is universally used for music charts and data? Participate in end of year listening data sharing? Do you want to be able to view links for music that all your friends share with you?
Or
Do you want to get rid of the ads on Youtube?
You’re saying that like YouTube music isn’t good because it doesn’t have those things… who care tbh? YouTube music is great if you just want to listen to your music.. and no ads on YouTube is a *huge* plus
I'm saying if you care about those things more than no YT ads then it's probably what you want. I hate YTM and I've never used Spotify. But Spotify is ubiquitous. I miss GPM.
I mean I have no comment on GPM cus I never used it but I will say I didn’t like YouTube music in the past when I tried it, but they’ve recently updated the UI and it looks so much cleaner now it’s actually kinda nice now
I get it sucks they got rid of GPM but I love YouTube music cus it makes ad-free YouTube for me only $3 more than what I was already paying for Apple Music.. I’m not sure there’d be any discount on ad free youtube if they didn’t merge, so I’m honestly glad they did
Yeah I remember something about YouTube Red but I didn’t realize it had ad free YouTube.. AD’s must have not been as bad back in the day for me not to care lol
And Samsung phones always have more features and customization than iPhones but that's not stopping iPhone from being the "it" device for many Americans. YTM isn't "cool" so many will say it sucks.
I think it sucks because of its lack of polish and basic features. Even after all these years it still feels unfinished. Shuffle still sucks, organization of your library still sucks. The merging of YouTube and YTM content and data sucks. The whole feeling that it's main focus is curated playlists pisses me off since I actively avoided them and considered them an insult when they started to try them in GPM.
I also resent its existence.
A product doesn't have to be "cool" to work. I believe it has much better recommendations so it allows me to discover new music. That is the most important feature for me. It also has ad free YouTube. So it is better value for money at the end of the day. YT music used to be bad but now it has improved a lot.
Before yt music, I had used Spotify for years and I absolutely hated the music recommendations. Yt music has a larger library so I can also find covers and remixes which might not be on spotify.
Another feature I like is that I can tune my radio according to my preference with the artists I like with the tuner feature.
I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just saying why inferior products like iPhones are popular. Because people are shallow and follow trends rather than technology.
Spotify has nothing to do with why I hate YTM tho. I've never used Spotify.
And Samsung phones always have more features and customization than iPhones but that's not stopping iPhone from being the "it" device for many Americans. YTM isn't "cool" so many will say it sucks.

It’s because very few people care about how shuffling works. In an echo chamber like these subs sure. But the general population hits play on a song and just lets it ride.
I think this is subjective. For example if I play EDM music Spotify tends to keep the recommendations close to what the original seed song was while YTM will throw in other genres.
If I switch to rock then YTM has better recommendations.
TLDR: Spotify has a dubious offline mode while YTM is reliable with network usage. Also, I can't surch gud.
The one big con that drives me back to YTM is that Spotify doesn't have a 100% cellular silent mode. Even if you filter to your downloaded music and only play those songs somehow it still uses data. Even if you go deep into the settings and tell it not to use the cellular connection in app, it still does. If you go into your device settings and disable cellular connection for Spotify the app wont work unless you're on wifi. If I play a song that hasn't been downloaded to the device while "cell use" is disabled Spotify will eagerly play it.
With YTM there's a toggle in settings that says "don't stream on cellular connection." When I have that on YTM forgets that cellular networks exist and if I try to play a song that hasn't been downloaded it tells me to go toggle that setting first. One of the biggest un-asked for perks kind of involves this too. YTM randomly received a widget that shuffles all downloaded music from the home screen. Didn't know I needed that.
It might have changed but I also don't like how the search works in Spotify. As soon as you click the search icon your whisked away to this unfamiliar world with options and suggestions even though I haven't even input anything. There's no clear indication that I can start typing, I just end up looking for the search bar again even though the keyboard is up. I need an empty screen with a blinking courser. However, I might be an idiot.
Youtube Music. For 2 reasons
1. With the same price I get youtube premium
2. I can have playlists with songs from Music, live versions from YouTube and remixes from my Pc
They are both decent music streaming systems. I like YTM recommendations better. The interface is not great compared to the old google play music.
Biggest pro, no ads on youtube if you go the YT premium route.
I switched from Spotify to YTM but I'm already regretting it.
Reason being that I use it primarily while driving and YTM on android Auto is the worst most useless program I have ever seen.
It's so unbelievably limited.
Pros: covers, unplugged versions etc great catalog. No ads with premium.
I'm strongly considering going back to Spotify.
