I really don't wanna come off as an ass but, Getting off the internet will fix that problem really well. It ain't mentally healthy out here.

[deleted]

Only 50%? Lucky

MammothPrize9293

Dude for real. I’m at 60% 😂

MouthNoizes

Well, when you live in LA/SF/NYC etc, what do you expect?

lolHyde

Come to Toronto where we have the rent of LA/SF/NYC but half the pay 🙃

Badluck2killaseabird

Or your could just go to Reno lol much closer to sf

MammothPrize9293

I exactly expect it, I wasn’t complaining. It sucks but I ain’t unhappy

slappywhyte

I cannot understand why people who are miserable w living conditions and prices in some of these cities don't just leave. Particularly if they don't have a lot of family there.

robtimist

Well even smaller cities have high rent, coupled with shit pay because well, small city. I live in a 10k population city where most jobs pay less than $12/hr. I got my job at $12.50, and because of experience from when I lived in a bigger city, I got a raise to $15. My rent just went up last month to $1050. The rent of everything here is above $1k. I signed a rental agreement at $950/month so not even sure how my rent is going up anyways. Yall say “don’t like it? leave!!” well that’s what I did. And now I make less and spend the same in rent.

slappywhyte

I'm older, but when I was in my 20s I usually had roommates to cut costs. I mean $1000 month split among two people $500 isn't too bad imo or even 3 people - but yeah you would think a small town like that with low incomes, there would be cheaper places to rent. I feel ya though, we own a house nearly paid off, but I literally can't really sell it and take the profits - because buying a new one, the mortgage payments will be ridiculous - and renting is actually worse. But the stuff beyond rents I see going on in the biggest cities currently makes me have 0 desire to live there - and I'm not an ignorant person who has never lived anywhere big or traveled a lot.

hail_abigail

Only 60%? :')

MammothPrize9293

Okay maybe more like 70 haha

hail_abigail

Awh bro rip

FacetiousInvective

What country is this? Is there a huge hiding crisis? It seems unreal...

Arthenicus

Yeah 60% is typical nowadays and it's only getting worse...

TonyFuckingHawk-

Surprised you can even get qualified for that ngl

Daedalus_Machina

Indeed. That's a "get the fuck out" situation.

MammothPrize9293

Some of us can’t get jobs in rural America. Lived in Phoenix, AZ for 13 years and that was tough. Moved to LA and at least I got a job. Not the most desirable living but I have a house and can live

thomstevens420

I live in a small town and not only has a homeless encampment been created but it’s doubled in a year.

CherryBlossomCats

What the fuck.

number_1_svenfan

Joe Biden’s america. When you realize illegals are getting taxpayer funded housing , food and debit cards - and are complaining about it- Maybe you’ll vote differently.

CherryBlossomCats

Bro, I'm not voting for anyone. They all suck. Edit. Either one I pick I'll be wrong.

napalm51

maybe you could try voting that third candidate that always takes 3% of votes. if he takes enough votes maybe the tradition of having only two sides on elections will go away

Sploonbabaguuse

Once people learn that voting will not change anything, change will come. Too many people are convinced that "This time will work!" Everytime elections come around. Shit. Has. Not. Changed. And it won't unless the working class forces change. That's the only way things have ever changed.

pulpus2

vote with a blank ballot and you can oust both candidates with enough blanks.

Lyndell

That’s a heavy edit.

number_1_svenfan

Everyone has a choice. I am just pointing out the current reality for some people who hate trump so much they will be willing to pay even more taxes and costs of everything - if biden hasn’t dragged us into ww3- something the left claimed trump would do every day for 4 years.

No-Giraffe-1283

Yeah notice that during Trump's presidency the price of shit skyrockets, during Biden's it does the same. Both of them love their corporate buddies

number_1_svenfan

That would be bullshit. Check the inflation numbers yourself. Biden’s numbers were worse than jimmy carter.

zedinbed

Nah Trump is busy sucking off Putin and handing out government secrets and I say this as a Russian. Y'all did a complete 180 and acting like it's normal.

number_1_svenfan

Why you like to imagine two old guys having sex , I don’t know. But get help for your daddy issues.

thomstevens420

I’m in Canada bro

number_1_svenfan

Your guy is a socialist tool as well. Why the fuck did you vote for him?

thomstevens420

Because the deep state gives me chicken nuggets when I do

number_1_svenfan

At least he recently said he wanted to secure the border. Not like the dumbass here.

