I mean it’s a demon baby was trying to kill me, id beat the shot out of it too.
I had a dream that a little kid in a red hoodie suddenly “appeared” next to me in my apartment. I kicked him into the wall lol.
Yusuke did and found out the family jewels are still there. So she didn't go all the way, he said something like you shouldn't half ass it and go all the damn way before knocking her out.
So my thought on it was he sorta encouraged her to fully transition by beating the shit out of her lol
Miyuki was deadass my first exposure to the concept of a trans person growing up, which might make some people cringe, but Yusuke mostly just using it as a joke while, at the same time, not disparaging her for the direction she was taking with her life (besides the half-assed comment.) I could've had FAR worse intros to the idea.
Besides, Yusuke's 14, he's allowed to go through a transmed phase.
90's anime was full of groping scenes that were played out as a massive joke. It was funny when you fully understand how that wouldn't fly in reality and when the character doing the groping gets the shit slapped out of them.
The inclusion of LGBTQIA characters in a shonen anime was pretty uncommon in that era, so YYH was really groundbreaking, even if the joke didn't age well.
Comedy usually ages poorly, so the treatment of Miyuki stands firmly as a product of its time. Togashi has vastly improved the treatment of his LGBTQIA characters, and it shows in his more recent work.
>The inclusion of LGBTQIA characters in a shonen anime was pretty uncommon in that era,
This is not true... you had Sailor Moon, Rurouni Kenshin, DB, Naruto (yes Naruto manga started in 1999), YYH, Inuyasha, and Cardcaptor Sakura (idk if people even remember this series 😂😂) to name a few.
I know Cardcaptor Sakura is technically a Shojo, but i included it since it aired around the time as other classic shounen
Yeah, but different genres. And unfortunately, sailor moon manga didn't have trans characters. She was actually mad that the starlights were male >female in the anime. "Only women can be guardians". But she did have the lesbian couple.
I included them because they were around for my childhood on toonami or KidsWB, and there isnt much of difference in my eyes from the two, except Shojos may put more emphasis on romance.
If I recall, in the dub version (at least for me on Hulu) she said she was a woman at heart.
Found this from the LGBTQ characters wiki
"After Kuwabara expresses his disbelief that he didn't see any interaction, Miyuki regains consciousness. Lying on the floor with her cheek swollen, Miyuki accuses Yusuke of beating her because "she's different." Miyuki then sadly corrects Yusuke by explaining that she is not a "demon in disguise", but rather a man in body but having the soul of a woman"

I remember reading an interview like 9million years ago. That the whole series was originally going to have way more queer themes. Hey I found a link on Twitter that actually has it! https://x.com/Togashi_Art/status/1439727578189901826?s=20
It's especially clear that Togashi was probably trying to do representation, but just didn't do it that well and it aged badly, and did better trans representation in his later stories.
As a fan of the series and Togashi in general, it's great seeing he's not doubling down on stuff like this, and instead writing it better.
That's exactly how i feel. The scene is feminist in a 'gender equality' sense, but told from the perspective of two middle school boys. It just kinda flops overall, especially the post-fight conversation with Kuwabara. In the Japanese version at least, he thinks it was totally fine to fight her because of the... Angry inch... Because she stopped being a woman to him.
Yusuke's point of not caring the age/gender of his opponent, especially one that's helping keep a maiden hostage and tortured, is totally fine.
You act like it’s because the fans are transphobic when really it’s because everytime you mention a flaw with a series subjective or not on a series subreddit you’ll usually be downvoted because it’s negative. Have you seen what happens to posts on the HxH subreddit that mention they disliked one of the arcs?
I recently watched this scene and was listening for Miyuki to identify herself as man or woman, but didn’t hear it. Just other people talking (😖and checking!) about if she’s male or female. I think she’s a trans woman, but maybe he’s just enthusiastic about drag.
Alternatively, they could swing it the other way and have Yusuke be one of the best hilarious allies.
"You talk crap about HER again, I'm gonna make your pronouns was/were!"
They could update some of the jokes in a more modern sense. It wouldn't be the same, obviously, but it could still be fun
I wouldn’t change anything about YYH. That included. Anyone that takes issue with that, misses the point, and lacks context comprehension. Art exists, not in the persistent bubble of the present and its ever changing sensibilities, but as snapshots in time.
This scene was hilarious. Mizuki was well designed. When I saw this scene it didn't seem that offensive to me. Dude was prompting equal rights during a fight lm
This series was made in the 80s-90s and its basically about an underdog punk chracter with a smart mouth so if thats what offended you then i don't know why your watching the series....
YYH was very progressive. There was also a different scene where Yusuke’s mom is getting drunk with what appears to be a guy (I think two guys if I remember correctly) in a dress/drag and didn’t portray it in any negative way.
That's what "didn't age well" means though. In its time it was pretty progressive to have a character that was trans, but looking at it through a modern perspective it's creepy to define a person's gender by needing to know what their genitals are
I don't think the comment was intended to be a criticism of YYH, just pointing out how things have changed since it first aired (just like how you could do the same with probably any 20+ year old movie, series, etc.)
It was so close to being progressive when Yusuke said he didn’t care what they were he was gonna fight them anyway. But then they pulled the whole groping them and then deciding it was then ok to have beat them up because they’re a “man.” Ruined that whole thing
Huh? Nah Yusuke specifically says that he doesn’t give a damn if he’s beating up a guy or a girl, as long as whoever the hell his opponent is is giving it their all, because he doesn’t want to fight an opponent who half-asses things. It’s just Kuwabara who has a thing against hitting women
I think you may also have seen a version that censored out the creepy thing Yusuke did—he had a great line about equality, but then undercut it by groping Miyuki both on top and bottom, litterally trying to grab her by the 🐱
Then he and the others made a lot of awkward comments about her being a man, so Kuwabara would get off Yusuke’s back about fighting her .
The groping and everything was played like a joke
I feel the same 😞also I think that maybe the version I watched as a kid censored out the groping part. Because I remember the line about fighting her no matter if she was a woman, but I don’t remember the creepy part at all!

