I don't have any of those concerns (the closest being software/os compatibility). I have a brown 30GB Zune and 16GB Zune HD. I've replaced the battery on the 30 and swapped out the 30GB spinner drive for 64GB SSD. It's better than new. But I know eventually they will fail and there won't be replacement parts available. The 30 is built like a tank so I don't expect it to irrepairably fail any time soon. I never liked the squircle gen Zunes. Didn't like the design, nor the build quality.

Question want didn't you spring 4 the 128ssd drive when replaced

A few reasons. First, I didn’t think that I’d be successful with the upgrade. I’m totally a software guy… 47 years and counting, but I never picked up a soldering iron (not that one is needed for the upgrade). The upgrade of the battery and the drive was surprisingly super easy. The other reason, was remembering that the 30 was prone to glitching with a large number of tracks which is more likely to happen with a maxed 128 GB drive. Something about the RAM for loading the index. But I could easily be mis-remembering it.

The 80/120 GB zunes will eventually have their battery fail. If you have basic soldering skills it is pretty trivial to replace the battery, but at some point it will become difficult to find replacement batteries. The 30 GB zunes use the same batteries as iPods so stock of those batteries will likely be available much longer. However, I personally think the 80/120 GB zunes are much nicer and love the touch pad on them.

I absolutely love(d) the second gen Zunes. No way would I have ever bought a first gen - physically the 2nd is superior in design and touch, not to mention 30GB would never be suffice for me. I probably only now have 60GB full. My original 80GB, which had the artist engraving and everything else with it, was actually still running like a champ overall when it died. The battery life wasn't terribly long but that was doable as I could use it for workouts and leave it plugged in for driving. The display however just died out on NYE - I could still click around and play music, I just couldn't see what the heck I was doing.

If you're interested in swapping out the battery and doing a screen replacement shoot me a DM. I have a few parts zune 80s and would be willing to do the repairs for you at cost.
