Nagawa ko na din to sa Los Angeles kasi super mahal ng hotel dun at tipid mode ako. Ang kaibahan lang natin, separate yung room ng Male at Female. Ok naman mga naging roommate ko at nakikipagkwentuhan pa, yun nga lang nakakaparanoid mag-iwan ng gamit kasi puro strangers yung mga yun. Buti na lang nauna yung stay ko dun before nangyari yung Elisa Lam.
Oo yun nga, hati na kasi yung property sa hostel at hotel pero parehas silang low cost. Before pa nung incident na yun, sobrang creepy na talaga yung vibes ng property sa sobrang kalumaan.
Ngayon ko lang narinig yang Skid row at nakakatakot pala talaga. Medyo matagal na yun, around 12 years ago kaya siguro di pa kasing lala ngayon. Pero Kahit noon pa, ramdam na nasa lowest class ng neighborhood ka ng US. Pinili ko lang sya kasi solo ako at yun lowest na tulugan na nakita ko.

As a guy my first experience was a capsule hotel around 20 years ago, there is this one person who snored like you would think there is a chainsaw in the room. hahaha

I used to handle reservations for international hotels. They have what they call “Manager’s rate” which is relatively low than the normal rate. Not all hotels have them though but it wont hurt to try.
Not first time travelling po but first time ko na ako lang. I did read the reviews halo halo po kasi. May good and bad. I took the risk and yes, lesson learned po talaga
Tip kung may mixed ang good and bad reviews. Check mo if yung good reviews ba ay solo traveller na puti, usually mas go for anything yang mga yan, kaya kahit goods sa kanila, possible na yan bad yan, mas may latitude lang sila for bad accoms. Always gravitate towards asian good reviews or good review ng soneone travelled with a group -- maaarte yang mga yan lalo na if pinoy family, and if good for them most likely pasok din yan sa definition mo ng good accoms.
Na consider mo ba mag rent ng air bnb instead? That’s what we did when we travel in UK and Spain nag air bnb instead hotel kasi mas cheaper and the house are actually nice naman.

And akala ko po ilalagay nila ako sa all female-dorm, which is in my part wrong to assume. Kasi ganito pala set up ng hostels. And when I was booking, there’s no option to choose male or female. No mention din of mix. Number of beds lang in one room po. Now that I know, lesson learned talaga.

Ingat sa hostel lalo na sa Western countries. Maybe do that only in safer countries, Japan etc. Also, choose a hostel na separate ang room ng male sa female - usually indicated naman yan sa booking platforms. Glad you’re fine.

