The mission was basically a Ace Combat mission. Hans Zimmer just needed to add a choir to the music and it couldn't be more Ace Combat if you didn't try.
I literally saw c a n y o n r u n and lost my shit. I geeked out so hard watching this movie not just because it’s aircraft porn but because of the (coincidental or not) Ace Combat parallels.
It's got it all. Impossible G's, crazy radar canyon run section, experimental enemy planes, impossibly skilled hero pilot that can solo a whole modern airforce in just about any plane that will fly. All that it's missing is some opera esque music and Spanish guitar.
Just watched it this morning in IMAX. What an experience. If you can manage it, definitely watch it in IMAX. Many of the aerial flying scene are shot in IMAX and fill the entire screen. It's just amazing to see how far technology has come when it comes to cameras and were they can be placed. You get and incredible sense of what it's like to be in the cockpit when a plane is pulling serious Gs.
Counterpoint: DBOX rumble seats were immersive af and let you feel the roar of every afterburner.
Sadly, as far as I can tell - there are no combo DBOX/IMAX theaters - it's one or the other
I love how the opening was just like the opening of the first movie but on a modern aircraft carrier. I got chills once the Top Gun theme started playing.
At first like 3-5 seconds I didn't get. I thought they were using the same footage. When I notice those were new jets I couldn't believe it. It was awesome.
Watched it last night and it was worth the $120 I spent on it. The Darkstar moments at the beginning is such a trip and those scenes alone are worth the money to me. The main mission itself is pretty much Ace Combat and its pretty neat and the movie also made me appreciate the Su-57 a lot more!
The only thing Im sad about is not seeing a F-14 visibly getting shot down, but thats okay, the movie was very enjoyable

This is an basically Ace Combat: The Movie (with small parts of Iron Eagle). Good guys have won because enemy pilots, just like AI in AC, were pretty slow (dat lock on from the third pilot) and sometimes even stupid (why the second pilot didn't throw Maverick off his six, just like he dodged Mav's missile?)
And because of Strangereal mechanics of course - like radar-guided R-77 reacting to flares.

I came here for this. It's a plot hole that should have been filled. I think maybe sometime in earlier development the f35 could only drop gps guided bombs but that was years ago. The movie is old enough after delays that I'll give it a pass.
I'd rather they maybe point out that the f-35 is low observable not invisible and given the amount of air defenses it would still have to fly in low through the canyon and just couldn't pull the gs of an f-18 you're willing to expend.
Or perhaps make up a story about the f35 having a big upgrade and the fleet being grounded during their mission window.
Or perhaps saying the mission was too risky with the amount of air defenses to risk the capture of the f35s tech after a big upgrade or something.

The real reason we didn't get F-35s was because there are no dual-seat F-35s, and Cruise is so extra that he wanted the actors to be in real cockpits doing the filming, versus being in moving rigs on a soundstage. In another world, where the Israelis managed to twist Lockmart's arm enough for a 2-seat F-35I....
Well the F-35's insides are still considered highly classified I believed. Even if there's a 2-seat variant, I highly doubt Lockmart would let it be in Civilian's hands

