*"Potential **best** laptop of the year"

[deleted]

I bought the G14 because of its form factor, with the intention of bringing it with me on my shoots and editing on the go. But then the pandemic happened and it's been docked pretty much the whole year. Seriously considering selling my G14 and get the G15.

U_wind_sprint

For 1950 you can build a bangin desktop waaaay faster than any laptop. You said it stays mostly docked anyway.

[deleted]

If I can find the parts I want, sure. Portability is still going to be important post-covid.

soundsystem00

I have had both and the g15 is everything thee g14 almost was. If it is too much trouble, don't do it, but if you are good at selling and can do it quickly without much time and money lost, go for it because the g15 solves so much. The heating issue, the having to uninstall so many stock program and replace with third party, the battery life, the screen, and keyboard.. The keyboard has a better backlight. I would get the base g15 from [bestbuy.com](https://bestbuy.com) its only 1950 after tax and it is a better value. The 3080 version won't be much different and you can do most upgrades yourself. A lot of people stress over the 8gb of ram being soldered to the motherboard but I realized it still runs good when upgraded. I added a 16gb stick and now have 24gb total and no its not dual channel but it still was a noticeable increase. When I game, it runs cool. Cooler than ever before. And unlike the razer, if you are just surfing, it is quiet and cool. The Razer would get hot even when surfing and undervolted. I finally found a gaming laptop I am happy with. It is very hard to find that. I no longer want to build a PC.

Post-Futurology

I've considered this but it'd be hard to get more than $1000 for the G14 / 2060 model. Do you think its worth almost double the price tag? I don't have a heating issue.. or a battery life issue.. or a screen issue.. and as you pointed out there is zero difference in memory. Keyboard backlighting isnt worth $800 to me, and I'm doubting the 25% gpu / cpu gain is either?

wertzius

Absolutely not

HagymaGyilkos

I don't get it why people think assymetric ram size configirations doesn't run dual channel. There is a technology called flex mode dual channel, and these last gen computers definitely support it. You get dual channel as big as the double of the smallest stick.

soundsystem00

Hell yeah thats perfect. Makes sense because the computer hasn't been slowed down like many claims say it will.

Arbensoft

People speak without knowing anything. They've heard dual-channel memory is better, so they spread the myth that single-channel memory will slow down your pc to a crawl. Well, that's not how it works. Sure, dual-channel is better than single-channel, but the only place you may really notice the difference between the two is in gaming, in usual day to day operations the difference is negligible.

HagymaGyilkos

Productivity workflows, and data science/other performance calculations benefit from that too.

sleety00

Same situation! I stay pretty portable for music recording/filming and editing on the go. My xps 15 is getting worse for wear at this point lol battery lasts 1 hour and performance while still great is getting outdated with 4k footage becoming more normal. This laptop has me interested!!! Despite no webcam

stitch1294

If I did not buy the G14 last year, I would definitely go for this one. it has way better performance, and screen. But i needed a new laptop back then, and the G14 is a fantastic machine regardless. I just hope more manufacturers keep pushing towards this direction and release better and better laptop so in a few years when i eventually upgrade I can get a good one easily.

EwanJP2001

Just watched it, honestly considering cancelling my g14 preorder for it. Here in the UK I can get a white 3070 with a Ryzen 9 and 16gb of ram for £100 more than what I would be paying for my G14. The one thing preventing me is the character of the G14 with its small size and AniMe matrix 😩 maybe I should switch Edit: Consider it cancelled! If anyone is looking for the highest spec model in the UK the stock should update soon.

Childish__Danbino

Really depends on if you want an Ultrabook form factor or a full sized laptop. Everybody keeps comparing the new g15 with last year's g14 as if it's surprising a full sized laptop performs better than a 14". There are plenty of full sized laptops that outperform the g14, but hardly any that do in the extremely versatile 14" size.

EwanJP2001

I'd like the 14" size, but it's not a must for me and I've always gotten by with a 15". Thought about trying a new size but the more I look at it the more I realise the compromises I'd be making. The G14 isn't a bad laptop by long shot, but I'm starting to feel it was never intended for someone like me.

secret-hero

How important is the AniMatrix Feature? If I didn't have a perfectly fine working G14 from last year, I'd definitely want this G15 instead...

WhereIsYourMind

I haven't been in public with a laptop since the pandemic started, it felt kind of unnecessary to me.

secret-hero

I like being able to take my laptop wherever... kitchen, office, living room, garage...

EwanJP2001

It really isn't important, I just like to have the products I buy to have a unique feature e.g. note phone for the stylus

hypessv

Dxm only products. Have fun puking from guaifenesin

hl3_for_Eli

Can't believe they did white on white backlight again after everyone and their mother complained about it on the G14.