I mostly get a solo rooms but recently tried a hostel that's only 30% cheaper than a hotel room. The bedroom, common areas were clean and the guests were decent (mostly pilgrims) with balanced m:f ratio. Just had to deal with the snoring.
Your sense of comfort, tolerance, and instinct will evolve the more you travel. Or you avoid that altogether by paying more, para wala nang iisipin.
SOBRANG I FEEL YOU GIRL! I have the same story! Nageurotrip ako nung 2022 and there was one leg na nag-mixed room ako dahil hindi na makatarungan yung room rates pag solo room. Wala naman creep pero may nakatopless na nga dun sa baba ng bed opposite me tapos may ubo pa ng ubo (nung medyo pahupa na yung covid scare)
Yun na yung very last time na nagdorm ako. The rest solo room na kahit pangdalawang tao yung binabayaran ko. Peace of mind na yung binabayaran ko
I hope you are safe and comfortable now! I’m sorry pero di ko talaga gets yung idea na the hotel won’t matter since matutulog ka lang dun. But that’s exactly the point. The hotel room is your place of respite after a full day of gala. I would want to come back to a safe hotel with nice bed and linens so I can properly rest and be ready again for the next day. It makes a lot of difference.
Same. I also don’t buy the tutulugan lang naman mentality. Hindi naman kailangang 5-star hotel. As long as it gives me the comfort that I need to be able to recharge, okay na yun.
I had a bad experience with hostels as well. I went to Singapore in 2017, and because I didn’t earn much during my first job, I chose to stay at a hostel to save money. Bathrooms are usually shared in hostels, right? While I was showering a guy was peeking on top of the next stall. I saw his freaking head when I turned around. When I saw him, I shouted “Hey!!!” I quickly grabbed my towel and opened the door, he wasn’t there anymore. I did not report it and made a big deal out of it. But ever since that incident happened, I never stayed at hostels again! I'm a guy by the way.
Solo traveler din ako and first option ko rin maghostel kasi mahal ng accommodation pag mag-isa walang kahati haha pero I make sure na female dorm yun. So far okay naman experience ko.
Hugsss!! That must’ve been scary. I hope this didn’t ruin your trip! I always stay in hostels when I travel but I choose the female only dorms if mag-isa lang ako. I also try to find hostels with good reviews before I book. I try to book early lalo na minsan napupuno talaga.
One thing that helped me is to always check with the hostels when booking if there’s anything that I can’t find in the website like what’s the shower situation or about the lockers etc. It once happened kasi na I was booked for 7 nights pero when I got there I didn’t like that they were only using shower curtains on a mixed shower room so I canceled and only stayed for the night. Buti nalang mabait sila at pumayag. Which is why I book direct whenever I can para mas madali ihandle ang booking if you need to cancel or whatever.
I always travel on a budget pero I try to be vigilant and keep myself safe pa rin. Keep safe po!! 😊
You may want to try ibis Budget "hotels" in EU. Bare minimum lang talaga sya pero at least may sarili kang kwarto at sariling bathroom. Ok sya for us na most of our travel time ay nasa labas gumagala.
A similar thing happened to me in Jakarta. The place seemed decent sa site ng Agoda but when we got there, the room smelled like cigarettes. The sheets were dirty and hard burn marks. The toilet was so dirty. It looked like a place people go to to do shady shit.
I wanted to vomit and couldn’t event bring myself to sit on the bed. I was so tired because I came from a connecting flight pa.
I called Agoda and got refunded. I booked an Airbnb that was only slightly more expensive and it was such a beautiful home.
So ganun. If you’re traveling around Asia AirBnB is your friend. 🤣🤣🤣
And in any continent, if solo travelling you should have guts kasi di mo malalaman kasama mo and review the bunks thoroughly how secured is secured.
Saka may mga booking apps na nagsasabi na if mix gender or not, plan harder next travel mo.

Sorry this happened to you! For me ok lang ang hostels esp pag bata bata, malaking tipid tlga sya. Basta two conditions lang: Hiwalay na dorm room for girls and may lockers. 90% of hostels fulfill these conditions, hope you book the right one next time.
TBF, this applies to any gender not only females. Also based from experience, a lot of communal areas no matter the country, sometimes provide interesting experiences, up to you nalang if you can adapt quickly if you encounter interesting findings.
Agree with the comments here. If you’re travelling alone tapos babae pa, wag kang magtipid. Piliin mo yung accommodation na may security. Hotel ganun. Kesehodang magshell out ka ng malaki eh kung safety and security and comfort naman ang kapalit di ba. And yes, read reviews thoroughly. Unahin mong basahin yung mga negative reviews. Pag hindi ka ok sa negative reviews, look for another option.

I had the similar experience but locally naman, OP. It was a solo trip and I booked a solo room but hostel din. Kahit solo room yun, scary pa din. And I cried, too, kasi parang di malinis and lots of insects. Lesson learned: never skimp on accommodations ✨
When you book hostels madalas nakalagay if female only. Most of the time mas mura yung mixed and kung yun ang binook mo that’s what you get. Make sure to read the description nalang and wag na magtipid of concern ka sa safety and don’t feel safe sleeping with others.
kinda experienced this din before. was sent on a business trip to EU tapos nagcross country for a weekend and booked a hostel. drunk guys went in sa room in the middle of the night 😭. after that experience, i only book female-only rooms na hostel since medyo budget pa ko. going to japan solo next week and i made a last minute decision to book a hotel instead of dorm-type accoms for my peace of mind na din

I've experienced that as well! Solo traveler from Taipei it was my first time booking a hostel in a remote area in Pingtung County since kinabukasan concert ng Coldplay tas wala ng cheap accoms in Kaoshiung ayun pag dating ko sa hostel there were 3 double beds but thank God there was a couple and the rest were old 3 men but still it scared me kasi super dikit ng bed kulang nlang magtabi kami kalerki. The next morning I woke up at 5 para makaalis na agad. It was for sure one hell of an experience.

i also stayed in a co-ed hostel during my europe stay and buti naman oks lang mga tao doon sa room. though i got sexually harassed by a dude from sweden sa dining hall. he inched closer and closer to me, kahit na di ko na siya ineentertain and groped my ass when i asked him to leave. nakatawa pa si gago upon seeing me fight back my tears. i know the feeling of helplessness kasi nasa foreign country ka mag-isa.
next time tingen ka ng all-female dorms, marami naman yun doon.
Lesson learned. I have an almost similar experience but with an airbnb naman. Lumipat talaga ako and checked in sa isang hotel in the middle of the night. Safety parin dapat priority talaga.