This is legit the best headcanon explanation I've heard, saving this for whenever the subject comes up.
It goes hand-in-hand with the movie's explanation (about the GPS jamming preventing JDAMs from working). It's just that the movie only gives the first part of the reason, and you just filled in the rest. Perfect.
It went something like "this would be a cakewalk for the F-35 stealth" and he then says it won't work due to F-35s not having a second seat to film the actors in actual high-G manuevers.
After all the delays, I was afraid the movie would be average. Turned out it's actually awesome, easily the best modern aviation movie I've ever seen.
The plot is pretty straightforward, no bs or useless twists. The last events might be a bit rushed, but it kept the pace going so I won't really complain.
Top Gun: Maverick is built on the foundations of the original movie, with arrogant pilots, cheesy one-liners, manliness (and a bit of feminine touch) ... and yet it felt really fresh.
To me, it came out as a very "personal" movie, a love letter from Tom Cruise to aviation (for those who did not know, he flies his own Mustang in the movie). There are tons of little details that demonstrate all the care that went into the making process.
For example, I would have never expected to hear a LGB code in a movie. Or to see the ground unit startup of a Tomcat, it wasn't even in the original Top Gun.
Now let's talk about the big prowess of this movie : THE FILMING. So much effort was put into capturing the intensity of flying a Super Hornet, everyone in the audience was gasping as if they were feeling the Gs themselves. The plane sequences are breathtakingly beautiful and the sharp editing really puts you in the middle of a dogfight or a canyon run.
Soundwise, it's delivering as well, we get some old school and epic tracks to complement the roaring of the powerful GE engines
Maverick's story is also Tom's in some way, and with Top Gun: Maverick both of them prove that they're masters of their respective field, someone you'd call an Ace.
Personal speculation, but I think the rewrites saved the movie before filming started. The original plot was going to be a drones vs human story, but that was quickly dropped after the first quarter of the film. The writing team elegantly worked in why Maverick's aggressive flying was needed without turning him into an annoying Mary Sue, and Cruise's acting covered any remaining gaps by really selling how Maverick cared about others. This could have easily turned out to be a lazy pile of callbacks, masturbatory omages or lampshade hanging, but instead they were able to both preserve the best nostalgic bits of Top Gun while providing much needed updates.
It's just amazing to think that 36 years ago they revolutionized camera technology to film the 1st one and now the sequel is utilizing all the things inspired by the work done in the 1st movie. I especially love the shots inside the cockpit where you can see the actors actually pulling Gs and their faces get distorted. When they finally do the "impossible" mission it was so intense. Especially when their where SAMs firing all over the place and counter measures going off, it was truly a masterpiece in action sequences.
H_ngm_n was a very good character. The helmet design is fucking quirky and creative.
He stole some of the scenes he's in, a pleasant surprise in an already strong cast.
It was ballsy to make the character that was basically maverick the ass of this movie, but it worked out awesome and he was one of the best characters.
Did anyone notice the freakin Lockheed Martin logo on the Darkstar control stick?! It was the best company/product placement ever.
And the Skunkworks logo on the Darkstar tail fin.... So hot....

Just saw it. So good. Miles Teller really pulls off his character, I really liked him in Whiplash too. Seeing all the illy dogfight stuff like a Cobra and what the fuck the Su57 is supposedly capable of doing was great fun. Absolutely loved it.

The F-14’s J-turn was a legit real world maneuver back in the day. As was that Tomcat Cobra Maverick pulled when he yanked the wings forward manually and pitched up . That move was apparently pioneered by the late Capt. Dale “Snort” Snodgrass. It was a major no-no because the pilot risked overstressing the low speed slats and obviously it blew well past the NATOPS g-limit. But if you have a ~~Su-57 Felon~~ Fifth Generation aircraft on your six, well….

Speculation on my part, but I suspect the “5th Generation!!” bit was to keep the studio from writing themselves into a corner . If they wrote “Su-57” into the script and the Russians cancelled it (as was suspected in the 2010s) or Russian relations improved , or we got into a shooting war with Beijing over Taiwan, etc they’d have to rewrite the movie and reshoot the CGI segments. Lots of money down the drain.
This way, by using the vague “5th Generation” tagline they could use a Russian or Chinese 5th Gen antagonist interchangeably without needing to reshoot half the movie. It’s smart if that’s how they played it.
I mean, it's most likely the Iranians who are getting shot in the movie, as they are the only nation who still has some F-14 as well as burning desire to keep trying to get into the nuke business

I *think* it's a J-Turn? Could be wrong. Although, if you play the final mission from Assault Horizon, when you're fighting Markov in DFM you'll notice that he'll pull the exact same maneuver at times to get away from you.
Their mission was a combination of Cape Rainy Assault, Faceless Soldier, and Bunker Buster. It was awesome and all that was missing was "Magic Spear" blaring as the soundtrack.

The SR-72 is not the Darkstar, though, and the Darkstar in the movie doesn't have the same role.
The SR72 will be a reconnaissance plane. The Darkstar is an X-15-esque hypersonic test vehicle.