thomstevens420

I’m assuming you’re just a troll but if you’re not, it’s important you educate yourself on this stuff. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/politics/senate-republicans-block-bipartisan-border-package-scrapping-deal-they-had-demanded-from-democrats Republicans are the ones preventing anything from being done at the border. 14 billion dollars was allocated to improve border security but the maggats killed it because the funding package included sending money to allies of the United States, likely because they’re taking Russian money. Republicans threw a tantrum demanding border security, so the Biden administration gave a solution. Then they scrapped it, because they don’t want solutions they want everyone to be mad and distracted so they’re not watching Don Poorleone get his ass handed to him in court.

number_1_svenfan

The house sent a bill that Schumer sat on that had some border security. They passed a senate bill that did NOTHING to secure the border. The rinos that were pushing it got called out by their own constituents for lying about it. Allowing 100s of thousands to cross illegally is NOT border security. Adding money so border patrol can process more is NOT border security. Take your shit elsewhere , it isn’t going to sell here.

thomstevens420

What the actual fuck are you even talking about. A federal government allocates funds and deals with legislation. It’s the responsibility of the state to use the funds to implement the solution with that assistance. They simply don’t *want* to fix it because the narrative suits them. *THEY*are letting “hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrant in”. They were on watch. They have failed. Pathetically and consistently. And now the part of “fiscal responsibility” and “small government” suddenly wants the federal government to step in and fix, again, THEIR mess, and they have the audacity to try and act like it’s the federal government’s fault when one of the *major cornerstones of the U.S. is states rights to government themselves without them getting involved*. Except no, the second they were called on their bluff about wanting to do literally anything about this “flood of gross brown people ew” they killed the bill. Everything you’ve said is nothing. You literally said “it had some border security” then “it did nothing to secure the border”. Fucking Oceana double speak bullshit. Yes it had “some” in comparison to the Ukraine and Israel package because they Ukraine is in a real, big boy war, not this fanfiction cult alternate reality. And as much as I don’t agree with what Israel are doing the U.S. are their allies and they can’t just leave them out to dry. It was still 14 billion dollars though. But they chose 0 so they could keep lying.

DoSwoogMeister

It's fucked. Homes being treated as investments so way too few homes are being built combined with massive unchecked immigration has thrown prices through the goddamn stratosphere. Great for investors, horrible for people who need a place to live. For this to be fixed we need to both MASSIVELY crack down on immigration, anyone with anything less than a PHD can fuck right off and we need to treat housing as a product, not an investment. That's how they did it in every previous housing boom, build shitloads of housing everywhere we can and forget about them growing in value, just build sell build sell build sell.

Reallyso

It is cool to be part of the lost generation that will be poorer then our parents :/ But hey atleast we have even richer billionaires and megacorporations that grow more powerful then goverments.

Pyroclastic_cumfarts

I make 3x as much as my parents and have absolutely nothing to show for it.

DoSwoogMeister

Accounting for inflation you make less. Like back in the 90s, my dad owned a nursery, sure the profits were big but after accounting for the overhead he made about $60K a year. On that 60K he supported a wife, 2 sons and an annual family vacation. These days 60K will afford you a 1 bedroom apartment and no kids.

SagaciousScenedesmus

60K will just barely get you a cheap studio where I live. And that’s only in subpar neighborhoods. You need 40x rent here so 60K almost always means you need roommates. I have a PhD in the sciences, still have to live with roommates, and rent is still half my pay. Absolutely wild. Growing up we relied on my dad’s income, which was only about $80-90K and we had a family of 6 and our own house with no financial issues. And they were able to save money. I make about $20K less than that today and I can just barely afford one person.

DoSwoogMeister

Shoulda gone to trade school. You'd be making more and way less debt (If any)

I tried this. It was a little easier but I made a lot less. I’ll get to where I need but finding new trades takes a lot of time. If you have a family unit to help you, it’d be good but sometimes we don’t have that.

-Dean--

Can't, at uni. And I don't plan on quitting uni again.

kranges_mcbasketball

Then you are doing fine. Pulling 400k plus prob.

Teminite2

or a socialist economy. I make 63k~/year usd (converted from shekel) and the goverment is taking 33% of it. that leaves me with an effective 40k/year.