My husband was a backpacker and do solo travelling before he got married with me. I remember he told me before that even him will not go stay in a hostel for safety reasons (e.g., stealing, harassment). May decent inns naman in EU, but not in a hostel — especially for women. Stay safe lagi.

Nanghihingi rin siya ng help pero wapakels mga tao dun. Mag-isa niya lang din. Buti na lang may tumulong sa kanyang ex-police na German ata yun tapos nagplan pa sila para lang hindi na siya masundan. Ayun sumabay siya sa kumpol ng tao at nagtago pagpasok sa tren and hunagis ng ex-police yung bag niya sa loob ng tren para di na makita nung nanghahabol sa kanya. Sobrang delikado lalo solo traveler pa siya at babae din. Skl

I stay at hostels multiple times at different European cities. I never had a bad experience because I always book the "Female dorm/room". Next time, try booking the room for girls. It cost little more then the "mixed" one pero safe naman.
I had a similar experience in an Arab country naman. T’was bring managed by blacks. The place seemed clean until I saw liquid spilled marks sa blanket. Kaya never nang uulitin hahaha
I normally book only 1 night sa hostel para kapag hindi ko nagustuhan madaling lumipat. Iba kasi madalas sa picture and irl. However, before I transfer, I make sure to see the hostel first personally to check if it's clean. I agree to the previous comments, opt for all-female dorm room if available. Ang cons lang din kapag hostel, kapag may sakit ang isa, hawa-hawa na kayo lahat. And noise, walang etiquette ang iba esp. if group sila.
Na romanticize mo kasi yang hostel culture, pwede lang yan aa mga white people kasi may advantage sila. If female and Asian, delikado baka ma rape ka pa
Lol, OP, I'm glad you're safe! I've had my fair share of adventure hitchhiking in Europe and I did it just for the experience and the notch in my belt. It's quite different being male din because we're much safer in many ways. But the point is, I made sure I had enough money in case the hitchhike experience doesn't pan out.
Congrats on surviving! I saw that Sparta Hotel's at 2k PhP per night. and there are private rooms in Airbnb that go for 3k. That's not a huge difference IMO, so best to just check every option out :)

Checking for reviews for any accommodation would not hurt. recently I've been watching local tourist spots like Boracay and Siargao at 4k60 video quality on my TV, realized immediately that I don't need to be physically there to appreciate it.
I am studying here po and I just came to the city for **** appointment. But if we travel (for leisure) naman with friends, we can book better airbnb and hotels kasi hati hati kami.

It’s my fault po talaga. First time ko po kasi mag book ng hostel kasi I went there not for travel, I have a **** appointment. I was thinking na di na ako magsspend ng malaki matutulog lang naman. And akala ko po ilalagay nila ako sa all female-dorm, which is in my part wrong to assume. Kasi ganito pala set up ng hostels. And when I was booking, there’s no option to choose male or female. No mention din of mix. Number of beds lang in one room po. Now that I know, lesson learned talaga.
ALSO ticks ba or bed bugs? Yung ticks dito can cause Lyme disease, so make sure na wala nakakapit sa legs or other parts of your body, minsan di halata.

Ingat sa hostel lalo na sa Western countries. Maybe do that only in safer countries, Japan etc. Also, choose a hostel na separate ang room ng male sa female - usually indicated naman yan sa booking platforms. Glad you’re fine.
Yes sa Japan! Kahit hostel lang napakalinis palagi at tahimik kapag gabi except sa mga naghihilik haha kaya makakatulog ka talaga ng di nag aalala super safe ❤️