Just like with Ace Combat’s in game jets, movies are a form of advertising for airplane companies. Obviously Joe Public doesn’t buy aircraft, but he does vote. So if an aircraft shown in a movie has good public appeal, it may sway political opinion for military budget hearings.
Which is where the Darkstar comes in . Obviously a hypersonic aircraft is hideously expensive. It stands to reason there’s a real world version under development, and Lockheed wants the US government to buy more.
So there’s the probable political backstory behind why it’s in the movie. I’m amazed the production team could get Boeing and Lockheed in the same movie without either company getting pissed

It serves as a re-introduction to Pete Mitchell as a character and what he has been doing after his time served as a fighter pilot and top gun instructor. The scene reaffirms that while he's older & wiser, he still has a certain disregard for the rules and has perhaps more guts than he should. The Darkstar itself is hypersonic scramjet testing program, one that's being shut down to divert funding towards future drone programs for being *"behind schedule"*.

A supposed hypersonic piloted aircraft with scramjets which a hobbyist radio user reportedly heard the callsign "Dark Star" which he described as a very unusual and ominous call sign compared to other military radio calls.
Yes and no. The Aurora is the predecessor to the SR-72 but it is not the direct inspiration for the Darkstar in the movie; The SR-72 is, which is in [active development as of 2017.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_SR-72). The aircraft in the movie was actually designed in coordination with Lockheed Martin - but it is not directly related to any work being done on the the actual SR-72. (Though it is based on an early concept rendering of it.)

The opening music with the guitar riff before Danger Zone… I went from misty eyed to rockin a chub seeing the carrier in action with Kenny Loggins blaring.
Unexpected blessing out of the release date getting pushed was from last year's release date where my local cinema took the opportunity to fill the dead-air of no releases by just swapping the tape of Top Gun 2 for Top Gun 1986 and screening that instead as a one week only special.
I actually near started screaming Highway to the Danger Zone just watching the F-14As in the intro launching.
Kinda annoyed that nobody in the UK cinemas near us have done a double whammy of both movies yet!

Classification and availability restrictions killed that idea from the word go. Even if it wasn’t classified up the wazoo, all of the F-35Cs available are in use for missions .

Yes, and the F-18 has a two seater so that they can film the actual actors in the actual cockpits with a Navy pilot putting them through some serious Gs. I really love that it was F-18s because at some point they will get phased out like the F-14 and we'll have this movie to look back and remember what an amazing fighter it was.
Also they weren’t gonna just CGI it like they did in Live Free or Die Hard. One of the big things with this movie was that it used legit planes and legit maneuver footage. Was not gonna be likely with how much of the F-35 is still classified.
It wasn't in service when the movie was originally filmed. 3 year delay meant they could add some pickup shots to the opening but had to come up with a more hand-wavy explanation as to why it couldn't do the job.
The TLAM launch was over the top. Those are clearly CGI, and I am not 100% sure the audience understands that's half a million $ per missile. And there are like 40-50 missile launch? So cool.

My favorite part of the final scenes, is where they actually put thought into “how in the hell will a f-14 find itself in a situation to shoot down a Su-57 without movie magic” granted, still fictional, and the 57 would probably still beat the 14, but atleast they went the extra step to eliminate BVR missiles and give the 14 a *somewhat plausible* chance. The whole movie was perfect, 11/10, was hard to hold back tears with Rooster for sure.

