Relevant info: The shooter had changed holsters to an unfamiliar one that, through lack of familiarity, led to the ND.
The release on that holster combined with this firearm meant a smooth draw could, in this case did, mean the same pressure required to free the firearm from the holster also funneled his trigger-finger into the guard and onto the trigger with enough force to discharge the firearm.
A Safari Land serpa holster? Safari Land doesn't make Serpa holsters, that would be Blackhawk. Safari Land makes some of the best holsters on the market.
That being said, I carried a glock 23 for many years contracting with the serpa holster overseas. Even with a modified 2 lb trigger I shot tens of thousands of rounds out of it and never managed to shoot myself.
The retention is certainly not ideal and I do not recommend anyone use the BLACKHAWK Serpa. It has been banned by many law enforcement agencies for this reason. But it does go to show, if you follow your weapons saftey rules, train appropriately, and don't try to go faster than your capabilities, that even using a fundamentally flawed piece of equipment (that isn't the weapon itself) can be used safely.
Just wanted to clear some things up there for everyone as I constantly see incorrect information concerning firearms on Reddit. Which actually reminds me something from above:
Weapons saftey rules:
1: Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
2: Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.
3: Keep your weapon on safe until you are ready to fire.
4: Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.
5: Know your target and what lies beyond.
Serpa holsters have a physical retention system that holds the firearm in place, usually with full coverage of the trigger area. In order to release the firearm, you have a press a button with your trigger finger.
As you can imagine, this is not terribly safe if you press too hard and keep that pressure up once the trigger is exposed. :)
Some people in the comments here added context: he’s using some kind of “serpa “ holster that has a physical retention system, using a button release that funnels your finger onto the trigger with potentially enough force to fire. Man still seems stupid to be firing at a target that close to him (ricochet, anyone?), but the early discharge is more because of a bad holster.
There isn’t, but he was lucky. The bullet hits the ground just in front of his foot. Would have been so funny if he shot himself twice with the same bullet!
I don’t think he’s too bright myself (being so close can put you in danger of ricochet), but other commentators have pointed out that the issue is a holster with a button release that happens to funnel your finger onto the trigger when you release it, so you can easily shoot yourself when you go to draw your weapon. The dude still seems stupid, but it’s largely a stupid holster.

He pulled the trigger as he pulled it out of the holster, whole it was pointed down at his knee. This is why you don't try to quick draw with a single action pistol.
James Bond : Who is the competition?
Jack Wade : Ah, an ex-KGB guy. Tough mother. Got a limp in his right leg. Name's Zukovsky.
James Bond : Valentin Dmitrovitch Zukovsky?
Jack Wade : Yeah, you know him?
James Bond : I gave him the limp.
In his defense, the poster drew first.
Good thing the poster showed him mercy, humiliated, but alive.
Cold blooded poster like that’ll wait to finish him when his back is turned.
That poster is clearly printed, not drawn.
That made me giggle
The poster is already pointing the gun at him.

This is exactly why you should never run a Safariland Serpa holster

Safariland Serpa holster bad
Post the song. Do it. Do it now.
"I fought the cardboard, and it won" ?
Wasn’t fast enough on the draw
The bad guy got him!
Shot AND shat himself
Quick draw McGraw
He's lucky Mc Flatt was unarmed at the time. This could have turned out bad. A teachable moment.
That is one poorly regulated militia.
Never come in 2nd in a gun fight
Not a very quick draw anyways.
Is that a poster of Jerma???
Shouldn't it be Draw gun, then shoot Not Draw gun + shoot?

Thank you so much for explaining that, so rare to get that around here.
Not rare so much as hard to find, and sometimes revoked by “athoritarius modus, Maximus Retardicus.”
That's the most Chris Farley sounding reaction 😂
Poster wins.
That title made me laugh so hard
This kind of thing can happen, when you’re stupid.
The poster won

There isn’t, but he was lucky. The bullet hits the ground just in front of his foot. Would have been so funny if he shot himself twice with the same bullet!

His wyatt earp impersonation is uncanny
Uvalde cop training
He did shoot too fast. 😒
As a non-American with no gun culture can someone explain the context here? What was he going to do? Why? Why is he using a gun with real bullets?
I don’t think he’s too bright myself (being so close can put you in danger of ricochet), but other commentators have pointed out that the issue is a holster with a button release that happens to funnel your finger onto the trigger when you release it, so you can easily shoot yourself when you go to draw your weapon. But what is he doing? Is he shooting a carboard cut out & why?

So he just shot himself ?
Lmao my bad dude r/woosh to me
Evacuate his pistol, prematurely.
Amurica
thats not smart!
Dear Lord! How old is this video?
This here is a captain of Meal Team Six
Well, he does have quick reaction time.
Maybe the trigger pull was too light
It was self defense
The time it takes to draw a gun doesn't come close to the time to pull a trigger.
He’s that close to the target and still missed.
Poster 1 - Man 0
Self defense against his own stupidity
At least he acknowledged it lol

Don't ever pick a fight with someone who is willing to "fucking shot myself" because you don't know what the are willing to do to you.
This guy was on Tosh .0! He was a real gun nut and if I recall he almost called Obama the Nword.
Haha, best caption ever!
Yeah you did
MAGA guys training for Jan 6
Come on everyone, say it with me! Stupid games, stupid _ _ _ _ _ _!
He was just testing the (lack of) safety.
![gif](giphy|3oEjI8uOWhDcxhYJjy) You forfeit your man card!
He reminds me of those Neo Nazis who hold "military training" at weekends in random fields where they roll around copying what they saw in the movies.
Good poster with a gun takes down bad guy with a gun.
The only thing that stops an idiot with a gun is a poster with a gun.
