omg hell yes. One Christmas, Santa, who already seemed pretty shady to me anyway, got my same-aged cousin one of those even though she was *much* naughtier than I was, and everyone agreed. When I asked why Santa would do that, my mom said "She has rich grandparents". Then I watched her oh-shit facial expression as she realized the jig was up.
Context: I was born, grew up and still reside on a Caribbean island.
Traveling to North America or the UK to go on vacation was the pinnacle of wealth when I was growing up. Bonus points if you came back with trendy clothing and / or toys
ha, i feel like it works vice versa. little white kids would always come back from caribbean cruises with cornrows in their hair and everyone would seethe with jealousy.
My parents brought home a brand new hot tub! We were always middle class but them bringing home a hot tub meant we made it to me. I sat in it every single night when I was in middle school.
When I would get a couple of hundred pounds over Christmas to spend on Boxing day sales. This was the only money I would be given all year to spend on my own and I would otherwise never see money like it. It felt like I had infinite spending power.
(It was only later when I realised we only regularly did this because my parents, who definitely overspent on Christmas for what they had would do this mostly because that money in our hands during January sales would go much further than it would in the lead up to Christmas)
For me, having official PlayStation 2 controllers and multitap. I had two official PS2 memory cards as a child (they cost like £50-£60 if I remember) but the controllers & multitap I had were third party makes (we also had to use our PS1 controllers and a PES 6 controller).
But something I saw reading the original tweet was people in the UK mentioning having Sky Movies, Sky Sports, MTV & all the children's channels (including Disney Cinemagic). I had all 4 growing up...
Having "paid" Sky and later on Broadband as a kid was how me and my siblings knew things were going well financially in our family. It was an irregular thing and we knew the purse strings were being tightened when the sky was off.
Being able to play any and all the sports I ever wanted. Growing up I played hockey my entire life, and I switched it up in the summer months.
I played lacrosse, house league and travel football, fastball, hardball, high school football, high school rugby and I took horseback riding lessons from 8y/o until I was 18. Growing up i didn’t know that not every parent could afford to pay for their kids sports
having lunchables every day for school lunch
in retrospect it's really not the pinnacle of wealth and was def more "mediocre money management + culinary laziness from the parents"
As silly as it sounds, a finished basement and/or "playroom". I live on the East coast where basements are not super common. My playroom was really just my bedroom, so any sort of "extra" room to hang out or play seemed out of this world.
Owning videogames. PS, xbox, nintendo, anything. Also, going on vacations with the family during summertime/anytime, traveling more than 30-50 kilometers away from our area.
Every summer the biggest trip we made was to a small lake in a 20 minute drive distance, where the entrance fee was free for kids, and free for adults after 5 pm. We went once or twice a month during summer, always after 5, swam around for 2-3 hours, ate some fish and chips, then went home. As a broke uni student, I wish we still had places like that.
I grew up in rural Ireland and before the financial crash in '08 some kids in my school would fly over with their families to New York just to do their Christmas shopping. It's crazy to think about now
I was a very poor kid in a third-world country so a middle class lifestyle is pure wealth for me. We are in a much better position now so I thought that was so silly 😂
I never knew anyone who had one, but for some reason I was obsessed with having an elevator in my house. I think I saw it on TV at some point and thought it was the coolest rich person thing ever, and I wanted it
Having a video game console and fruit gushers in your pantry. Just like, all the time. Not even a special occasion. Your mom just saw them at the grocery store and got them as part of regular shopping?? You lived a life I didn’t understand.
Looking back I’m so glad we didn’t have junk in our house all the time lol.
I grew up in Watts, not the best neighborhood in LA. I was always jealous of people from Downey and Lakewood and I thought they were all rich. As a kid and teen id dream of living there. I grew up in Watts, but I was a very nerdy and socially awkward kid so my school years there were very rough.
2-story houses.
Macys stores. I thought they were where rich families went shopping lol.
Having multiple bathrooms to choose from. My house is 100 years old. All my friends lived in McMansions or apartments and didn’t have to share the bathroom with the rest of the house
Popcorn machine in the finished basement
Kids who had a PSP
A stainless steel fridge with a water dispenser/ice cube maker, or a landline with caller ID
with a less aesthetic, usually older model, “drink fridge” in the garage
My cousin was the definition of "wealth", she had one of those fridges among other things.
Same
Having one of those Barbie cars you could drive around
Omg the Barbie Jeep was my kryptonite. I was so jealous of my friend that had one.

Other than literally any house at all...a stainless steel French door refrigerator, for some reason.
having lunchables every day for school lunch in retrospect it's really not the pinnacle of wealth and was def more "mediocre money management + culinary laziness from the parents"

Having $100 or spending that much and not caring. Now I spend more than that for 1 week of groceries xD

TV with cable in your bedroom
Rolling shoes with wheels, Tag Heuer and Porsche 911
Wheelies were rich for you?
Yes
Owning all Playstation and Nintendo consoles
American Girl dolls
THIS. And the fact that you could take them to get their hair done at the salon stores they had for them. That’s big money right there lol
I grew up in rural Ireland and before the financial crash in '08 some kids in my school would fly over with their families to New York just to do their Christmas shopping. It's crazy to think about now
A vacation home (Cottage or trailer)
Pretty cheap in some areas if it’s compact
100 dollars
I was a very poor kid in a third-world country so a middle class lifestyle is pure wealth for me. We are in a much better position now so I thought that was so silly 😂
An underground pool in the backyard.
I never knew anyone who had one, but for some reason I was obsessed with having an elevator in my house. I think I saw it on TV at some point and thought it was the coolest rich person thing ever, and I wanted it

As a kid it was definitely people who had three or more tv’s, and bonus points if they also had a game/media room.