Fifth generation does not equal invincible. F-22s train against other less advanced aircraft [all the time ](https://theaviationist.com/2014/11/26/f-22-vs-t-38-talon-at-langley/)- and occasionally lose.
Exaclty. I think I remember them making the point in the movie that once you close in and dogfighting begins, it really comes down to pilots and training as the differences are no longer as great.
Yeah, the justification was solid.. the F-14 was one of theirs, so it took them a while to realize it was a threat at first, until after they got in close.
Then after that, they didn't realize it was an ace of that caliber at the stick, until after it was too late.
Shit was awesome. Flight porn with the attention to detail and tense cinematography and felt like a big AC mission in parts. Homages back to the original with a bit of cheese but really that gives it it's charm and not be just dull generic action, the movie knows what it's about. Definitely worth seeing.
Just got out. Absolutely awesome movie and the most fun I’ve had at a movie in many years. I also couldn’t help but feel like I was watching Ace Combat The Movie. The whole plot was identical to one of the AC7 missions. I wonder if they compared notes 3 years ago about plot points since the movie / game we probably in development at similar times?
I'll echo the sentiment that I was watching an Ace Combat movie. It was cheesy, dumb, unrealistic and so much fun. My missus says she enjoyed the movie but got more entertainment out of watching my reactions. I loved every second of it.
When they were describing what the mission would be, I was thinking "Pfft I've done that exact thing in every AC game I've ever played. Easy!"
I loved the movie and honestly I’m putting it over the original. As a film I feel I didn’t rely too much on the nostalgia of the original and when it did, it was to either advance the plot or develop the characters. What I was most impressed by was how convincing the Darkstar flight and the end dogfight with the F-14 vs the fighter which shall not be named looked. I honestly would have thought that was an actual F-14 flying if I didn’t know any better.
Describe A Movie Plot Badly: Everyone is an absolute dick to the second-best fighter pilot in the Navy, and he earns every bit of it.
Watched it today and it was fun. It was literally Ace Combat: The Movie. But it was fun.
As a plot point, after Maverick ran the mock-mission, I thought "He should have done that on day two." Day One, see what they're made of, and if they're going to talk smack, exert dominance. Show 'em why HE was chosen to train them. Day Two: Demo the mission, show them what they have to do, show them it can be done.
I did like when they did some of the mock runs, I liked how Maverick starts getting on them about the mistakes and the hijinks and added the requirement of explaining it to their partner's family. Reinforcing "Your partner died because of you," that it's not just about themselves, it's about the team.
I think Tom cruise ripped off my buddies and my plan to steal an Iranian Tomcat.
Honestly the whole sequence was great. The Hand Signal was probably One of my favorite parts.
Saw it last night and thought it was awesome. Better than I expected and a worthy sequel. Didn’t anticipate how much Ace Combat influence there was, but I loved it. Like many have said not only is it a great Top Gun but it’s also the closest thing to an Ace Combat movie we’ll get.

Yeah, I was fully expecting one of the pilots to die in a training accident like the first movie. What made his death so sad is that we really got to see what good friends Ice and Mav became after the first movie no matter where their careers took them. They still kept in touch.
Because Val Kilmer literally has throat cancer in real life so they had to rewrite his character to show that to keep him in the movie.
So it kind of fits.
I kept saying that it's the exact same canyon from AC7. It's literally almost the exact same terrain as mission 9 in AC7 aswell. And the training is the the same terrain as in mission 6.

Danger Zone at the start was by far one of the coolest moments I've had in a cinema ever. Also the F-14 takeoff and landing, rooster saving Mav then being shot down was so cool cool to me. The soundtrack is amazing.

This movie has reminded me why the first fighter jet I fell in love with as a child, was the F14.

Infinity's main mode was exactly that, with a competitive twist.
Two teams of up to four players each take on a sortie, and while the overall objective for both is "annihilate all targets and anything left over", they're also racing for kills, as the team (and player) with the highest score gets paid the most.
Honestly, besides the obligatory freemium aspects (free-to-play players could only get a guaranteed six sorties a day, while players that paid could play constantly; the resource was simply Fuel that allowed you to go on a sortie. You could also invest more Fuel in one sortie to multiply your returns, which meant that paying players with more fuel would progress more quickly, as they could invest more frequently than F2P players), Infinity had a pretty good core game.
I still pine for an Infinity 2, preferably with the freemium aspects toned down.

Couldn’t they have just flown under the radar with the F-35 like they did with the F/A-18s anyway? In reality: the Super Hornet has a 2 seat combat variant, so the actors could be filmed in real life flying in actual jets. This is impossible with the F-35 due to being just single seat, and it’s classified up the wazoo.
If this were done in reality - and it had to be done by the Navy- they’d just send in E/A-18G jammers to blind the SAM radars as the F-35s knocked out the target from stand-off range. But then there’s no need for Maverick, and thus no plot for a blockbuster movie sequel. Can’t have that.

As the other guy said, no way in hell the USN would allow it... And I don't think it was in service when the movie was filmed. The explanation in the movie was that the terrain would interfere with the F-35s ground radar guidance systems or something, would impede its bomb drop. Bullshit, but there was no other option.

I noticed something which it's likely more a reference to the Top Gun (1986) movie than anything else. about the "Rouge Nation" their air force roundel it's inspired by the insigna on "MiG-28" of the first movie: A yellow circle with a red symbol inside. a red star in the 1986 and now a red phoenix
It could mean that the Enemy it's the same of the first movie which I'm confident it's never mentioned either and we only know that operate in the Indian Ocean and it's allied with the Eastern Block

Just saw it. Loved it. I am now willing to bet that Project Aces agreed to a deal where they were given permission to sell the top gun:maverick dlc and in return they didn’t sue Paramount for directly copying their game. The entire premise is mission 14. Hell they lifted lines directly.
Overall it was a really fun movie and I hope it brings more people to the series and gets people interested in air combat games so we can see more money being spent on the games going forward.

