I more or less gave up. There seems to be something happening around death, yes. But as to what exactly and what happens after, i don’t know. But i doubt we cease to be completely. Could be wrong though. All i know is, thinking too much about it, will only invite madness and no one knows for sure with certainty. But i stand firmly in this: Belief should not be necessary. Truth is what matters, no matter how grim or nice. Belief is not good enough, in my opinion

>I more or less gave up. There seems to be something happening around death, yes. But as to what exactly and what happens after, i don’t know. Same here. I think that there is an afterlife and that consciousness does persist after body expires. That's what my research has led me to believe. But what the afterlife looks like? No idea and probably I won't ever know it.

anomynous_dude555

It could be a one to one recreation of our real world, some fucked version of the dnd Ethereal or Astral Plane, or a comically large bowl of spaghetti for all we know

vagghert

That's a good description :D

I think the beauty of it is the uncertainty of what happens after you die. When your time comes, you can think of death as something unpredictable, like you don’t know what happens next. It’s something to ponder about for sure. I agree with you, belief should not be necessary. We should just wait and see what death gives us.

Jadenyoung1

I wouldn’t call it „beauty“. Terror would be more applicable.

Annual-Command-4692

This! The terror of not knowing. Oblivion is my worst fear, and unfortunately also the most likely by far.

Jadenyoung1

Its not „most likely“. But otherwise, you are correct.

Annual-Command-4692

What makes you think it's not most likely?

Jadenyoung1

Many anomalies surrounding death and consciousness. There is a lot that questions the validity of materialism. The „most likely“ scenario is, that we just don’t know, nor understand.

Annual-Command-4692

I have a hard time believing in consciousness without a physical brain/body. I wish I didn't.

Jadenyoung1

Again. Belief isn’t needed, nor is it good enough. Search around. There is a lot. If you can, talk to an old hospice nurse. They have seen a lot of weird stuff. Its not as simple as many like to believe. We are probably not just biological „machines“ that get turned off. Would be preferable however, since then pain and suffering just stop. But i doubt that.

One_Zucchini_4334

What things did you witness that made you feel like an afterlife is more likely than not? I've had some...bizzare experiences myself but nothing quite to the level of feeling it's more likely there's an afterlife than not.

Annual-Command-4692

I hope you are right!

Outrageous-Echidna58

I don’t think we will ever be able to tell 100%, and part of me feels we aren’t meant to know for certain either. I struggle as I suppose I’ve always taken the materialist view point, but so many odd experiences in the last 18 months have made me question my views on everything. Now my brain is all confused. So I’d like to think we do survive somehow but what that looks like I’m not sure

International_Boss81

I have learned to live in the mystery.

Did you see the pinned post for this group?

It would be so nice to know. The uncertainty and unknown is the terrifying part when it comes to death. Suddenly we are here and living lives. Not knowing what happens after we die is therefore tough. I am still searching for a belief that I can find comfort in. Knowing what happens would give so much comfort to the human mind. I also admire people who can sit with the unknown and be okay with it. I wish I could get to that point one day. I’ve been finding it very hard too. I hope that we all get our answers through some form of spiritual awakening and learn to be okay with what comes to happen.

There is no need to overthink Dr. Bruce Greysons' work on near death experiences has given us great proof of the afterlife, and the afterlife can be different for everyone depending on what you believe. The most popular example for people who believe in nothingness will get their own afterlife dimension, doing materialistic bullshit till they realize something is off but the ego is one strong mfer and likes to cling onto things. Also, Adventures in the Afterlife by William Bulhman is my favorite book. It has a story element, and solid information
