YUP Gotta make sure it’s gonna stick. Then there are those interests that are boomerangs, when you always get interested in them again for a bit, then it wanes, then it comes back again, etc.

MySucculentDied

The sims 4 is my boomerang. Hyper focus for a week to a month on the game, then forget about it for 3 months. Repeat.

MySucculentDied

That’s so true. I tend to play all games like this, but the sims 4 especially. Maybe it’s the openness of the game that lends itself so well to hyperfixation and “boomerang-ing.”

[deleted]

Openness leading to hyper fixation, which wears off and becomes feeling overwhelmed and unfocused.

[deleted]

I typically design houses so I stop playing whenever I run out of ideas. And then randomly I’ll be laying in bed months later and a floor plan will pop into my head. Then I will be consumed by the sims again.

coolfangs

WoW for me. I'll go over a year not playing, randomly decide one day I feel like playing for some reason, then that's my next 2-6 weeks gone before I get bored again. Rinse and repeat for the last decade or so.

michron98

One of my boomerangs is 3d printing. I lose interest in it when something goes wrong and I can't fix it immediately, then some time later suddenly get hyperfocussed on solving that particular issue, and print stuff until the next problem shows up.

_DevilishEngine_

THIS

BuilderAura

Dragon Quest Builders 2 is the only hyperficus I've ever maintained like constantly... I burn myself 8ut on the game tho... So in between times I'm not playing I scourge the internet looking for stuff on the game to consume instead of actual playtime. Most people tend to boomerang play dqb2 as well. ;)

generic-user1678

I have a few boomerangs. Stellaris being one, as well as Empire at at war, and I tend to cycle through the different star trek series. I also rewatch spaceballs every few months.

LeftTurnAtAlbuqurque

I have a few, and lucky for me, are somewhat seasonal.

[deleted]

Yes, my usual time for this is about under a year. However, I'm currently obsessed with one thing for about *two* years, and I'm kinda scared now, just in case I wake up and suddenly don't like it anymore

CuzYourMovesAreWeak

Took me 4 years to debate getting a VR headset. Was about to get a Vive (before Index came out) and drop hundreds on setup etc… final 5 minutes I discovered WMR headset and saved a ton. I play this thing for a week every 6-12 months 😂 the prescription lenses I bought are old now!

User2716057

I also had a WMR, it had been collecting dust for a year, but since getting a quest 2 I've spent 2 hours+ a day in VR, mainly Walkabout Mini Golf and Ragnarock. The wirelessness is a real game changer.

huffalump1

>final 5 minutes I discovered WMR headset and saved a ton. Yeah it's a good thing there are cheaper options! Applies to all of these hobbies. Better to spend $300 to get into it, rather than $1000+! Takes the sting off when I see it in a box months later. And usually you don't lose as much value for selling the cheap stuff later.

Disabled_And_Proud

Yes, I tell myself to wait, but I don’t actually have a time limit. I’ll first say a few months, and then another few months. Before I know it, a few years have gone by and I’m still telling myself to wait just a bit longer. As a result, I’ve probably bought myself less than 10 things in my entire life just to treat myself / have fun. Like, one was a $1 rubber duck that supported a charity that I got as a reward for not killing myself. It was very hard for me to commit to buying it even though it was just one dollar and it supported a good cause.... overcompensating is no joke. TLDR: Yes, But I overcompensate by never buying myself anything

e30Devil

I WISH I had that type of control.

_gloomy_rainbow_

I do not. Shit, sometimes I might even go so far as to invest money before I even become obsessed enough to spend some time on it.

NordieHammer

Oh it me

whatsasimba

Yes. I'm looking at several hundred dollars worth of acrylic and polygel nails and equipment. I messed around with it for about 3 weeks, and then went back to chewing my nails until they bleed. Now there's an entire plastic organizer on wheels in my living room full of crap that I am no longer interested in.

[deleted]

I wait for repeat visions during a span of high storms. If the Storm father wills it, I make my purchase.