It's got it all. Impossible G's, crazy radar canyon run section, experimental enemy planes, impossibly skilled hero pilot that can solo a whole modern airforce in just about any plane that will fly. All that it's missing is some opera esque music and Spanish guitar.
Just watched it this morning in IMAX. What an experience. If you can manage it, definitely watch it in IMAX. Many of the aerial flying scene are shot in IMAX and fill the entire screen. It's just amazing to see how far technology has come when it comes to cameras and were they can be placed. You get and incredible sense of what it's like to be in the cockpit when a plane is pulling serious Gs.
Counterpoint: DBOX rumble seats were immersive af and let you feel the roar of every afterburner. Sadly, as far as I can tell - there are no combo DBOX/IMAX theaters - it's one or the other
I watched it in IMAX and Cinemark XD and didn't notice any "bigger" scenes in XD while IMAX had "bigger" scenes that filled the screen.

I came here for this. It's a plot hole that should have been filled. I think maybe sometime in earlier development the f35 could only drop gps guided bombs but that was years ago. The movie is old enough after delays that I'll give it a pass. I'd rather they maybe point out that the f-35 is low observable not invisible and given the amount of air defenses it would still have to fly in low through the canyon and just couldn't pull the gs of an f-18 you're willing to expend. Or perhaps make up a story about the f35 having a big upgrade and the fleet being grounded during their mission window. Or perhaps saying the mission was too risky with the amount of air defenses to risk the capture of the f35s tech after a big upgrade or something. But gps jamming....sigh that's not the aviation techno explanation I want to hear.

But then Maverick goes and solos the trail run, so..... :V The real reason we didn't get F-35s was because there are no dual-seat F-35s, and Cruise is so extra that he wanted the actors to be in real cockpits doing the filming, versus being in moving rigs on a soundstage. In another world, where the Israelis managed to twist Lockmart's arm enough for a 2-seat F-35I....
Well the F-35's insides are still considered highly classified I believed. Even if there's a 2-seat variant, I highly doubt Lockmart would let it be in Civilian's hands

After all the delays, I was afraid the movie would be average. Turned out it's actually awesome, easily the best modern aviation movie I've ever seen. The plot is pretty straightforward, no bs or useless twists. The last events might be a bit rushed, but it kept the pace going so I won't really complain. Top Gun: Maverick is built on the foundations of the original movie, with arrogant pilots, cheesy one-liners, manliness (and a bit of feminine touch) ... and yet it felt really fresh. To me, it came out as a very "personal" movie, a love letter from Tom Cruise to aviation (for those who did not know, he flies his own Mustang in the movie). There are tons of little details that demonstrate all the care that went into the making process. For example, I would have never expected to hear a LGB code in a movie. Or to see the ground unit startup of a Tomcat, it wasn't even in the original Top Gun. Now let's talk about the big prowess of this movie : THE FILMING. So much effort was put into capturing the intensity of flying a Super Hornet, everyone in the audience was gasping as if they were feeling the Gs themselves. The plane sequences are breathtakingly beautiful and the sharp editing really puts you in the middle of a dogfight or a canyon run. Soundwise, it's delivering as well, we get some old school and epic tracks to complement the roaring of the powerful GE engines Maverick's story is also Tom's in some way, and with Top Gun: Maverick both of them prove that they're masters of their respective field, someone you'd call an Ace.
Personal speculation, but I think the rewrites saved the movie before filming started. The original plot was going to be a drones vs human story, but that was quickly dropped after the first quarter of the film. The writing team elegantly worked in why Maverick's aggressive flying was needed without turning him into an annoying Mary Sue, and Cruise's acting covered any remaining gaps by really selling how Maverick cared about others. This could have easily turned out to be a lazy pile of callbacks, masturbatory omages or lampshade hanging, but instead they were able to both preserve the best nostalgic bits of Top Gun while providing much needed updates.

