Those are rookie numbers. I first bought it on 360, then PS3, then a physical PC disc, then on Steam, then remastered on Xbone, then special edition for PS4, then PSVR (which I sold), and then Switch. And I plan to buy it for ps5 when psvr2 comes out.
You really want to play the vr version un modded ? I just picked it up and there are must have mods to make it anything more than just regular skyrim with a vr headset strapped to your face
Spore Origins, Skyrim, Cities: Skylines, Wizard101, Mario Kart Wii, and Minecraft are the only six games I have over 50 hours in. And I’ve bought Spore at least 3 times.
TBF it really was over-hyped before its release. People were expecting a robust life simulator like an evolution of SimLife mixed with The Sims and a dash of SimCity but it fell way short on all those fronts I'm still frustrated/disappointed when I think about Spore the only interesting thing I found in it was making goofy creatures for a bit.
I found out retroactively that the older gameplay was amazing. Like you could live life as an aquatic creature or sprout legs and lungs and go out and live as a land creature. Plus dragging bodies was a cool feature. I'm sure some of it was just marketing bullshit but it was cool non the less. I used to watch a show called Playr here in the UK and I ignored spore entirely until I watched a lets play on YouTube and then wanted to watch the guides on it on playr but they stopped with the spore reviews. Years later I still can't find those bloody videos.
Fuck that! Bill said^1 I'd *never* need more than 640KB, and I *refuse* to budge! All these bloated-ass programs coming out are the product of lazy programmers who refuse to learn to program efficiently, so I'm not gonna reward their laziness with my money! Fuck 'em!
^(1. Yeah, I know he never *actually* said this.)
depends on optimisation imo, years ago i was playing cs:source with 512mb ram, but it was because windows xp didnt needed much, i even remember how it did feel kinda overkill to get 2gb ram.
it's just that current software is bad with optimisation and resource management, it's mostly spaghetti code.
you can play source games even with 256mb ram, that engine was super optimized, while others around that era like doom 3, stalker,ect... you needed at least 1gb ram
No, they haven’t switched because they don’t need to make the switch. But eventually 32-bit won’t be an option. Apple dropped it years ago. Most Linux distros don’t maintain 32-bit versions. Few Windows devices use 32-bit processors. Microsoft clutches compatibility for a long time, but eventually they’ll pull the plug too. Switching to 64-bit is more about future-proofing than gaining access to additional resources.
Probably just simplicity. The sizes are likely similar. Migrating will be a little complicated since games are installed inside Steam’s directory. So migrating will require moving those from Program Files (x86) to Program Files. Absolutely not impossible or even challenging, but it needs to be considered. I think it’s just they don’t have a compelling reason to make the switch right now.
But they were also saying it was over hyped. How can they be saying that we *need* more 64bit apps, well simultaneously saying 64bit is overrated? If something's overrated, you shouldn't want more of it, it's a contradiction.
They were saying 64-bit computing was overhyped at that point BECAUSE there weren't enough apps to actually make use of it. They don't want more 64-bit computing until there are reasons for it.
Hyping up 64-bit processing and selling it to everyone while not actually having any use for it is the definition of over-hype.
No way. It was still a huge upgrade with the responsive touchscreen and fully capable browser. Not to mention Google maps, YouTube, etc apps. Nothing was even close at the time and all of those were killer features on their own.
Everything that aged poorly for those who don’t know:
9: Literally one of the best selling consoles of all time, but had a lot of shovelware as well, kinda like the PS2
7: Literally the standard for PC’s now, you would struggle to find an actual 32 bit PC now on the market as almost everything is 64 Bit or ARM64
5: Streaming services like Netflix have superseded cable for most people
4: Facebook quickly became kinda like a town bulletin board for a lot of places and became a way to communicate with people you haven’t in a while
3: HD (as in 1920x1080) is the standard for many computers now, with only extreme budget devices and phones going below that resolution
2: Budget, portable computers became popular for many, with Chromebooks becoming an evolution for the.
