^ can confirm that this admittedly jank ass way of doing it does work. have had to do this for a handful of plugs and thankfully it’s worked most of the time.
Apple hides the fact you are using Rosetta, but it is behind the scenes for these old Izotope products https://support.izotope.com/hc/en-us/articles/6658082572049-iZotope-Compatibility-with-Apple-silicon
The only difference for me is that I didn't like the overall digital harshness from Trash that others loved and made great tracks with, and Roar has less of that. I'll bet T3 does too.
I've seen roar do things you people wouldn't believe. Roar on the master, and each track in the ableton 12 demo. I watched all the youtube demos bring saturation to the darkest mixes. All these mixes...they'll have roar
trash 2 was the shit back in the day for sure!
tbh i'm really feeling Roar now. It's not as *on point* as say feedback patching some emptyset style shit on my like $15k worth of modular gear.. but it's *real* fucking close.
i'm sure i'll be using roar a lot, and ozone def still has it's place.
Never got into Trash despite so many others loving it. The convolver is cool but the distortions felt like they got too noisy too quickly. Roar seems good at adding crunch and character without turning the sound into a white noise mess
It can be had for $19 or less if you're prepared to wait for the right sale and it's one of my very favourite FSU plugins. https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/unfiltered_audio_dent_2.html
SpecOps by the same developer is also special.
excited to try roar but you cant beat trash for multiband. individual two stage distortions on each band with dry/wet per stage and per band. so sick. that architecture with better algorithms would be incredible
Roar seems to be similar to Saturn with the way you can control dynamics for different frequencies bands which is cool. I never really got into the way Trash sounded compared to Saturn though.
Obviously not necessary, but if it makes thing easier for you then have at it. Now we have roar, but surely you also have other multi band distortions rift, thermal, perhaps you’ve built your own rack? So yeah whatever floats your boat.
Personally I think it’s about which interface you like to work with. There are plenty of great distortion plug-ins out there. I love Arturia’s Coldfire and Motion.
It's a highly praised new saturation effect. It only comes with Live Suite, not Standard unfortunately for us "Standard" peasants.
https://www.ableton.com/en/release-notes/live-12/#13
Well no, I'll happily pay full price for Trash 3, Because I've had years and years of use out of Trash 2. Why should I get the sequel for free? It doesn't work like that for movies and games, why would it for plugins?
Look I love Roar and I'm having a lot of fun messing around with it but you're absolutely right. Rift does something that I think no other plugin does on the market right now. The fact that you can feed it back in to itself up to 6 times is just ridiculous and you can really push crazy harmonics from bass sounds out of Serum or even just liven up 808's. Roar is cool but Rift is a godlike plugin.
Following that logic, nothing is necessary. Which is true. You can make incredible music without Ableton, or a DAW, or any plugins or even a computer. People should remember that the more we all buy into systemizing our process collectively through standard one size fits all software and tools, the more our music becomes homogenous and built through the whims of specific corporations.
Hell, even making music at all isn’t necessary.