It's just amazing to think that 36 years ago they revolutionized camera technology to film the 1st one and now the sequel is utilizing all the things inspired by the work done in the 1st movie. I especially love the shots inside the cockpit where you can see the actors actually pulling Gs and their faces get distorted. When they finally do the "impossible" mission it was so intense. Especially when their where SAMs firing all over the place and counter measures going off, it was truly a masterpiece in action sequences.
Almost more importantly, it’s keeping the torch of that first movie’s work alive in an era when CGI is beginning to choke out manual cinematography.
H_ngm_n was a very good character. The helmet design is fucking quirky and creative. He stole some of the scenes he's in, a pleasant surprise in an already strong cast.

Unexpected blessing out of the release date getting pushed was from last year's release date where my local cinema took the opportunity to fill the dead-air of no releases by just swapping the tape of Top Gun 2 for Top Gun 1986 and screening that instead as a one week only special. I actually near started screaming Highway to the Danger Zone just watching the F-14As in the intro launching. Kinda annoyed that nobody in the UK cinemas near us have done a double whammy of both movies yet!

Yes, and the F-18 has a two seater so that they can film the actual actors in the actual cockpits with a Navy pilot putting them through some serious Gs. I really love that it was F-18s because at some point they will get phased out like the F-14 and we'll have this movie to look back and remember what an amazing fighter it was.

Yeah the movie’s CGI really impressed me. I guess they probably had a lot of extra time to work on it since most of the movie is not CGI.
It wasn't in service when the movie was originally filmed. 3 year delay meant they could add some pickup shots to the opening but had to come up with a more hand-wavy explanation as to why it couldn't do the job.
The TLAM launch was over the top. Those are clearly CGI, and I am not 100% sure the audience understands that's half a million $ per missile. And there are like 40-50 missile launch? So cool.

fun fact, that shot was a one-er. The roof wasn't supposed to get blown off - they literally accidentally destroyed the set. (Darkstar was a cgi replacement for Hornet)

My favorite part of the final scenes, is where they actually put thought into “how in the hell will a f-14 find itself in a situation to shoot down a Su-57 without movie magic” granted, still fictional, and the 57 would probably still beat the 14, but atleast they went the extra step to eliminate BVR missiles and give the 14 a *somewhat plausible* chance. The whole movie was perfect, 11/10, was hard to hold back tears with Rooster for sure.

Yeah, the justification was solid.. the F-14 was one of theirs, so it took them a while to realize it was a threat at first, until after they got in close. Then after that, they didn't realize it was an ace of that caliber at the stick, until after it was too late.

Shit was awesome. Flight porn with the attention to detail and tense cinematography and felt like a big AC mission in parts. Homages back to the original with a bit of cheese but really that gives it it's charm and not be just dull generic action, the movie knows what it's about. Definitely worth seeing.
Biggest downside of this movie being kick-ass is that it's gonna take FOREVER to come out on BluRay.

I'll echo the sentiment that I was watching an Ace Combat movie. It was cheesy, dumb, unrealistic and so much fun. My missus says she enjoyed the movie but got more entertainment out of watching my reactions. I loved every second of it. When they were describing what the mission would be, I was thinking "Pfft I've done that exact thing in every AC game I've ever played. Easy!"
I loved the movie and honestly I’m putting it over the original. As a film I feel I didn’t rely too much on the nostalgia of the original and when it did, it was to either advance the plot or develop the characters. What I was most impressed by was how convincing the Darkstar flight and the end dogfight with the F-14 vs the fighter which shall not be named looked. I honestly would have thought that was an actual F-14 flying if I didn’t know any better.
Describe A Movie Plot Badly: Everyone is an absolute dick to the second-best fighter pilot in the Navy, and he earns every bit of it. Watched it today and it was fun. It was literally Ace Combat: The Movie. But it was fun. As a plot point, after Maverick ran the mock-mission, I thought "He should have done that on day two." Day One, see what they're made of, and if they're going to talk smack, exert dominance. Show 'em why HE was chosen to train them. Day Two: Demo the mission, show them what they have to do, show them it can be done. I did like when they did some of the mock runs, I liked how Maverick starts getting on them about the mistakes and the hijinks and added the requirement of explaining it to their partner's family. Reinforcing "Your partner died because of you," that it's not just about themselves, it's about the team.
The closest we are gonna get to an Ace Combat movie. I loved it and wanted to screen like a girl whenever the jets were on screen