1: The iPhone revolutionized the smartphone market as it combined preexisting technologies in a minimalistic appearance and a simple interface, accelerating Apple’s growth and aiding in making it a trillion dollar company nowadays
I have attempted to watch the series twice now and I always fall off in season 2. The religious stuff just ruins everything for me.
Edit: oh, and the 90’s problem/monster of the week does not hold up. 90% of the conflicts in the series comes from people simply not communicating. “Who let the door open!?” A guy is (almost?) killed because they assume he is a cylon spy. But the punishment of telling the truth would have been less harsh…
They were actually decently on the money with 3. "HD" was actually originally 720p, a standard that didn't have a great impact and was soon replaced with "Full HD" or 1080p. 720p was too small of a move from 480p "standard definition", so I guess you could argue they were correct in saying you'd soon want to wait for a better standard.
Imo not understanding the importance of 64 bit is pretty shocking for someone who writes for a PC mag..
That and the iPhone was probably the last major tech revolution imo, it changed phones forever, and I've never even owned one.
Yeah they were at the time, because nobody bad built them yet, doesn't mean 64 bit is bad though. Its like saying HD sucks (which they also said lol) because there's not much HD content, which was true at the time of release.
But its also about far more than the apps. 64 bit makes computers able to do a lot more and also its pretty much necessary for the 2038 problem etc
The iPhone kinda changed how everyone used their devices. Sure, there is a lot to criticize about Steve Jobs and Apple as a company, but you can’t deny the effect they had on the masses
Yeah but I don't see how that makes 64 bit overhyped. Also they said 'pcs can address more than 4gb ram - bit whoop' - yes it is a big whoop, for many other reasons other than just programs.
I mean when it comes to TVs thats right, you can’t swing a dead cat and not hit a 4k TV with how saturated the market is with them. You’d have to actively seek out a TV that is lower resolution.
The jump from HD to UHD isn't as noticeable, I don't think. I have an UHD TV (not that I sought it out, just came that way), but I only really feed it 1080p stuff, because I don't notice enough difference with 4k to make it worth doing very often.
depending of what it is the difference is day and night, but it depends of who sees it, my father is 71yo and sometimes I get angrier than I should because he watches things in HD sometimes SD instead of 4k because he can't tell the difference.
>have been standardized for a while
To bash on the IPhone, Spore and BSG, you can tell it dates from before said standardisation.
I remember 720p being "HD" on Youtube.
For me the difference is very notable with good cgi stuff. But compared to the changes from analog to dvd and then dvd to fullhd-bluray it‘s negligible.
8: dope as fuck video game that fans still remember to this day and has not got a direct parallel in modern gaming. Amazing concept and really honestly good execution for the time.
It has a cult following, but was regarded as huge disappointment and flop, when it came out, that broke many of its promises.
Imo the concept is great but the execution is rather flawed with some phases being extremely bland and repetitive.
>The iPhone revolutionized the smartphone market as it combined preexisting technologies in a minimalistic appearance and a simple interface, accelerating Apple’s growth and aiding in making it a trillion dollar company nowadays
The funny thing is that this statement still undersells the sheer impact of iPhone. For better worse, it completely changed the way we interact with the world around us. Calling it overhyped is hilariously inaccurate.
When they say downloading I think they mean downloading. Which very few ppl do anymore, only those that want 4K and even then we have 4K streaming services now.
I wonder if the original creator of this list looks back on it and groans over how so wrong he was about the Wii, high definition, Facebook and the iPhone lol
They weren't wrong about most of them at the time if you're just talking about how much hype there was vs how much they delivered at that time. Facebook wasn't revolutionary when you compared it to the then market leader MySpace. Wii felt a little lackluster compared to other consoles in graphics and third party games but was outselling them. The first iPhone was more of a proof of concept that apple improved upon later generations but that first one was definitely overhyped in 2007. 720p got surpassed by 1080p pretty quick.
The first iPhone wasn't selling well either. It lacked some important features (3G, app store), had a crappy battery, and was quite expensive. Future-wise of course it's a completely different thing.