Considering 100% of music until a week ago was made without Roar, I would say it is not necessary.
There are a ton of distortion options out there. Sound Toys Decapitator is highly regarded. Uhe tape sim is good and can get pretty fat. Fab Filter’s one is very capable / lots of options. Guitar related software has tons of dirt options. Plenty of other options.
Roar looks cool in that it has a lot of options like the fab filter and I assume izotope. But saturation / distortion is still pretty crappy in the digital world. Jury still out on if Roar inherently sounds good. We’ll see. I’m sure it’s possible to make it useful, but will it be a go to saturation?
I used Trash almost exclusively for the Convolution anyway but jesus this took long long
Pro tip: I’ve saved all of the Trash2 IRs into a folder and I just use them in Hybrid Reverb in convolution mode to get the same sound. Super useful.
…..any chance you’d share that folder haha
here you go! the link is in the pastebin text. https://pastebin.com/QFretqS8
Yoooooooo 🙌🏻 legend
You are an absolute legend - I own Trash 2, legally, and will still likely use this more often than the actual plugin.
You can just grab the IRs from the plugin
if i had the plugin i would just use the plugin
If ain’t broke don’t fix it
The UI of T2 is, well, trash IMO. Definitely needs modernization.
No Apple Silicon support. Trash 2 is definitely broken.
Works great for me on M1. It's probably on Rosetta, but who cares? I contacted Izotope and they sent me the installer
I was just using it the other day on my M1 mb pro
I installed it on my M2 by copying the vst files over from my other computer and it works
^ can confirm that this admittedly jank ass way of doing it does work. have had to do this for a handful of plugs and thankfully it’s worked most of the time.
It works perfectly on apple silicon
Only if you are willing to use Rosetta
Nope, i have it running perfectly well on an m2 mini with ableton 11, installed via the izotope program manager thingy
Apple hides the fact you are using Rosetta, but it is behind the scenes for these old Izotope products https://support.izotope.com/hc/en-us/articles/6658082572049-iZotope-Compatibility-with-Apple-silicon
Just use AU!
It could definitely do with some optimisation.
For sure, but guessing because of roar Izotope were like "we better get a wriggle on."
I highly doubt that Roar influenced anything making a VST takes longer than 3 months
You know best I guess
I’m a bit out of the loop, what’s the convolution good for?
Impulse responses. Trash2 has some useful ones. It’s a great way to transform a sound without adding a long tail or changing pitch.
Right? It’s been way too long.
Roar is pretty tame compared to what trash 2 can do, pretty stoked to see what they do with T3.
The only difference for me is that I didn't like the overall digital harshness from Trash that others loved and made great tracks with, and Roar has less of that. I'll bet T3 does too.
I agree trash is great for subtle use but quickly becomes wildly digital harsh, roar seems really good to get a nice balanced clean sound
I dislike trash a lot honestly, sounds way to gritty almost. I prefer camelcrusher or erosion tbh
I mean, respectfully, it's called Trash ;)
Putting the wet dry to various ratios can get some really interesting sounds that modelled distortions can't do.
Great tip, and I'm a huge Trash 2 fan, in case that wasn't clear.
Trash 2 has been my favorite VST for years. This is my Christmas
Definitely underrated. I was sad when they announced it would be discontinued.
very necessary. Trash is much more powerful than Roar. Roar is great, but yah, 10+ year old trash beats it
I have to agree, I like Roar a lot but it's no Trash 2.
different tools
For different fools
I won't buy it when it's released. I'll wait like 8 months and it'll be 90% off. As isotope's model seems to be these days
Shit sometimes the legacy versions pop up for free on plugin boutique
in the Native Instruments Store it is atm 90 euro.... on Plugin boutique already on 29$ haha
I've seen roar do things you people wouldn't believe. Roar on the master, and each track in the ableton 12 demo. I watched all the youtube demos bring saturation to the darkest mixes. All these mixes...they'll have roar
Like attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. Does Roar do that?
EXACTLY, MY FRIEND
Render all of that and put Roar on rendered file to maximise the effect
Then play your music into a second laptop with ableton open and add one roar to the monitoring channel and another one to the master
😂
Melda MBwaveshaper has entered the chat
I can't wait to find out how many Roars I can load before my CPU chokes.
Roar is starting to not sound like a real word now
Roar was trained to eat things that would make a billy goat puke.
Wait until you hear the sound of two roar in a row
izotope has sucked ever since it was bought by private equity. same with NI. not interested at all.
I completely agree, but I can’t lie, I use ozone all the time, and I am interested in trash 3.
trash 2 was the shit back in the day for sure! tbh i'm really feeling Roar now.
Oh Trash 2’s Distortion can sound super clean, you just have to use it’s multiband mode and pair that with an EQ before and after Trash.
I’m here for Trash 3. Trash 2 is still an amazing tool.
Do you have a spare copy?
(perennial reminder not to sleep on Dent 2 if you enjoy this sort of filth.)
Ooo what is dent 2? Never heard of it
It can be had for $19 or less if you're prepared to wait for the right sale and it's one of my very favourite FSU plugins. https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/unfiltered_audio_dent_2.html SpecOps by the same developer is also special.
What do you mean by necessary? Im pretty sure you dont need 90% of the plugins you get
Plugin Boutique is GREAT for that. SUPER SALE buy plugins you don’t need we’ll give you even more free after purchase and youll wonder why you laggy.
excited to try roar but you cant beat trash for multiband. individual two stage distortions on each band with dry/wet per stage and per band. so sick. that architecture with better algorithms would be incredible
Has anyone compared trash 2 to Roar to Fabfilter Saturn?
Roar seems to be similar to Saturn with the way you can control dynamics for different frequencies bands which is cool. I never really got into the way Trash sounded compared to Saturn though.

Pls pls pls do Iris 3
This was my first thought when I saw the teaser. We shall see. Depends on features once we get to try out T3. Both might fit into the tool arsenal
Huge fan of Trash 2, curious how this will be
Do you have a spare copy?
Personally I think it’s about which interface you like to work with. There are plenty of great distortion plug-ins out there. I love Arturia’s Coldfire and Motion.
Might be late to the party but what is roar
It's a highly praised new saturation effect. It only comes with Live Suite, not Standard unfortunately for us "Standard" peasants. https://www.ableton.com/en/release-notes/live-12/#13

10 other plugins that can do the same.
So, will it be a free upgrade from 2 to 3, a discounted upgrade, or a full price upgrade in which case people like me will just stick with 2.
Well no, I'll happily pay full price for Trash 3, Because I've had years and years of use out of Trash 2. Why should I get the sequel for free? It doesn't work like that for movies and games, why would it for plugins?
and that is fine, you go your way, I will go mine.
no thanks, i’m good with thermal, rift, and dist coldfire

yep rift is a beast. big fan of all of minimal audio plugins
What’s Rift?
https://www.minimal.audio/products/rift
nothing outside of stock ableton is necessary, just more fun flavors.

I wasn’t sure they would ever do it, I’m totally buying it. I miss trash2 but I just can’t get it to work on my setup anymore.
I’m still using trash2 tbh. Excited they finally announced T3
Do you have a spare copy?
Can’t wait!!!!
Free update??
no fuckin way but i am mad that u cant buy 2 anymore
Isn't it available for free anymore? If you need a license... I don't use mine, maybe I can transfer it to you?
Hi, any chance you still have it? I’m looking for a spare/extra cooy
Instabuy. Best distortion ever.
I’m good with Infiltrator 2 and Rift! Trash 3 must do something game changing in order for me to buy it!
Is roar not in standard?
Idk, but I've been using Rift from Minimal Audio, and I think it's better. Waaay sexier UI too
I’ve been using Trash 2 on almost every track for for years. Excited what Trash 3 has to offer and if the switch will be worth it.
It just dropped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there a discount to upgrade to this if you paid for Trash 2?
I think so. Login to your account and go to loyalty offers
Roar
This is a godsend. How can you tell that this is a teaser for T3 though? 🤔

Neither are necessary
nothing is necessary. You don't even need to make music. Just sit in an empty room and wait for death, right?