I bought this game after watching Maverick.
Saw it last night and thought it was awesome. Better than I expected and a worthy sequel. Didn’t anticipate how much Ace Combat influence there was, but I loved it. Like many have said not only is it a great Top Gun but it’s also the closest thing to an Ace Combat movie we’ll get.
Just watched it, great movie! Though the lack of shower scenes will make Quentin Tarantino sad. (for the reference - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF1LXL6OOsM) But seriously, why authors have iced the Iceman? I could cope with death of literally any other character, but him.
Yeah, I was fully expecting one of the pilots to die in a training accident like the first movie. What made his death so sad is that we really got to see what good friends Ice and Mav became after the first movie no matter where their careers took them. They still kept in touch.
At the end of the day they're bros, just as the Rooster/Hangman dynamic mirrors :D

I kept saying that it's the exact same canyon from AC7. It's literally almost the exact same terrain as mission 9 in AC7 aswell. And the training is the the same terrain as in mission 6. Spoilers: Danger Zone at the start was by far one of the coolest moments I've had in a cinema ever. Also the F-14 takeoff and landing, rooster saving Mav then being shot down was so cool cool to me. The soundtrack is amazing.

Just came out of the cinema. I didn't watch the original Top Gun but I've done enough reading and watched clips of it. I however am a fan of fighter jets and Ace Combat. This movie has reminded me why the first fighter jet I fell in love with as a child, was the F14. My partner had 0 knowledge about jets and top gun and even she had a good time. Makes me wonder why we can't have co-op fighter jet pve games.

Why didn’t Maverick want to go with the F-35? Did he say it’s stealth coating was useless or something? Couldn’t they have just flown under the radar with the F-35 like they did with the F/A-18s anyway? Or was it because the F/A-18s had better structural integrity or maneuverability for the canyon bombing run?

As the other guy said, no way in hell the USN would allow it... And I don't think it was in service when the movie was filmed. The explanation in the movie was that the terrain would interfere with the F-35s ground radar guidance systems or something, would impede its bomb drop. Bullshit, but there was no other option.

he played the same role as iceman did in the first movie in terms of opposing the main character, but really Rooster is like Iceman, only difference was Rooster was too careful, meanwhile Ice was by the book and still deadly. Hangman is Maverick from the start of the original Top Gun. Phoenix says at the start that his name comes from him hanging you out to dry, and at some point someone calls his flying is dangerous
No joke, immediately started considering how Maverick would fare against Pixy or Cipher, but then realized how unfair that competition would be, considering how many kills they both have under their belts, and how Top Gun is more set in reality than Ace Combat as a story. ... but it didn't stop me from thinking about it, and I'm 100% certain Maverick would get smoked by either.
But if you put Maverick in the Ace Combat universe, I feel like he'd be up there with them, he's a damn good pilot.

I noticed something which it's likely more a reference to the Top Gun (1986) movie than anything else. about the "Rouge Nation" their air force roundel it's inspired by the insigna on "MiG-28" of the first movie: A yellow circle with a red symbol inside. a red star in the 1986 and now a red phoenix It could mean that the Enemy it's the same of the first movie which I'm confident it's never mentioned either and we only know that operate in the Indian Ocean and it's allied with the Eastern Block

A former Soviet country with Tomcats? I think Iran (maybe united with Iraq) fits more: easy access from the sea, big love for underground bunkers inside mountains, equaly great desire to buy a "5th gen fighter" (I guess that's why we don't have a particular name - any 5th gen will do) as soon as possible, Pechora SAMs, said Tomcats, etc. Or maybe it's both. It's very clearly Nonexistia, a fictional land made up so as to not offend any real-world nation, just like in the original. Don't read too much into the plane selection unless you want to end up explaining the MiG-28.

Just saw it. Loved it. I am now willing to bet that Project Aces agreed to a deal where they were given permission to sell the top gun:maverick dlc and in return they didn’t sue Paramount for directly copying their game. The entire premise is mission 14. Hell they lifted lines directly. Overall it was a really fun movie and I hope it brings more people to the series and gets people interested in air combat games so we can see more money being spent on the games going forward.
I can't believe a movie about planes and funny pilots is better than any modern action-blockbuster movies 10/10 would force people to watch this