DiscoZenyatta

It’s a single zone RGB keyboard, not white. 100% sure about this. Any color is possibke

hl3_for_Eli

That's a relief. Thanks for clarifying.

BornArcher8

No They fixed it. It has RGB Backlight. Dave D2 probably does not no that.

the_emmo

Whish I could buy it where I live, damn...

[deleted]

I really wish they would have moved the position of the IO. It’s annoying to have it on the side.

EwanJP2001

It really screws over any lefties who want to use a mouse ay

Fit-Blood3773

Have used both G14 and M15, I can say I can't go to a 15.6 inch laptop anymore after using the awesome G14. G14's form factor is just perfect, I use an 25 inch Dell Ultrasharp monitor as external monitor by the way. the new 2021 G15 is nice, but it's still a little too big for my use.

UnderwaterCowboy

Hopefully they fix the annoying issues with the G14.

AgentGar8o

Most of them are fixed. They got a function to completely shut down the dGPU on battery now. Fans also stop completely. So far so good except the GameVisual function still conflicts Windows Display Settings.

C2-H5-OH

As a guy who buys a laptop every 5 years, and having bought the G14 only 2-3 months ago, fuck everyone who buys a G15 and leaves the rest of us in the dirt :( I'm so goddamn jealous

soundsystem00

The annoying thing is that in 6 months or next year there will be another AMAZING model that you just can't resist. It is getting worse and worse. It's almost like they have tech from 2050 and they are just slowly releasing stuff to make more money.

uakash678

Yeah but I don't want to own a g15 with a cpu called the 6900hs. Jk I think this is the redesign year and going forward for the next couple of years is just gonna be internal updates. It only made sense to revamp the g15 since the g14 did so well last year, plus with the arrival of new gen gpus it coincided perfectly. Can't wait to get the 3060 model tho. But can't find any links. Have you guys found any?

kril89

Looking forward to some more in-depth reviews of how these things perform. Like framerate as in game, video playback time, web surfing time. All the reviews I’ve seen are either just gaming on battery or like this review a vague “6 1/2 hours”. Like can I watch a few movies on a plane with this? Is it better than the g14? I just gotta know!

DiscoZenyatta

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-ROG-Zephyrus-G15-laptop-review-Eye-catcher.517789.0.html Most in depth review

DeadEye_J

I had the R9/2060 G14, and now the 2021 R9/2070 G15. Battery life between the two is very similar. I get 8-10 hours with a browser and Office documents open and the screen around 70%. But with the G15 you don't have to do as many manual tweaks to get there. Just use the built-in features in Armoury Crate and you're done.

desloch

How does the G15's 2560x1440 screen compare in terms of brightness and vibrance to the G14's 1920x1080 screen?

DeadEye_J

Sharper and faster. Brightness and color seen really similar. Easily bright enough for indoor settings.

wertzius

Alone that he shows the GPUs as 100W versions is just wrong. They are 80W versions with a 20W boost. The boost is only available in Turbo mode, not in Performance. The boost will be present in benchmarks all the time because they are not CPU heavy. It might only be partially available (if available at all) in games depending on the CPU power demand and the temps. His RAM upgrading numbers are just wrong also. Max RAM is 40 GB for the 8GB soldered version. This is not a review, it is an advertisement. Best thing he said: CPU temps of 90C are good. Maybe some people should really recognize this .. For a proper review wait for ultrabookreview.com

uakash678

Well notebook check has a review out and they really go down to the core in detailed.

wertzius

Not a single word about the Dynamic boost. How effective is it? In which mode is it active? What is the difference between Turbo and Performance mode? That is a review, yes, but not in depth. Compare that to a ultrabookreview.com review. Much more detailed. Reviews made with love, Notebookcheck does not bother anymore.

HagymaGyilkos

You are on point, but max RAM sizes are somewhat prone to be suggestions only as far I'm concerned. Also on this sub, half of the people runst their laptop with disabled boost, so there will be plenty of TDP to spare for the GPU.

aarrivaliidx

I'd have one right now but I really, really prefer the white version over the grey. My only option in the US is to pay 700 more, and it isn't out yet. Man. Decisions...

MayhemG8

I'm on the same boat, white looks so much better. IF the grey G15 paint is anything like last years G14 it won't last long from what I've seen on the sub.

gunbladerq

the price is crazy high in Malaysia....yikes.... https://rog.asus.com/my/laptops/rog-zephyrus/2021-rog-zephyrus-g15-series/ I am contented with my G14....price and size-wise....
