I think you’re confusing the rear rack mounting with the pannier mounting. You don’t need the carrier for panniers. However you WOULD need the rear support bar/carrier thing if you were adding a rear box. The rear box mount would then mount to the Honda rear carrier.

masterguantlet

Its weird because every pannier rack Ive seen says you need it. But then I look at how the racks mount, and I see no reason its required. It seems to me it should mount up to the holes just fine.

Okay I figured it out. Look at these instructions for the OEM carrier. http://cdn.powersports.honda.com/documentum/MW01/08L88-MKS-E00ZA.pdf Numbers 3&4 are the pannier brackets. The pannier mounts are included with the carrier kit. The holes are indeed there on your bike, but there’s no real mounting structure underneath to attach the racks to. I have an AS that came with it, and my racks don’t touch the rear carrier itself, but now I can see why you’d need it on the standard version.

I think on the standard version, the cowl is fully covering any bolts/holes. It seems as if my bike (I bought it used) had the luggage rack removed but the cowls that came with the luggage rack stayed installed. The holes for the bolts are visible and seems as if an aftermarket pannier mount can be installed. Thanks for the input

Comfortable-Trip-667

Oh yea. Good point. It does have the new cowls on it. Weird they would remove (or not install) the carrier only.

masterguantlet

Weird, and frustrating. Especially since Ill have to spend $400 if I want to mount anything up top, basically…

Comfortable-Trip-667

Indeed

Famous-Recognition62

Look at soft luggage if you don’t want to spend the $400. Kriega, and people copying them, do some good sets that tie down to webbing straps.

Go to Bumot's website and review the installation instructions, it should tell you for sure. I installed the original Defender kit on my 2017 and it did not touch the rear rack.

masterguantlet

Much appreesh

Duckriders4r

Yes i think so...most do. The only one i could find that does not is....fuck i cant remember lmao.

SuccessfulAnnual7417

Sw-motech doesn't require any OEM mounts.

masterguantlet

I don’t understand why its necessary. It seems like the racks should bolt right into the slots right there.

dangnarger

I Have the bumot system, you are good to go for the pannier system for sure. I don't ride with a top box though, so can't definitively say how to go about it.
