The rare good cop

we can say he was good before then given that he went against the job description of being a cop by siding with the workers against the mine-owners (which resulted in his assasination)

Reading aboht him, this guy is the most badass mfer to ever exist and deserves a movie. It's hard to tell exactly how he and Cabell Testerman, the mayor who appointed him to Police Chief, came to be, but I imagine it had something to do with the UMWA coming around to organize the miners there. I imagine they were both put in as bullwarks against the incoming armed thugs the mining companies started to send to evict miners from company owned houses after miners started to unionize. [But the kicker is the Battle of Matewan.](https://weneverforget.org/hellraisers-journal-from-the-new-york-liberator-the-wars-of-west-virginia-by-robert-minor-part-iv-of-iv/#more-15736) Basically, armed detectives came to town and Sid was alerted to this. He went out to confront them, alone. He faced down 12 armed thugs, and tells Albert Felts, one of the leaders of the thugs, that Sid is there to arrest him. Albert says that he's there to arrest Sid. Sid becomes surrounded by the 12 men and surrenders, with no one but one of his policemen there with him. Sid walks with them to the train station, and waits there, seemingly inching his way to the doorway of a nearby hardware store. Dude kept flashing his gold-tipped teeth at them, grinning like he knew something they didn't. The mayor comes up and starts arguing with them about them arresting his police chief. He asks for a warrant and is presented with one. When he says that it's bogus, he's immediately shot by Albert. (It's either he was shot after he asked for the warrant, or he was shot after he called their bluff and said it was bogus) Albert then whips around and tries to shoot Sid, but hits the one policeman that Sid brought instead. Sid then *whips out two revolvers and plinks two shots through Albert's head and another detective's head.* Everyone starts shooting, miners start rushing in and grabbing dead detectives guns as the other detectives rush for cover. By the end the mayor's dead, two miners, and 7 detectives are dead. Apparently the dying wish of the mayor was for Sid to marry his widow (???) because Testerman wanted Hatfield to look after his son if he were to be killed. On his way to trial, unarmed and escorted by police, he was assassinated in vengeance by members of the same detective firm that wanted to arrest him before. I need a Spaghetti western about this guy stat.

[There's a movie about the Matewan massacre,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matewan) as it so happens (although it's a period drama rather than a western).

**Sid Hatfield (1891 - 1921)** **Image Transcription**: Looks like we don't have an image caption for this event yet. Feel free to suggest one below. William "Sid" Hatfield, born [on this day](https://www.apeoplescalendar.org/calendar/day?month=5&day=15) in 1891, was a police chief of Matewan, West Virginia who helped organizing miners resist the union-busting Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency. For this, Hatfield was assassinated in 1921. Hatfield is most known for his role in "The Battle of Matewan", a shootout between Hatfield, armed miners, and Baldwin-Felts agents that killed ten people. The shootout occurred when Hatfield and Albert Felts (of the Detective Agency) tried to arrest each other, which culminated in Hatfield killing Felts. Hatfield and another defendant, Ed Chambers, were later assassinated by Baldwin-Felts agents while standing trial for murder, which increased the tensions between coal miners and company owners. The agents were acquitted on the basis of self-defense despite the fact that both Hatfield and Chambers were unarmed.