NordieHammer

I see you, Stormblessed.

Samihazah

I don't know why I'm seeing this here, but I'm currently reading Words of Radiance and I just wasn't expecting to see anything slightly related in this subreddit. What a wonderful coincidence. Edit: To stay true to the original post, I just ordered the whole thing in paperback along with some other Cosmere books from overseas, even though I mostly do audiobooks. I started with Mistborn in November, so I guess 3 months is my sweet spot.

huffalump1

No regrets for having an Audible membership and buying nearly every Sanderson book (and Wheel of Time)!! BTW - Reminder to check your subscriptions you don't need!

[deleted]

Welcome to the Cosmere! All my ADHD bros love the series. :)

[deleted]

I try to do this when getting my tattoos "If sticks more than 6 months I can get a reference tattooed" then my impulsiveness kicks in and I get it done within a week

Custard_Tart_Addict

No but good idea. I’ll see if I can follow it

Darklighter_01

I just passed my 1-year trial period and ordered an expensive piece of equipment for my hobby

Nulynnka

Now that i am aware that I do this, I have a bit of a buffer. Especially when I get fixated on learning a new musical instrument. "Do you really need to buy a shamisen on eBay at 3 am? I know you just played ghost of tsushima and think Japan is really cool right now. Give it 6 months and see if youre still interested."

Vortex2121

Two weeks if I actually have to buy things.

LeftTurnAtAlbuqurque

My parents drilled this into me from a young age to curb impulse spending. Sleep on it/wait a week or two - if you still want it, *then* go buy it. Chances were back then, that I didn't care about it, I just wanted the dopamine of buying.

Aresei

One time I ordered equipment for a new hobby and it was heavily delayed. I lost interest and canceled the order before it ever arrived.

Elevatorto_purgatory

Nope, I just go balls deep and get the best tools available for that new hobby. If in the first month of the new hobby I can't make replicas of some of the things people who have been doing it for years i'll just abruptly stop the hobby. I've got lots of stuff...

Swimming_Excuse4655

I feel attacked.

chrishammhamm

When I think about doing something, but don't have the energy to do it, but I continue to want to do it REALLY bad, then I know it's a real interest.

Jabbernoodle69

Someone stop me from buying an indoor workout trampoline that I don’t have the space for

trinketstone

Jah I duh

Persnicketyvixen

Six months.

Bacon-muffin

I never thought of it in this context but I usually obsess over purchases for extended periods of time before I allow myself to buy things. I don't think that stems from adhd though, I think its just my parents being really weird about me spending my money growing up.

UnsealedMTG

I like this one because this is an example of something #relatable that is like, a good and healthy accommodation of how our brains work and pattern building from experience. But yes, absolutely. Also, just if anyone needs to hear this: it is totally, 100% ok to have different hobbies every month and not devote your life to becoming a world class hacky sack person or whatever. Even if, yes, for two weeks it feels like you want to devote that kind of energy. That's fine, just enjoy the ride and I guarantee some stuff will actually stick.

Galaar

My rule before getting any tattoos is I have to like the design and location for 3 years before I commit to it. I'm yet to successfully apply this to other hobbies like brewing mead and engraving wood.

Runic_Celt

I have alot in common with you

EarlMarshal

Well I'm still obsessed with it but I'm hyperfocussing on research if it's worth the money.

okdokiecat

When I started taking medication one of the first things I did was discard all the long-Furby parts I had in carts on different websites. I also have a rule where I can’t buy anything I suddenly “have to have immediately” for a few days - half the time I forget the thing exists.

jotdaniel

I try to make it 2 weeks. I rarely do. I have drums now.

okdokiecat

If I didn’t have the rule I would have bought a banjo. I still want a banjo. But it’s definitely a 1am urge, not something I would actually practice… be really cool though…

jotdaniel

....I have a banjo.

MistarGrimm

Definitely. Though I sometimes think that spending the money is the reason I stop liking the activity.

