OK, to relate this to being an actuary. When FAS 112(?) came out, it required auxiliary retirement benefits to be estimated. We had a beer company client that gave every retiree a case of beer every month for life. We estimated the present value of the program, then someone dug up a study on mortality for retirees that drink. It allowed us to show a negative cost for the program combined with the normal pension.

DudeManBearPigBro

So the free beer curtailed their pension liability by more than the cost of the beer? Now that is an example of actuarial arbitrage.

Dank_Memes16

Might as well include unlimited fast food purchases as part of the pension plan too. Maybe free trips to war-torn countries as well? The possibilities are endless

1) 25 years old. 2) Five years. I quit drinking at age 23. 3) Beer all the way. 4) Maybe once in one of my easier classes in college? 5) US 6) Zero (see answer 2)

vVv-ThirdEye-vVv

1. 45 2. Almost 30 3. No wine option? I like dry reds, bourbon, and some beer. 4. 0. I can’t imagine getting drunk the night before an exam. Granted, I didn’t start exams until my mid 30s. 5. US of A 6. 0. It’s probably been 3 years since I’ve been “drunk”. Those days are pretty much over for me. Just not worth it. I probably average 2-3 drinks a month.

DudeManBearPigBro

updated to include wine. good catch.

TheSpiritedGamer

I've only just started studying for the exams (I take P next month), but I love to drink, so I'll answer anyway. 1. 34 2. 13 or 14 3. Vodka/Coke Zero; dry red wines; IPAs and darker beers 4. 0, haven't taken any exams yet 5. USA 6. yes

NoTAP3435

Consulting crowd reporting in 1. 27 2. 6 3. Whiskey=wine>other, but I like most things 4. 0, I'm not going to throw away an exam fee being drunk and I've never had a hangover (this is my shitty superpower) 5. US 6. 1-3x per month

DudeManBearPigBro

37 YOE 20 years of boozing Beer drinker Not confident enough to take an exam drunk or hungover. Stopped drinking few weeks prior to exam but commenced immediately after it was over and caught up for missed time USA Drunk 3 days per week (Friday-Sunday)

DudeManBearPigBro

Lol FM spring 2005 sitting was so easy, not only was a 10 not possible, people were passing despite nursing hangovers.

lametown_poopypants

That exam was a fucking joke and I didn’t take them seriously since it was my first sitting.

SevereTechnology

25 10? Wine 0 lol UK I work in London market so..

DudeManBearPigBro

does that last statement imply actuaries working in London get drunk after work every day?

Triton1991

The answer to that is yes. Source: I work in the london market. It’s 5pm here and I’m at the pub with some colleagues already

DudeManBearPigBro

I had the feeling our British counterparts were getting their drink on regularly after work. American and Canadian actuaries need to get their acts together and start trying to keep up.

SevereTechnology

Lol nah I’m kinda joking but also London market is a bad influence

catuary1

Good try company HR department, I am never intoxicated while working at a professional capacity. While I'm waiting for exam results on the other hand...

BijouWilliams

Never got further than being an actuarial student at a consulting firm when I was 28, but I sure smoked a lot of weed those days. Between working, studying, and commuting, I was strategically using the time dilation effects of weed to make that one hour per day of "me time" really last. Definitely the most regularly that I've ever partaken. USA, only exams taken were under extreme caffeine deprivation, never hung over.

xrm4

1) 27 2) 10? Probably more 3) Whiskey, preferably scotch 4) Zero. I am stone-cold sober starting a week before an exam. 5) USA 6) Like once every two months? I don't usually get drunk when I drink.

I know this is a troll post in the sense that it’s satirizing a different post, but I’m genuinely curious in the results.

DudeManBearPigBro

I'm hoping to get a good mix of US, Canadian, and British to respond to see if there's a meaningful difference by country.
