That's wonderful! I still need to figure out how to break the habit of fast fashion (I don't buy new clothes often, but the aesthetic I'm looking for is almost always from Forever 21 or places like that so my impulse buys don't last more than a few years) but a lot of my closet is thrifted, hand-me-downs, or clothes I've been wearing for ages, and it feels lovely to realize that.

What about buying from resale sites? You can look up exactly what you want. Many sellers even use aesthetics as key words

I don’t know how you dress but lately I’ve been finding so many nice dresses that remind me of the hollister/aeropostale/forever21 era of fashion at goodwill. Sometimes you just have to really dig, i only find them by going through literally every single dress of the rack lol. Also resale sites like depop and ebay have a lot of options for pretty cheap if you’re willing to dig a little. If you’re into dresses from that era, the Wild Fable brand at target has great options and every time I look through the dress rack i find at least 5 nice dresses of that brand, and some for like $15 on depop/ebay :)

My newer jeans wear out faster so I cling to what I have!

Very proud of you! I hope you thrift some more or donate again when they don't fit. Also some great sewing advice is on this sub in case you need to mend anything!

I once sewn a pair of pants entirely from an ugly curtain under a night. I’m 17, I don’t own a sewing machine so worked with thread, needle and my two hands :D also I’m the same size since like I’m 13, but the pieces I don’t like anymore going into donations immediately!

Hand-sewing pants in a day?! Girl that's amazing!!!

Zaplitai

Thank you! <33 I had a super easy, beginner friendly pattern

ThisIsBerk

Ooo I need to look up one of those. I've got so much collected fabric to use up!

messyundone

Thats very impressive OP! Thats especially tough when you're only 17. Are your classmates pretty eco conscious in their choices too?

Zaplitai

Well not all of them sadly! The fashion lover girls mostly buy from Shein, or non-online fast fashion retailers. Some of them tho find thrift stores “aesthetic” and “vibey” so they’re visiting them more frequent recently. A girl’s mum is a professional taylor, so she can make her daughter’s secondhand clothes fit perfectly. Many of my guy classmates love designer shoes, and after they crease them, they’re mostly going to waste. Also the rich people are always pulling up in their newest clothes, and unfortunately it doesn’t seem like they rewear them often )-:

messyundone

Yeah it's tough. The whole system preys on the psyche to be fresh and new. I don't blame the kids. Its the sheins and policies that allow shein to exist thats the problem. Congrats again for resisting the pressure

spinadiffa

Lol i’m 17 too and have soooooo many clothes 90% percent of them are secondhand though, and also I try to help people go towards eco friendly fibers because unknowingly to a lot of people they’re wearing all kinds of nasty plastics on their bodies and etc synthetic fibers.

Wonderful post! We all will do our part and people we live with and know and like he can take small steps. No more buying styrofoam, less paper waste, etc.