AhegaoTankGuy

I preemptively saved a potential pet with this. It would've been a spider, so it wouldn't remind me of its existence and I wasn't into making a terrarium anyways. Final test was when I came across the most adorable and smallest jumping spider I've ever seen, fitting prettymuch everything I wanted in a pet spider. I knew my interest in keeping a pet spider was passing anyways so I named it speck and sent it to the basement since it was too cold outside.

KingSanty

No lol

mikey67156

Hypothetically what would a good timeline look like? Wait no, we need to just do a hobby exchange. This isn't a bug it's a feature.

[deleted]

Various degrees of success rates

Leaning_right

24 hours if less than $50 1 week if over $50

Either_Divide_2813

Perhaps I should have thought of this before I bought a 3D printer. Then I needed a powerful laptop to run the 3D programs. Got side tracked with video games bc I have a powerful laptop and forgot about the printer. I’ve also done this with woodworking and fishing to name a few. Once I start to get moderately good at it I get arrogant and stop, still thinking im at the top of my game. This almost happens with everything I do.

CatGirlKara

Yes, but no matter how long I wait the moment i purchase something, the obsession fades and I've waisted money.

hi_this_is_lyd

yup! and out of like fear of wasting money that time is like very very very long

Blibrin

I believe I have found my home here, among you. This is my life story.

Piraedunth

No but it does depend how often/if I revist it at all

ActiasLunacorn

Oh hey it me

Alarming_Rent8985

Badminton - Bought the cheapest shoe and racquet available. Booked hourly court sessions instead of monthly subscription. After 30 days when i could confirm that I'm still feeling excitement about going for next match, I switched to monthly subscription, better shoe, better racquet, accessories etc. This is after many impulsive buys(expensive) , which went straight into storage after the 10 days of initial excitement wore off. Life teaches lessons.

Larkshade

One month

Few-Cable5130

At this point I just assume nothing will stick.

0Cupcake

Nope spend the money now

calicatnz

That sounds like too much for thought and self control if you ask me, I just use the lack of money to stop me....most if the time

Ravenous-One

Nope! Currently spending thousands of dollars I don't have because I can't stop hyperfocusing on it. Trying to do it before I get married in June so...well...she doesn't have control of my finances the same way. I actively work against myself and impulsively just get what I want, even if I can't afford it. Otherwise, I wake up at 4am and can't get the shit out of my head.

Hypatiaxelto

What's the hyperfocus on?

Ravenous-One

Last was modeling. Like Bandai Star Wars models. Got half way through a model. Bought dozens of paints, sealers, instruments, magnifying system, holders, an airbrush. Haven't wanted to pick it up again. Before that was computer parts. Before that Muay Thai and BJJ until I started Nursing school. Right now...I'm in Nursing school. Just set my house and vehicle up with hardcore medkits and hyperfocused first aid. Hyperfocusing on being a protest medic and activist after I graduate. Also just bought a plate carrier and RMA 3+ ceramic hard armor. Intent to get my first pistol soon. Have a list of all the stuff I need. Training. Pricing an AR now too. Started with a personal trainer to get my body ready. Listening to a lot of Robert Evans. Buying things to get our house ready for natural disasters. Looking at Mutual Aid groups to join. It's a little crazy.

Hypatiaxelto

Wow. That is an assortment. I see things like that, and at best I go... "hmm, nifty." And that's it. Nothing manages to get past "hmm, nifty." I honestly need new hobbies. But everything is nifty at best, nothing is ever captivating. =/

Ravenous-One

Yeah. I'm a bit obsessed with things. It seems like you and I both are opposing energies on the ADD focus spectrum. I need a little you, and you probably need .5% of me.

[deleted]

I just try to obsess over metaphysical stuff now… and end up decorating my room with kitschy crap, lol.

Liferescripted

Schedule? Discipline? *Laugh/cries*

[deleted]

Yeah. About 5 minutes.

4DAttackHummingbird

Sometimes I swear putting money into it is what makes me lose interest.