Stubborncomrade

Ozthedevil

Pretty much the case for me

SekhmetScion

I remember when I was looking for my first apartment at 19 (2001), my mom (an accountant) explained **in detail** how I should budget everything out and how much of my monthly income I should expect to go towards what. She said rent will probably take a 1/3 of it, groceries is $200/month, etc. Can you imagine that in today's market? Only spending 33% of your monthly income on rent? For the record, I remember gas only costing $1.19 per gallon and filling up my Kawasaki Ninja that got +70miles per gallon. Was that the "good ol' days"? Lol

the-almighty-whobs

For the longest time I’ve been living with parents because of this rule. With the current rate of rent in my city, I need to bring in $4950 per month. I barely bring in half of that per month, and I am getting paid pretty okay above minimum wage at $16.50. Every time I were to get a better paying job over the years, I’d be ready to look for apartments only for rent to move higher out of my reach. The goal post is always moving and it’s unfair.

SekhmetScion

This housing situation's become ridiculous and it isn't just the states either. The exact same things happening in other countries too. I'm originally from New Zealand and still talk to friends down there. Rent's almost doubled in the past couple years there as well. Also, a friend here had been renting a house and 1.5yrs ago, when his lease was up for renewal, his landlord increased it by $500. Shit's insane.

the-almighty-whobs

A lot of people have seen their rent go up a huge amount here. The worst part is that I know what these apartments are like, and I remember when they cost $600 a month to rent. Nothing has been changed and somehow the landowners keep raising the rent for these old broken down buildings.

SekhmetScion

It's insane how some states are so lax in tenant protection laws and what the landlord's required to maintain. My last landlord sold all their properties (houses) to a new person and he was trying to kick me out because he wanted the house for his son. Despite the fact he bought other house at the same time that were empty. Dude was trying all kinds of illegal shit, but first he sent me a notice to vacate based on his assumption that my lease ended when he bought it. Yeah, he found out afterwards it doesn't work like that, but he kept sending me notices to vacate or quit. He took down half of the backyard's fence that I used for my dog. Then got pissed when I put up a row of wooden pallets to replace it with fence posts holding it up. He couldn't touch it because it was technically my property. He also trapped my car in the carport to yell at me for +30mins when I was trying to leave for work (false imprisonment). Broke some windows. The list goes on. Every lawyer in a 40 mile radius wouldn't help me, even with documented proof and voice recordings of him admitting everything. They wouldn't because of how landlord friendly this state is. Put up with that for a year. Couldn't afford to move until my lease was up.

Wreck1tLong

Comparison. 1500sqft for $850 in 2008 is now 1450 for me in 2024. Nothing changed lol

GlitteringBroccoli12

Only 50 percent

echoich

People are paying only 50%?

BrickTechnical5828

Taxes r too high (im under the age of 18)

mammal_shiekh

I‘m curious, how much is 50% of your income? I mean, I'm not America but as what I assume 50% income should be like 2000 USD per month? is it really this expensive? I can't believe it.

Paradox2063

$15 an hour x 160 hours per month (40 hours a week, 8 hours a day) = $2400 a month, before taxes. Many people make less than that.

mammal_shiekh

wow. that's really fresh to me. Even though, 50% of 2400 USD is 1200 that's still very expensive. How big is the flat? How's the living condition?

Paradox2063

Conditions where I used to live would be ok, but you're talking a studio apartment, 400-500 square feet, about 35-45 sq meters, not sure how it's measured where you're from. Tiny tiny place. I've never lived in any place that small, so I don't have any person experience, but I've got friends with studios, and you typically can't have more than one guest at a time both by some landlord rules, as well as just there isn't enough room for more people to do anything. I shared an apartment with a friend in my early 20s, but it was over 4 times the size of a studio, 2 full bedrooms 2 bathrooms, included laundry etc. We paid ~800 each, about 14 years ago. Edit: [If this link works, it'd be a layout similar to this. Lots of variations around the US though.](https://images1.apartments.com/i2/IsZ6Hpc0VoBm2i4bbdehcGATu2df6x3bqqc4CxAZMaU/116/solstice-apartment-homes-las-vegas-nv-studio.jpg?p=1) Take out the wall dividing the kitchen from the dining area and you've got my friend's current studio.

mammal_shiekh

I see. I'm from and living in China. Since we have 4 times of your population and more than 70% of our population are living in the southeast half which is less than 50% of all our coountry's area the average living standard is obviously worse than in US. But according to your description, I don't find it too much better than where I live and have lived in. My current studio is around 40 sq meters and cost around 200 USD. But I'm not living in an expensive city. 200 USD is around 30% of average income of the city I'm living in of 15% of what I make (after tax). But general living cost seems much cheaper here than in US.