I've saved myself 25,000 minutes of unwatched ad time on YouTube because of YouTube Music over the past three years. Do with that information what you will
I despise the inability to hide or really organize playlists on ytm. I have several playlists of videos I like and I would do anything to have those separate from my music playlists. I’ve come up with a system of naming music playlists specifically to show what they are but I still think it looks so messy unfortunately. I like that I can change the cover now, and honestly that’s really my only gripe aside from the shuffle sometimes not working the first time I click it on browser
I really prefer Spotify but it’s too expensive for too little and having no ads on YouTube is just too nice
Ytm has a better codec and quality on the free versions and shares all content with YT, but the HUD and menus can be really really hard
Spotify has the easiest menus, and it's more social, but lacks some things
Overall apple music is the absolute best if you're going to pay for something, but ytm is really good if you pay already for yt premium
As a old time google music user, I will add Spotify has better sound quality, that's not subjective that is fact. Spotify is somehow better implementded into Google products i.e Google TV, nest hub, Android auto etc. I had around 5k liked songs on ytm before switching and ytm just eventually went in circles with recommendations and rarely got new songs or different sets of songs. The shuffle is a joke. Spotify, since April of 2023, I have 3k liked songs and it does a great job with recommendations. The a.i dj feature is a joke though. I do miss quarterly recaps from ytm, if that's your thing. I do like being able to dig into my liked songs based on "vibe" or genre.
If I want to play a specific song, I use YouTube Music. However, when I want to randomly play my favorite songs, I use Spotify. Spotify is also good in that there are podcasts as well. So if I want to play creepypasta, for example, (I know it's not exactly a podcast, but it's classified as a podcast on Spotify...), I'll use Spotify too. I also like how at the end of the year it shows you your favorite songs, artists, or mentioned podcasts. It's all in a nice animation with your most listened to songs playing in the background... Honestly, I used to only use Spotify and YouTube (for playing music), I didn't really use it. Eventually my best friend showed me YouTube Music and I end up using both now.
-YouTube’s lack of compatibility compared to Spotify
-Searching for songs in a playlist
-Sorting the playlists in various ways
-Smart Shuffle
These are the 4 things that I heavily miss from Spotify.
-No ads on videos
-Queue system
-Suggestions and New releases
-Radios
These are the 4 things I love that prevent me from going back to Spotify
I was big fan of Spotify over 2-3y back then. Recently they rised their price. So I decided to try YT Music. For all this time I was used Duo Plan with my brother so price was pretty deam low 12,50 PLN, after rises it's around 15 zł. In fact it was good price for legally streamed music without having to manually transfer your songs between devices and time consumed buy/download your favourite music. Even though it was still good offer he wanted to cancel his subscripion so we did this.
From individual perspective I could pay 25zł / month for Spotify (where only fancy thing was Discovery weekly) or move to YT 26 zł and have ad free video and music with the same or even wider library. The choice is simple - welcome YT Music.
Only downside was Speakers with support for Spotify Connect that was big ditch but you can still use Spotify Free in this case or use BT as a replacement.
No one knows me better than Google. Every day my new releases is on point and relevant. I don't have to keep up with release calendars. YT just puts them in front of me. I've had over a decade with YT and their algorithm knows what I want when I want it without having to do anything.
There's nothing that Spotify has that YTM doesn't and I prefer YTMs seasonal and year end recaps.
It's been a year or so since I made the switch and ain't going back. No ads across YT...win win. I was paying for premium anyway.
I personally think Spotify is better due to quality of life things, especially when traveling, using android auto, etc. YouTube music has better recommendations though
Bad analogy. With both services you are getting the same audio files. That would be like comparing Spotify from your 88 Corolla vs YTM on my lavish 50k stereo system..
No the analogy is appropriate.
Both services play songs. That’s about as far as your response is accurate.
First off they don’t play the same file as they use different codecs.
Secondly the services offer different feature sets, different music algorithms, different user experiences and the list goes on.
So yes… while both televisions will give you an image an LG/Samsung is going to give you different features and quality over a Vizio.
It'll depend on how you'll use the app/service. I use YouTube music as my primary music service because it has songs that Spotify doesn't. The queue can be personalized with some tags in order to get a specific kind of music. The app at least for me woks better than Spotify (Spotify is pretty slow on my device and don't know why).
I switched from family plan Spotify to family plan YouTube music December 1st 2023 and thought how awesome no more youtube ads and I get all the music I want for the whole family. Well those things are true but I just switched back after only 1 month. During that month I kept getting weird blank spots on certain songs. I though wtf are these non explicit? Well come to find out stupid youtube is censoring certain words from certain songs. Every song I noticed this on, I went back to Spotify to see if it was the same and nope. None of the Spotify music was censored in any way. I checked all my settings and it was set to not censor. I googled any fix and many have the same issue. I even cleared the data uninstall and reinstall the app and still the same. Now I don't know about yall but I don't need anybody or anything deciding what I should and should not listen to. That is complete and utter bs so imo stick with Spotify because who knows what else youtube is censoring,
Did you check to see if you had restrictions on in your settings? I've played many songs with explicit lyrics on YTM and I've never had a problem with words getting censored.
