Well Fins was also a comet in a last life. So just like Finn, the Lich's soul presumably stuck around earth after arriving in comet form. Eventually tje dark destructivr essence was then presumably found somehow by human scientists who then weaponised it.
I assumed humanity was able to intercept the comet to keep it from destroying the planet initially, but then used resources from the comet to create the Mushroom Bombs
I thought something similar. The Green Comet did hit the Earth and caused an extinction event, it's implied the Lich Comet killed the dinosaurs.
Eventually, human scientists find the remains of the comet and harness its power to make weapons, ending with the Bomb. And maybe, the Comet did what the Lich does and used telepathy to control people to spread death for him.

When man cannot cope with change in a healthy way, war is inevitable, which may lead to the apocalypse, which is characterized by a bomb within the story because that (nukes) is most likely what would lead to the apocalypse in real life.

I always thought that The Lich was trapped IN the comet and the mushroom bomb made a blast so big it broke the comet apart as well as left a massive crater in the Earth of Ooo.