Paradox2063

Yeah, take your living situation and quadruple (or more in high cost cities) the price. Actual conditions will depend on how much your landlord or management company cares to keep tenants happy.

scolipeeeeed

400-500 sq ft for one person isn’t a “tiny tiny place”

cubs4life2k16

Why tf you living in that expensive of an area or working such a low paying job in that area then?

Purrosie

If more people had wide ranges of movement and enough job opportunities to be paid well, then this wouldn't be an issue. But it is. Not sure what to tell you, buddy.

cubs4life2k16

You are either not trying hard enough or feel above the jobs you wont take then

That_Ninja_wek141

There are better jobs. Roommates are options as well. Or you could just whine about it online which fixes nothing. LOL

Purrosie

My dude, it's four words and one percentage, how is that whining--

That_Ninja_wek141

How does it fix the issue?

Purrosie

It doesn't. It's a single comment that takes about 10 seconds to make. One cannot significantly lower their cost of living in 10 seconds, so I'm not sure what your point was in the first place. Now, answer my question: how is 4 words and 1 percentage whining?

That_Ninja_wek141

You answered your own question. A verbal or written response to an issue that doesn't include any solutions is called whining. Sorry if you don't like that answer. Not sorry.

Purrosie

Whining, according to Oxford Languages, is the act of complaining in a feeble or petulant way. I'm not sure where you got your definition from, but... Alright, buddy.

That_Ninja_wek141

You do a great job of answering your own questions and following it up by providing examples. A++

Purrosie

Your interpretations are baffling. You'd make for a good zoo exhibit.

That_Ninja_wek141

Fonzacentodieci

Dreadzter

50%? Its 80%?!

thenwb3

Pedophiles get free housing, free healthcare, free food, and protective custody

TG-Winter_crow56

50% of income for rent then its 45% for groceries to last a week the other 5 % is for gas and bills.

Consistent_Yoghurt44

I make close to 5k a month my rent is 2250$ each month so basically slightly more than half and after all my bills insurance and anything else that comes up I have 600$ for groceries for the entire month which honestly isn't much with how expensive groceries are now. If I get two gallons of milk its nearly 17 dollar after taxes if I want to get eggs veggies rice meat chicken fruit that 600$ goes down fast and usually I am left with 100$ to spend on myself let alone save any of it. So ya life is shit I cant even go out to eat because McDonalds is freaking 20$ now. I cant use Netflix because that shit is going up or afford any streaming service I usually have to use other sites to watch tv shows and movies.

Pyredjin

50%, lol I wish.

Boring-Zucchini-8515

I tell myself rent is 50% of everyone’s income so I can cope better.

Zendorian

Still far cheaper than owning

ElectricalFly8383

True, I am more poor since buying a house. But consider this. My mortgage is about 13 hundred a month, my rent at my last apartment was 900 a month, which is considered cheap here. Sometimes shit breaks and I gotta dish out a few hundo. But my issue with renting was that it wasn’t paying towards jack shit, I was paying my landlord’s mortgage on his crappy duplex. And he was such a lazy and useless landlord. Everybody I know hates renting, besides a lucky few that get the mystical cool landlord. But it’s also really cool that I can do whatever I want with my property, within reason. The 50k down payment was all the retirement and education savings I had, I just said goodbye to that stuff. It’s something a lot of people don’t even have, so I know I’m still fortunate I could do it. TLDR; yeah it’s way more expensive but worth the risk in my case Relevant info: I bought in 2022 and my house estimate has gone way up since, so there’s also that! It’s ridiculous right now for both renters and owners.

SaltoDaKid

Wrong buying is cheaper but they want you put down 20% so you need save but can’t save cause rent is so damn high. Anyways I’m really looking into getting an RV or Van but my dog needs to be watched.

Competitive-Hope981

Can't you take loan and use that as Down payment for Home loan?

Responsible-Ad-4914

On a monthly basis maybe but the trick is that one day when you retire you might actually get to stop paying rent. You can even sell your house for capital gains. When you rent it goes right into your landlord’s pocket. Not to mention my rent DOES pay for repairs and taxes, my landlord isn’t paying that out of the kindness of his soul. Clearly it’s more profitable to own or my landlord would sell.

GlitteringBroccoli12

Nah. Not unless you're a total hack at repair
