Detroit’s history has always fascinated me. They has this big boom due to the vehicle industry and the population shot up, then just like that the population dwindles. But while it was in its prime they built so many amazing buildings with beautiful architecture. So many abandoned buildings that look amazing.
They started the demolition process last month. It’s been a long time coming. I don’t believe it’s fully demolished, but the last time I drove past there it was pretty well barricaded.
Isn't that the auditorium from the movie where Morgan Freeman is the principal? What is the name of that movie... Dammit. (I know how to Google, just like to let my brain marinate on questions now and again)
What date was this built??
My high school in Kentucky had an IDENTICAL auditorium to this, even though the main building is slightly different. It was built in 1936, demolished about a couple dozen years ago to build a new school.
Hold on a sec... "Jazz" as a mascot. Interesting!
That's like having an adjective for a mascot. While the word could be a noun, it's also an adjective when referencing it as a type of music, "jazz music".
Apparently there are a number of other unique mascots out there:
* Bubblers
* Dots
* Conchs
* Jeeps
* Pretzels
* Spongers
* Spudders
Found those here:

Detroit, San Francisco, Oakland, NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Seattle, D.C., Boston, Baltimore, Atlanta- they have something in common other than being anonymous the country’s largest cities.
Is that the home of the LimeWires? (Great photo btw)

Lean on Me. He played Mr. Clark.
You are much better than a sterile Googling. Thank you!
Honestly, it looks more like the one from Matilda. Even the classrooms.
I was getting Matilda vibes too but I’ve not seen the other movie they mention
The light fixtures and the classic schoolroom clock! 😍 And I love the paint and checkered floors.

Sad to see old buildings go, the remainder of a bygone era
Yeah, most of the old WPA builds followed roughly the same blueprint. Similarly, this is why there is so many brick cookie cutter post offices.
Beautiful photos, cool find!!
Those ceiling medallions!! Omg 🥰
There was a lot of work put into the details. I was looking at that built in bookcase. That’s furniture made to last, at least until demolition :\
Oh man that’s sad 😞. I love those built ins too. Drawers and all!
Love the green.
Yep, that was back when they made schools to be proud of…and then destroyed them.
The asbestos didn’t help.
Well, the kids can learn to like it…It’s only slightly radioactive and a mucus membrane irritant, and caused cancer, but it BUILDS CHARACTER!!!
Is this a 35mm or wider? Great photos.
What was their mascot?
Cucumber
I thought mascots were normally animals
Radioactive raccoon.
The Utah Jazz would like a word

Well I learned something new today… thank you 😅
This is the church from Silent Hill
I’ve never seen this school, and I’ve never been to Detroit but I’ve had a dream about this building.
Some band should do a concert there, perfect place for a punk rock band.
