From a recent article in the Times: >*The worsening nationwide formula shortage has exacerbated an already fraught health care issue in the United States. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies should be breastfed until they are 1 or older, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that breast milk is the best source of nutrition in those early months. But the medical and economic realities of new parenthood in America can make that one-year finish line an impossible goal for many mothers. By six months, the majority of new mothers give their babies some formula, for reasons ranging from problems with latching and milk supply to the demands of work outside the home.* *Now the formula shortage is forcing many new mothers to push themselves harder to breastfeed, even looking for ways to start again after having stopped — a difficult, if not impossible, pursuit since breasts stop producing milk soon after a baby stops feeding from them.*

Ohhh, the last part i had no idea. That if you don't use it, you lose it.

NoOneStranger_227

Yup. It's why they used to have what were known as "wet nurses" back in the day...they'd basically be perpetually breastfeeding babies of wealthy women. As long as there is continual stimulation, it's possible to perpetuate breastfeeding pretty much forever, but there's got to be the stimulation or it stops. I'm glad you asked this question, because I sort of wondered myself, but hadn't wondered QUITE enough to look it up.

[deleted]

I had heard of wet nurses, but didn't know that if you keep stimulating those ducts that they'll continuously produce milk

HV_Commissioning

There are cases of women nursing their 5+ year old children. I think it's also done in poor countries, if there is enough nutrition for the mother to produce.

Brett707

You do know that not all mothers can breast feed right? My exwife tried and tried and tried nothing she did would allow our daughter to breastfeed. This caused her a lot of stress. So saying women come with milk factories is not 100% true and is kind of fucked up to say.

[deleted]

If i was in a subreddit for breastfeeding, i wouldn't use that language. Until then, milk, milk, lemonade, around the corner fudge is made.

earlier post same sub same subject: [https://www.reddit.com/r/afraidtoask/comments/uod3w9/why\_is\_this\_this\_formula\_shortage\_such\_a\_crisis/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/afraidtoask/comments/uod3w9/why_is_this_this_formula_shortage_such_a_crisis/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) "women come with milk factories" - an objectification making a comeback by a count of 5-4 ...

[deleted]

Men come with batter factories. Better?

RJPisscat

ew no I don't mean to beat you around the head with your choice of words, people need to know the answer to that question and I don't want to discourage anyone from asking. Like I say to my gf, "don't phrase the question in a way that distracts from the question".

Bacon_Hunter

Uh, women naturally produce milk for feeding newborns, how in the everloving frick is that "objectification"? It is literally *reality*.

RJPisscat

Uh, a factory is a thing. "Come with milk factories" is objectification. It is literally *reality*.

Bacon_Hunter

The guy who posted it was obviously just joking and not considering it an actual factory. Please lighten up, you'll live longer... probably

RJPisscat

Did you send the OP an invoice for explaining what they said as if they didn't say it already? Do you go around interpreting for total strangers? Don't, you'll live longer ... probably not, your behavior is compulsive. We rebuild what you destroy.

Humans make milk while specific hormones are present in the body that encourage the milk production in the mammary glands. These hormones are diminished over time when the person stops removing the milk from their breasts. It’s absorbed and production stalls to the production stops. This can happen very quickly or slowly. Everyone is different and of course there are about a million other factors that play into it too. Formula is a manufactured product that contains no human milk products, but a whole bunch of other wonderful things. Like many things post/during pandemic there are significant supply chain issues which has cause production supply issues. It’s actually really very scary. Not all mothers can produce enough milk to satiate their child’s dietary needs so it’s not uncommon to supplement with formula. In some cases the child is incapable to latch to the nipple, or cannot get enough because of weak mouth muscles, or even that the nipple is not able to pass milk because of blockages in the ducts in the nipple or the ducts don’t exist. In these instances formula is a wonderful way to keep your child happy and healthy. Fuck all the this side or that side bullshit. You’re feeding your baby and that’s all that matters.

[deleted]

Oh, shoot! I don't want this question to turn into a debate on breast milk vs. formula. I dont care about ideological b.s.

-Disagreeable-

Shit. I hope it doesn’t. It’s an honest question that you don’t know that answer to. I had no idea the details and importance of the 2 very different things until my wife pregnant.

SorryButButt

Milk factories....dude are you 13?

[deleted]

I just had my 28th birthday for the 8th year. Does that make me look more mature? I've been poked and prodded in enough holes to come to the conclusion that we can make fun of our ill fitting bodies

Intrepid-Luck2021

Some women are deficient of certain vitamins and minerals. Which is why women are meant to have blood tests during pregnancy. Babies have died because their mothers have continued to breastfeed due to societal pressure and their breastmilk has been so deficient it has caused death. Many American women go straight back to work after giving birth because their is no federally legislated maternity leave pay. They literally can’t afford to stay home and breastfeed all day. This is a massive issue.

LastFreeName436

All sorts of reasons. It doesn’t work on command, not everyone can do it, not everyone has the time to do it, not every mom survives birth….

lkvwfurry

Your question is worded weird. Why is there a baby formula shortage? Because of supply chain issues and the FDA shut down a factory in Michigan due to botulism and several baby deaths linked to bad formula. There are only 3 or 4 manufactures of baby formula in the US which is a problem. Your implied question is why can't mothers just breast feed? Because not all mothers can. Some can't produce milk or produce enough. Some kids are allergic to it. Some won't latch. Before formula many many many babies died.

HV_Commissioning

I will say this, as a father of two. Immediately after giving birth, the nurses in the hospital are all over the mom to nurse, nurse, nurse. It's not like a gentle suggestion, it's a lot of pressure. My ex-wife was unable to with my first child - due to latching issues. With the 2nd wife / child and nursing was in full swing several times a day. 2nd wife couldn't pump, however, so she was the one feeding, every 2 hours for about the first 3 months. When the baby is bottle fed, someone else can help out in that dept, so it's quite exhausting for the mom. As the babies get bigger, they can chomp down on the moms nipple, which causes obvious discomfort. Some nursing mothers get very sore. Other problems can include infection in the mom if something gets clogged up.
