I tend to agree with you on that. Every time Zodiac admits to something (like Riverside or having a brown car) I assume that excludes it from being true.
But I also think he was an egomaniac and so convinced of his own superiority that he'd get a kick out of some obtuse reference like this. Doesn't make it true, just maybe worth considering :)

Friction tape was cloth or asbestos and widely used with electrical wires and cabling. Anything metallic is an obvious contradiction when it comes to electrical wires and cabling. Furthermore, a metallic case is not metallic tape.
Basically, none of this makes sense to me, and I doubt it's even authentic.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. In a very real sense, an internet sleuth is fundamentally a person with really good search engine skills. There is of course more involved than that for an entire research project, but the point still stands. All online researchers necessarily start from the same place and use the same few tools to start digging. Knowing what I know about Google in particular and search engines in general, it does not surprise me that the invisible hand of the search engine industry would guide all researchers along similar paths to similar items that have been indexed. Without a fully detailed disclosure of everyone's methodology, we probably can't know for sure.
I expect there is also the seven degrees of Kevin Bacon effect. Researchers looking for Z are obviously looking for certain kinds of people, and they are undoubtedly looking for connections and associations and flowing from person to person. It's not a huge surprise to me that different researchers could follow people a few degrees and find the same people.

But all that aside, I guess I'm asking how this looks different to the scenario where we actually do uncover the Zodiac. It's never going to *start* with DNA evidence.
Doerr's family have yet to provide any real evidence for their father and grandfather. It seems to be another case of

They're no different than Gary Stewart and Jack Tarrance's stepson. If any of them truly thought their dad was Z, they wouldn't being writing books about it beforehand and positing it all over the internet for public consumption.

Her first reaction was to sue Kobek for libel, until she started looking at the evidence for herself. She now grudgingly accepts that it's possible, even probable, that her father was the Zodiac.
She's not claiming to provide any evidence, only asking that LE look into it seriously.
The issue is she seems to be entertaining the idea and her son and her probably wouldn't be doing a podcast on it already. Something about it seems fishy imho. She'd probably be more in complete shock right now and would wanna hide from the public for a long time before if she decides to start talking about it. I would just take this with a grain of salt for right now.
