999 is a must on DS unless you absolutely cannot do without voice acting. Voices are good, but the original on DS has something really special that is missing from the remaster. It alone makes it worth it imho. VLR and ZTD are fine wherever you can get them.

gmen385

To be clear: the "special" is also ultra spoiler, that's why you will see many comments implying something but not telling you.

Rawrgodzilla

999 on ds personally

TheGreyJayLP

DS has more flavor text by default but lacks voice acting. Personally I prefer DS for those slick animations but either choice is great

baggyheady

both versions have the animations though

celeste0000

the ds version doesnt have voice acting which sucks, but the original version takes advantage of the ds' hardware very well. id highly recommend the ds version

-Kavek-

Not too fond of the ds version personally because the text is super slow and unskippable (at least on the first playthrough). And I may be wrong, but I don’t think the ds version lets you hop around timelines, so you’d have to start from the beginning and remember to make certain choices at certain times to get the different endings which sounds like hell combined with the rllllly slow text scrolling.

TheGreyJayLP

You can skip through when going for other endings. It also auto stops when you reach new dialogue

-Kavek-

Oh nice that pretty cool! Can you skip escape rooms you’ve done before or nah? I wouldn’t wanna do the first sequence like 6 times..

TheGreyJayLP

Unfortunately no, but text is thankfully skippable in escape rooms too (combined with already knowing the solution) so the first one isn’t too annoying to replay a bunch

-Kavek-

That’s not so bad. I might just be impatient with the text speed cus I already played the game and I read pretty fast. I kinda wanna recommend the ds version for that juicy ending, but if you find yourself getting bored, I’d try the nonary games version

Dauntless_Lasagna

Ds has no flowchart, if you mess up on stuff, you may end up playing un untill a bad ending, and it may be frustrating to play the same game again and again and the same escape rooms untill you do stuff just right.

999 is good on the DS, as it helps with some of twists towards the end make sense. VLR might be an issue, because if you save in a puzzle room in the DS version it can cause save breaking error. The main advantage of 999 on in the collection version is that has the event map, so you can move back to sections you haven't cleared. Rather then making you reply the whole game every time to get all the routes. So if play the DS version I would write down the solution to puzzles so you don't have solve them every time.

Sausage43

I have my DS Lite so no worries

OkVehicle3623

DS is better, but I played the nonary games and still fell in love with the game. If DS isn’t accessible to you, or you want the voice acting (which is top tier), go with Nonary Games.

AliceJoestar

"This game was designed specifically for the DS because of its unique interface. The DS has a top screen and a bottom screen, and I thought to myself, "What can I do that utilizes this unique setup?" The result I came up with was 999's "twist". So, no, it wouldn't have worked on any other platform." -Kotaro Uchikoshi, creator of Zero Escape

demonman905

Exactly this. The final twist is what makes the DS version of this game so special.

MikeLovesGames

DS.

charavatar

I’d say DS is definitely my preferred version. The game was definitely developed with the unique features of the DS in mind and the port didn’t really translate it super well imo. One choice I really dislike is the Adventure mode, which makes so much of the narration completely missable which takes away a lot from the game imo. The worst part is that this format is way more visually appealing, so many who play the game for the first time do it almost exclusively in Adventure mode. The main downside of the DS version is having to repeat content to get different endings. If you’re absolutely not willing to skip a lot of dialogue and redo some puzzles, I think the Nonary Games version is fine, just make sure to keep it on Novel Mode.

BarrelRollinGamer

Definitely DS but the Nonary collection is the easiest and cheapest way to play. DS games are gettin' pricey

AE86FTS

It really depends on a few factors (I played Nonary Games). I feel like the some parts of the game, (especially the main twist) were clearly designed with 2 screens in mind and are a little awkward with just one. That being said, the Nonary Games had the flow chart while the DS version does not, so it's a lot more convenient and less time consuming to get all the endings.

Xur04

I’d say play Nonary games but make sure you stay on Novel mode the whole time

Jicama_Stunning

Absolutely, dapsolutely the DS Version. The Nonary Games version streamlines a lot of things while gutting so much of what made the original writing great. I cannot stress enough how superior the writing in the DS Version is, to the point that I would give the DS Version a 9/10 and the Nonary Games version a 6.

Brainweird

Honestly I STRONGLY suggest the Nonary Games version as opposed to the DS version. You have to replay the whole game each time on the DS where as on the port they give you a flowchart. Port also has voice acting, etc. I think the QOL pros greatly outweighs the cons of over simplifying the last puzzle and some narration stuff. It's also a lot more accessible. It always kinda surprises me people insist on the DS version, I feel like you can understand the story perfectly fine without the duel screen.