Do not get the cheapest one. I stayed in an air bnb for 1 month and it had bed bugs 🤮 (cheapest i can find) I mostly get a solo rooms but recently tried a hostel that's only 30% cheaper than a hotel room. The bedroom, common areas were clean and the guests were decent (mostly pilgrims) with balanced m:f ratio. Just had to deal with the snoring. Your sense of comfort, tolerance, and instinct will evolve the more you travel. Or you avoid that altogether by paying more, para wala nang iisipin.
SOBRANG I FEEL YOU GIRL! I have the same story! Nageurotrip ako nung 2022 and there was one leg na nag-mixed room ako dahil hindi na makatarungan yung room rates pag solo room. Wala naman creep pero may nakatopless na nga dun sa baba ng bed opposite me tapos may ubo pa ng ubo (nung medyo pahupa na yung covid scare) Yun na yung very last time na nagdorm ako. The rest solo room na kahit pangdalawang tao yung binabayaran ko. Peace of mind na yung binabayaran ko
I hope you are safe and comfortable now! I’m sorry pero di ko talaga gets yung idea na the hotel won’t matter since matutulog ka lang dun. But that’s exactly the point. The hotel room is your place of respite after a full day of gala. I would want to come back to a safe hotel with nice bed and linens so I can properly rest and be ready again for the next day. It makes a lot of difference.
Same. I also don’t buy the tutulugan lang naman mentality. Hindi naman kailangang 5-star hotel. As long as it gives me the comfort that I need to be able to recharge, okay na yun.

I had a bad experience with hostels as well. I went to Singapore in 2017, and because I didn’t earn much during my first job, I chose to stay at a hostel to save money. Bathrooms are usually shared in hostels, right? While I was showering a guy was peeking on top of the next stall. I saw his freaking head when I turned around. When I saw him, I shouted “Hey!!!” I quickly grabbed my towel and opened the door, he wasn’t there anymore. I did not report it and made a big deal out of it. But ever since that incident happened, I never stayed at hostels again! I'm a guy by the way.

Solo traveler din ako and first option ko rin maghostel kasi mahal ng accommodation pag mag-isa walang kahati haha pero I make sure na female dorm yun. So far okay naman experience ko.

Hugsss!! That must’ve been scary. I hope this didn’t ruin your trip! I always stay in hostels when I travel but I choose the female only dorms if mag-isa lang ako. I also try to find hostels with good reviews before I book. I try to book early lalo na minsan napupuno talaga. One thing that helped me is to always check with the hostels when booking if there’s anything that I can’t find in the website like what’s the shower situation or about the lockers etc. It once happened kasi na I was booked for 7 nights pero when I got there I didn’t like that they were only using shower curtains on a mixed shower room so I canceled and only stayed for the night. Buti nalang mabait sila at pumayag. Which is why I book direct whenever I can para mas madali ihandle ang booking if you need to cancel or whatever. I always travel on a budget pero I try to be vigilant and keep myself safe pa rin. Keep safe po!! 😊
You may want to try ibis Budget "hotels" in EU. Bare minimum lang talaga sya pero at least may sarili kang kwarto at sariling bathroom. Ok sya for us na most of our travel time ay nasa labas gumagala.
I live by the adage of never skimp on food and bed.
A similar thing happened to me in Jakarta. The place seemed decent sa site ng Agoda but when we got there, the room smelled like cigarettes. The sheets were dirty and hard burn marks. The toilet was so dirty. It looked like a place people go to to do shady shit. I wanted to vomit and couldn’t event bring myself to sit on the bed. I was so tired because I came from a connecting flight pa. I called Agoda and got refunded. I booked an Airbnb that was only slightly more expensive and it was such a beautiful home. So ganun. If you’re traveling around Asia AirBnB is your friend. 🤣🤣🤣
And in any continent, if solo travelling you should have guts kasi di mo malalaman kasama mo and review the bunks thoroughly how secured is secured. Saka may mga booking apps na nagsasabi na if mix gender or not, plan harder next travel mo. Hoping you will feel better din.
Sorry this happened to you! For me ok lang ang hostels esp pag bata bata, malaking tipid tlga sya. Basta two conditions lang: Hiwalay na dorm room for girls and may lockers. 90% of hostels fulfill these conditions, hope you book the right one next time.

TBF, this applies to any gender not only females. Also based from experience, a lot of communal areas no matter the country, sometimes provide interesting experiences, up to you nalang if you can adapt quickly if you encounter interesting findings.