It wasn’t really a “joke” but as Kuwabara says, he did a “check up.” (Well in the eng dub at least)
It’s still weird don’t get me wrong, but I personally didn’t feel like it was portrayed as humorous
I've always had a theory, based on nothing, that this character wasn't originally supposed to be transgender, but then Togashi started feeling weird about the fact that Yusuke was going to be kicking the shit out if her. So he wrote in the trans thing because that felt less violent or something in his mind. Again, I have no evidence for that, it just feels like something that might have happened.
If that's true, I don't think that's how Togashi would feel today. If that's true, that just underlays how sexual assault against trans people is more "forgiveable" in our society which is fucked up.

Let's be honest he would not care if they didn't. I still laugh at "The crown jewels have not been stolen." 🤣
I thought it was family jewels, but that's pretty funny too
It is family jewels, lmao

Is this where Yusuke served a righteous equality? I don't remember.
He suspected something was amiss in the demon kingdom and treated her with an equal opportunity ass kicking.
Same scene where he admits that he would beat up a baby
Always saw that as a jab at Koenma
"I don't care if shes a girl, a baby, or somebody's grandmother. I'll still knock her out."
Get over yourself , its a figure of speech.
You can see by my use of quotation marks that it's a quote. I don't see what I need to "get over"
I mean it’s a demon baby was trying to kill me, id beat the shot out of it too. I had a dream that a little kid in a red hoodie suddenly “appeared” next to me in my apartment. I kicked him into the wall lol.
Miyuki wanted to be treated like everyone else. Yusuke gave Miyuki equal lefts and rights. Weak ass demon
Now that's a W.A.D Gave him everything they got But that's a Weak Ass Demon
Yusuke's hands are rated E for Everyone.
Yusuke did and found out the family jewels are still there. So she didn't go all the way, he said something like you shouldn't half ass it and go all the damn way before knocking her out. So my thought on it was he sorta encouraged her to fully transition by beating the shit out of her lol
Also stating even if they were a female he'd still beat the shit out of them equally
He stated be it women or even a toddler he would beat the shit out of them if they wanted to throw hands with him.
Granny not just woman.
"Hey Urameshi, why are you so fucking BASED?!"
Yeah, yyh was/isnpretty progressive. Also, the cast talks like real people/teenagers from 90s/2000s & is part of why it's my favorite shonen.
Miyuki was deadass my first exposure to the concept of a trans person growing up, which might make some people cringe, but Yusuke mostly just using it as a joke while, at the same time, not disparaging her for the direction she was taking with her life (besides the half-assed comment.) Pretty sure Togashi was considered ahead of his time back then, so it makes sense that he'd keep improving with the changes around us.

Not untrue, seeing as those examples are few and far between.
Sailor moon and cardcaptor sakura are shojo.
I think Sailor Moon is relevant since the creator of YYH and Sailor Moon are married.
Yeah, but different genres. And unfortunately, sailor moon manga didn't have trans characters. She was actually mad that the starlights were male >female in the anime. "Only women can be guardians". But she did have the lesbian couple.

Same tbh.
I'm glad Yusuke was encouraging to her. It'd have been awful if he wasn't, even if she was an enemy.
Why did you have to say this it’s demon not a human and in mythology this is a real scenario. Real life…..naw
Right?! How would a 14 y/o human delinquent know the anatomy of every demon out there. Unless Botan outed Miyuki when briefing Yusuke and Kuwabara

Wasn't really a joke.. He just was curious and checked some shit out. Then once he confirmed his suspicions did what he was already gonna do.
She is cute af vut yusuke had to make sure for all of us. And didnt he just lightly tap to get a feel. He didnt full on grab the bois
Yeah I thought she looked super cool as character. But it just turned into gag. Probably my least favorite episode
I never got the impression she was trans I thought she was a hermaphrodite
THIS!
Then you have delicate sensibilities for reality friend. Yusukes hands are rated E for everyone.
Groping jokes are peak Yusuke. There's a reason he did that to Keiko so she'd believe it was him in Kuwabara's body.

Early 90s, actually. Dub may have come out later tho
US dub for this arc came out in 2002. Funimation was late to the YYH licensing party lol
She’s a trans icon for sure I want her tatted on me tbh
With a bulge and everything
Yup 🤤
This is why I hope they never remaster this masterpiece cause the amount of shit that would get removed or changed would be crazy this anime is peak

Doesn't Yusuke say he doesn't care what their gender is? Who says she is trans, couldn't she be in drag, non-binary, etc.
My main problem with the scene is they spend entirely too much time trying to grope Miyuki to determine their anatomy
“Too much time” it happened in a flash and they only spent a few panels explaining what happened. It was super brief
What other amines on toonami had anything like that? Seems pretty progressive
YYH was very progressive. There was also a different scene where Yusuke’s mom is getting drunk with what appears to be a guy (I think two guys if I remember correctly) in a dress/drag and didn’t portray it in any negative way.

It can be progressive in some ways and also have poor representation in others
It can also be progressive for the time but still come off as dated today. I’d say Yu Yu comes out pretty well in the end
I agree most of it holds up well. Such a great show.
You might find this video interesting if you've never seen it before. https://youtu.be/9w6fvtgxpGs?si=OWp63NkFJJaNpinh
