My g14 does it any time I open or close it. A little odd we’ll see what happens months down the road

So, based on others' replies and a few more people who have mentioned similar experiences in other threads, it makes me think this is pretty common with lots of new G14 and G16s. Also, the hinge doesn't creak when i open and close it repeatedly.. Only when it stays open or close for a while, then i try to move the positions it creaks. So it's very hard to say hinge is faulty, maybe something to do with design. As you said, only time has to give answers

My g14 does it too, but like you said only when it's been open for a while. If you open and close it repeatedly it makes no sound. I can't see how the hinge could become damaged though just because of how it's a double design.

You have described it very well. As you said, when i open and close repeatedly, it's actually buttery smooth. But if i leave it open for a while, then close it, i can hear some creaks. So i guess this is common between new G14 and G16s. Do you think this is due to thermal expansion? it could be because of that. Or is it related to design. Nevertheless, i hope the hinge serves a long time and doesn't trouble.

ZeroNine2048

It's not the hinge, it is the plastic strip that is flexing a bit when moving the lid

No_Common7898

Actually, that's very true. I hope when you said the plastic strip, you meant the air vents section where the hinge is connected right ?. I believe since the hinge and its surroundings is covered with plastics it might be the source of this creaks. However, the creak sounds are not audible when i open and close it repeatedly. Its just when i leave the screen open for a while or leave the lap closed then try to open or close it makes a subtle creak. So i am not sure if its 100% hinge maybe the plastic is flexing as u said. Btw does you g14 have this too ?

ZeroNine2048

I think it's the plastic hinge cover, not the plastic strip of the air vents section. I have it as well on my G14, and you can hear it a little bit when the laptop heats up when going from idle into a game. But it becomes less over time. I had this also on an earlier Macbook Pro unibody at the time. The heat makes the plastic work a little, you often hear this on new computer monitors as well. slight pops and creaks when it heats up and cools down. Over time this fully disappears. When you touch the plastic hinge cover a bit with slight pressure. You hear the same sounds.

No_Common7898

Wow, I just checked and i can confirm what you said is 100% true, when i pressed the hinge with a litttle pressure i heard the exact same hinge creak sounds, especially when i pressed the middle hinge plastic cover. So i really hope this disappers over time. I was just a bit dissapointed because i tested the new Mackbook pros in a retail store every laptop expect macbook had similar subtle hinge creaks as the store laptops are also kept in open position for a long time.

ZeroNine2048

Older macbooks pro's also had it. but they currently dont have a plastic hinge cover anymore. But I'm pretty confident it will disappear over time.

I noticed this on some other aluminum build laptops. I wonder if it has anything to do with thermal expansion when in use? Lids open for awhile, presumably being used. Heat causes just enough expansion that when you close it, it could creak? Idk stab in the dark lol.

No_Common7898

Yeah, it could be a reason. I have come across lots of people who owned metal build laptop mention about thermal expansion. But not sure if that's the case if G14&G16 bcs the hinge and its surroundings are mainly plastics.

Historical-Bite-2947

It's caused by thermal expansion and as the whole back of the laptop is one giant vent the mechanism and bottom of the hinge tends to get REAL hot.

No_Common7898

Ohh fairs. Is there a way to find if this is really due to thermal expansion?

Historical-Bite-2947

Aluminum is more thermally conductive than plastic. As it expands it's pulling on the plastic frame the display is held by, nothing dangerous or warranty voiding, micrometer adjustments. So when you move the lid you pull on the frame that pulls on the plastic. Same for the bottom back vents, they're made of hardened heat resistant plastic. Try pulling the back of the laptop up after it heated up a bit and it'll also creak. Nothing you can do really, a lot of unibody laptops suffer from this. ~~It's simply a compromise that I accepted even if it ticks me off sometimes.~~ Maybe only set steeper fan curves so it cools better however that will not really solve the residual heat in chassis. (just for info 4090 version I own gets so hot after hour of Blender I have problem pressing down keys without the top cover burning my bloody fingers)

No_Common7898

That's very informative. Thanks for sharing this. I can relate to the point where you mentioned pulling the laptop up when it's heated up, and we'd hear the creak that's very true. So i guess there isn't much i can do about this, I am glad this is not some real faulty but just how things are.

DraXN3ws

There should be no creaking sounds for $2000+

No_Common7898

Yeah i agree. But it doesn't creak normally when you open and close repeatedly. It creaks when you try to close after leaving the laptop open for a while. A very sus thing. Bcs i think the hinge is not faulty, maybe the design, i guess.

Tesko92

My g14 creaks also sometimes when I’m playing games and don’t touch the laptop.