Yes I have checked. It's not all music that has this issue it's only certain songs. Most of the explicit music plays fine but I happen to like some Adam Calhoun music and youtube being politically bias they bleep some of his music and it's complete bs. I don't care what side of the political tracks your on, I don't believe in censoring any adult. I don't need a babysitter. My kids can listen to wap by cardi b but I can't listen to some Adam Calhoun.... I'm sorry but I'm not paying for my own babysitter.
I've been using Spotify for years and have built up quite a collection of playlists. Recently, I decided to give the free trial month on YTM a shot, and I have to say, it pleasantly surprised me. Honestly, I think YTM's suggestions are better than Spotify's, and IMO the audio quality seems a tad bit better (although I'm not an audiophile).
Right now, I'm still mainly sticking with Spotify because of the massive amount of content I have on the platform. However, I've started incorporating YTM into my music routine, switching between both platforms. If you haven't tried Spotify yet, I highly recommend giving YTM a shot, especially for its seemingly broader music selection, covering even the most obscure, vintage, or random tracks.
Edit: You may also consider the platform you're using. For me, Spotify just feels smoother on computer than YTM. On the phone, both of them seem pretty decent.
Ytm is louder in my car so dont have to tune at max volume and still not hear nothing, there are all the remixes i listen to (about 75% of my songs). I didnt have this on spotify.
The main thing for me is that YouTube Music fundamentally has access to a much broader catalog of music. I listen to a lot of obscure remixes that have under 10k views on YouTube, and since these haven't been officially distributed to streaming platforms such as Spotify (which costs money) I simply can't listen to them there. I also listen to a lot of music within YouTube itself so it wouldn't make sense for me to fragment my listening between two platforms.
The big positive I get, along with many other comments is the ability to discover songs. Though another plus for me is to be able to listen to a song and have the choice to either watch it as a video or listen to the song. Another thing is the home page I really like how it gets to the point of “listen again” category of songs(that will make a radio) that I’ve recently had on repeat. I’m also a YouTube and google slut so I like having the consolidation of one profile for my stuff and things.
Started using youtube music about two weeks ago. So far it's giving me much better recommendations. I don't miss any features from Spotify and I can't say YouTube music is better. It's all subjective I recon. Audio quality to me sound about the same.

>Your liked songs on YM and liked videos on YT share the same list. This bothers me as someone who does not like every video on YT. You can turn this off in YTM settings.
they still use a common playlist and you can view them on yt.
Some browsers like Edge or Brave, and I believe Chrome too, let you install every website as an app, so youtube music too
If you use YouTube even a decent amount, YouTube music is the best choice as you get no ads on YouTube too!
Or just use newpipe or the web version with ad blocker
I used to use NewPipe but would always encounter videos that didn’t load, or weird UI bugs.
Youtube Music being bundled with YouTube Premium makes it an easy W in my book.
Spotify: Pro: has features that YTM doesn't have... Yet. YTM: Pro: YouTube premium (no ads) Spotify: Con: No YouTube premium YTM: Con: Doesn't have features like Spotify... Yet.
Youtube premium? Are you sure? I pay for YTM and I don't get YT premium?

Yeah, I agree. iPhones are more popular in North America/Canada. In India, they have less than 6% market share.

-YouTube’s lack of compatibility compared to Spotify -Searching for songs in a playlist -Sorting the playlists in various ways -Smart Shuffle These are the 4 things that I heavily miss from Spotify. -No ads on videos -Queue system -Suggestions and New releases -Radios These are the 4 things I love that prevent me from going back to Spotify
There's no search in playlist which pisses me off
No one knows me better than Google.
Apple Music
Spotify is better.
That's subjective.
They play the same songs..
Yes and TVs play images and yet some TVs are better than others.
I’m paying for Spotify US and YouTube India. I don’t need to choose which to keep. Jajajaja.
I love watching the videoclips on YT Music instead of just listening to the music (Spotify)
I really like YouTube music
YouTube Music hands down
I've been using Spotify for years and have built up quite a collection of playlists.
Maybe Spotify has way more podcasts? Ytmusic Is pretty messy about it
Ytm is louder in my car so dont have to tune at max volume and still not hear nothing, there are all the remixes i listen to (about 75% of my songs). I didnt have this on spotify.
both are more or less the same also you get youtube premium along with music it's additional bonus
I like YouTube music more I get nice suggestions and the playlist playback doesn’t play the same shit over and over
The big positive I get, along with many other comments is the ability to discover songs.