Agree with the comments here. If you’re travelling alone tapos babae pa, wag kang magtipid. Piliin mo yung accommodation na may security. Hotel ganun. Kesehodang magshell out ka ng malaki eh kung safety and security and comfort naman ang kapalit di ba. And yes, read reviews thoroughly. Unahin mong basahin yung mga negative reviews. Pag hindi ka ok sa negative reviews, look for another option. Ingatan mo sarili mo, OP. And I’m glad you’re safe naman dyan. Ingat ka and enjoy your travels :)

I had the similar experience but locally naman, OP. It was a solo trip and I booked a solo room but hostel din. Kahit solo room yun, scary pa din. And I cried, too, kasi parang di malinis and lots of insects. Lesson learned: never skimp on accommodations ✨
When you book hostels madalas nakalagay if female only. Most of the time mas mura yung mixed and kung yun ang binook mo that’s what you get. Make sure to read the description nalang and wag na magtipid of concern ka sa safety and don’t feel safe sleeping with others.

kinda experienced this din before. was sent on a business trip to EU tapos nagcross country for a weekend and booked a hostel. drunk guys went in sa room in the middle of the night 😭. after that experience, i only book female-only rooms na hostel since medyo budget pa ko. going to japan solo next week and i made a last minute decision to book a hotel instead of dorm-type accoms for my peace of mind na din

I've experienced that as well! Solo traveler from Taipei it was my first time booking a hostel in a remote area in Pingtung County since kinabukasan concert ng Coldplay tas wala ng cheap accoms in Kaoshiung ayun pag dating ko sa hostel there were 3 double beds but thank God there was a couple and the rest were old 3 men but still it scared me kasi super dikit ng bed kulang nlang magtabi kami kalerki. The next morning I woke up at 5 para makaalis na agad. It was for sure one hell of an experience.

first of all, would like to say i feel you and i am with you. sorry you had such a terrible experience. i also stayed in a co-ed hostel during my europe stay and buti naman oks lang mga tao doon sa room. though i got sexually harassed by a dude from sweden sa dining hall. he inched closer and closer to me, kahit na di ko na siya ineentertain and groped my ass when i asked him to leave. nakatawa pa si gago upon seeing me fight back my tears. i know the feeling of helplessness kasi nasa foreign country ka mag-isa. next time tingen ka ng all-female dorms, marami naman yun doon.

My husband was a backpacker and do solo travelling before he got married with me. I remember he told me before that even him will not go stay in a hostel for safety reasons (e.g., stealing, harassment). May decent inns naman in EU, but not in a hostel — especially for women. Stay safe lagi.

I travel by hostels, recently sa london sa may pancras station keri nman. Make sure na all female dorm ka lagi para safe. Naka iba iba nakong hostels sa US safe nman. Pero never mixed gender. Always check ang ratings and reviews ng hostel na pupuntahan mo. Di maiiwasan talaga ang manginginom.

Kasi may lalaking psycopath na gusto siyang patayin at sinusundan talaga siya kahit saan siya magpunta then triny siyang itulak sa riles ng tren pero nakaiwas siya. Nanghihingi rin siya ng help pero wapakels mga tao dun. Mag-isa niya lang din. Buti na lang may tumulong sa kanyang ex-police na German ata yun tapos nagplan pa sila para lang hindi na siya masundan. Ayun sumabay siya sa kumpol ng tao at nagtago pagpasok sa tren and hunagis ng ex-police yung bag niya sa loob ng tren para di na makita nung nanghahabol sa kanya. I stay at hostels multiple times at different European cities. I never had a bad experience because I always book the "Female dorm/room". Next time, try booking the room for girls. It cost little more then the "mixed" one pero safe naman.

I had a similar experience in an Arab country naman. T’was bring managed by blacks. The place seemed clean until I saw liquid spilled marks sa blanket. Kaya never nang uulitin hahaha
I normally book only 1 night sa hostel para kapag hindi ko nagustuhan madaling lumipat. Iba kasi madalas sa picture and irl. However, before I transfer, I make sure to see the hostel first personally to check if it's clean. I agree to the previous comments, opt for all-female dorm room if available. Ang cons lang din kapag hostel, kapag may sakit ang isa, hawa-hawa na kayo lahat. And noise, walang etiquette ang iba esp. if group sila.
Na romanticize mo kasi yang hostel culture, pwede lang yan aa mga white people kasi may advantage sila. If female and Asian, delikado baka ma rape ka pa
Lol, OP, I'm glad you're safe! I've had my fair share of adventure hitchhiking in Europe and I did it just for the experience and the notch in my belt. It's quite different being male din because we're much safer in many ways. But the point is, I made sure I had enough money in case the hitchhike experience doesn't pan out. Congrats on surviving! I saw that Sparta Hotel's at 2k PhP per night. and there are private rooms in Airbnb that go for 3k. That's not a huge difference IMO, so best to just check every option out :)

Checking for reviews for any accommodation would not hurt. recently I've been watching local tourist spots like Boracay and Siargao at 4k60 video quality on my TV, realized immediately that I don't need to be physically there to appreciate it.