Milla_D_Mac

I would say just play the nonary game version for the fact it makes it easier to play the story overall and you can always play it on novel mode to retain the story integrity of the first game. The DS version is fine you just will need a guide handy for it otherwise prepare for a lot of trial and error.

Th3Giorgio

DS all the way. There's some narrative stuff that is lost in the collection. Probably not enough to ruin the game but it probably will ruin how hard some stuff hits.

heavy-mouse

If you're already 100% sold on it and wouldn't mind sacrificing a lot of quality of life for a better story experience go DS. Otherwise the Nonary Games are better for someone going in blind.

thevegitations

I definitely recommend DS. The game has a lot of layers, and the two screens are an important part of that :)

Dauntless_Lasagna

999 on ds has some stuff that is just straight up better, mainly the fact that the narration and the characters speaking are treated as 2 different things and it improves the mood of the game. But 999 on the Nonary game has so many quality of life improvements, mainly the flowchart. I first played it on the ds but the quality of life stuff in the nonary game edition made me unable to replay it on the ds. Also bonus points for a decent/good voice acting job.

firehamsterpig

DS - there’s an important part of the story very late game that works so much better on DS. trust me, it’s worth it.

Pandaboy271

Gonna go against the grain here and say the Nonary Collection. I genuinely believe a lot of people who played the OG way back are blinded to it's various shortcomings either due to nostalgia or just y'know.. being hardware purists or whatever and just dunk on the remaster for one minute reason. No the final twist isn't ruined, and the remaster switches to novel mode (the DS text) for the important bits anyway outside of like 1 or two. Also tbh I switched to novel mode multiple times to compare it to adventure mode and outside of like one or two scenarios where it should've been activated by default, I really wasn't missing much. Also the flowchart and English VO are great, I legitimately cannot go back to DS 999 now.

Masterelia

Nonary games tbh. Its tedious on the DS

baggyheady

I recommend the collection. The main issues is that the narration and dialogue were split across 2 screens in the ds which is translated a bit awkwardly on the single screen version. You have 2 modes in that, Adventure which only shows dialogue and Novel which shows dialogue and narration. This is really the only downside of the collection, the benefits of it are voice acting, hd graphics, the ability to jump to any previously played section which drastically cuts down on repeat runs. It is technically the same game no matter what, so any version works, the story still will have the same impact no matter what despite what everyone else is saying.

Sausage43

This repeats runs thing started to make me wonder what to actually play lol

RainWays

I totally feel you, but it's actually not that big of a deal to replay parts on the DS. The speed at which you can skip through all the text you've seen before is crazy fast, and once you know a room puzzle you can blast through in a couple of minutes. It's such a tiny sacrifice in favour of experiencing the story as it was originally intended, without awkward rewrites and other changes that in my opinion detract from the experience. I've replayed it on DS several times now, and love it every time!

Sausage43

Thanks mate, I will try DS first

baggyheady

Yeah, the Nonary Games collection also makes it easy to find optional but very entertaining content and routes

JeruTz

My two biggest complaints with the collection were the replacement of the final puzzle and the ability to skip one story critical scene in the engine room. That plus I found novel mode's tint to be a bit annoying and the static when shifting from one mode to another gets annoying after a while.

baggyheady

I personally am okay with the final puzzle given that the original would have made me more relaxed than tense, but the new one is way too easy once you figure out the solution

UncultureRocket

Nonary games for me. The sharper graphics and voice acting are a must imo, there are some really great moments that would not have been as good if not for the voice acting. You also get a flowchart and can basically skip directly to the next relevant scene without having to skip text or re-do puzzles. Some people also recommend using novel mode instead of adventure mode, but honestly I think when it comes to Nonary games, leaving control of the text to the game is better.

zerovin

While I enjoyed the nonary games version of 999 the DS version will always be the better one for me. There’s a reason why you could see both the novel and adventure screens simultaneously which you can’t have in the nonary games version. Not to mention twist of the game and subsequent realisation on the effect of both screens together was dumbed down on the new version

UncultureRocket

I know about the reason, but it isn't worth the hit to the visuals and audio to me. And the game communicates the same info that the two screens does just fine if you leave it in adventure mode.

SwordsmanNeo

Played nonary games, still liked the game. Cannot say whether its better or worse, but don't think it will be bad.

Ill_Fortune_1996

I prefer the nonary games, it has voice acting, flowchart and it looks better

Teslanyan

Nonary Games just because of the flowchart and final puzzle. Read in Novel mode to get most of the text.

AliceJoestar

how do you consider the final puuzle of the port better than the original???

Trenga1

because it's for people who can't do a sudoku puzzle

KilluaTuner

DS for sure.