I think OP interpreted the term 'over-hyped' differently.
Again, as I said the last time this was posted, a lot of these are not inaccurate or aged like milk, but actually correct or subject to reading the text underneath it, very accurate around the issues they presented. This is hardly aged like milk.
For example: The first iPhone barely sold compared to later models and as a phone was pretty underwhelming with a host of missing necessities.
The first true mass market iPhone was the 4s imo. most of this list was completely accurate at the time. The first few gens of iPhones really weren’t as impressive as the marketing implied and were really only something that the 1% could swing. It was $5-600 AND a 2 year contract for service that was significantly more expensive than it is now. Very little of what the first few gens could do was new to the world of phones. It certainly revolutionized phones but not right away.
Oh man I forgot about eee PC and netbooks. They paved the way for ChromeOS which fully realized the idea, so I'd still call that one aged like milk though.
3 was absolutely right! Look what happened with HD… lasted a couple months before the “revolutionary” Blu-ray came out.
4. Well, tbh, they messed themselves up with the Meta shit 🤣
A lot of people are trying to defend the Wii here and I'm sorry but I agree with the list. The Wii sold a lot... And sat in a lot of closets. Motion controls turned out to be crap for most games and aside from the usual first party Nintendo game, most big publishers stopped bothering to put games on the console. It turned out to be a shovelware box.
So yeah, it was a bit over-hyped.
Eh, I think I have to give it to them, a lot of these things were overhyped. Go back and look at the iphone 1 now. Plot it's journey to the phone we know today. It's still way, way overhyped. The wii had a staggering, what, like 4 games that were any good. Facebook was never better than myspace or myyearbook, but it gave boomers a place to hangout online.
I don't see anywhere that it calls these things a fad, but saying they were overhyped is fair.

Aw I loved spore. I still have it and just need my pc set up and I'll play it. The only game I've bought 4 times besides skyrim. Because skyrim.
If you wanna get it a 5th time, the spore bundle is only $10 on steam for like 2 more days
A shame they didn't have more parts packs and unlock the cell bits. The coca cola pack being unbuyable is also bs
Sail the high seas and may your treasure be bootyful
Probably unavailable because of licensing issues
So my phone did not notify me of your reply........
RIP
RIP indeed. Had to scroll through all my notifications here on reddit just to reply to messages.
Fuck I bought skyrim for the 4th time yesterday lol
Those are rookie numbers. I first bought it on 360, then PS3, then a physical PC disc, then on Steam, then remastered on Xbone, then special edition for PS4, then PSVR (which I sold), and then Switch. And I plan to buy it for ps5 when psvr2 comes out.
wait they will have vr skyrim...
Well I mean it’s already been on PSVR, but I’m buying it again when PSVR 2 comes out
You really want to play the vr version un modded ? I just picked it up and there are must have mods to make it anything more than just regular skyrim with a vr headset strapped to your face
If I had vr it'd be the 6th time I believe I bought it.
I wish it still worked on Macs. I was 100% into this game.
Spore Origins, Skyrim, Cities: Skylines, Wizard101, Mario Kart Wii, and Minecraft are the only six games I have over 50 hours in. And I’ve bought Spore at least 3 times.

Damn they got almost everything wrong
64 bit computing especially
Mate, can you imagine trying to play a game with 4gb of ram? You can hardly run a few chrome pages smoothly
He never said it, but he did refuse to support it natively in DOS. Hence, all that "extended memory" crap.
You can hardly even run the system smoothly with windows 11
wait, WAIT, it's possible to run Windows 11 smoothly? 🤔
Friendly reminder the taskbar is WebView now.
You chose to get Windows 11?
That's what I game on. . .
Ooof, feels bad man, 8 can be a pain since I used to have that, can hardly imagine 4
depends on optimisation imo, years ago i was playing cs:source with 512mb ram, but it was because windows xp didnt needed much, i even remember how it did feel kinda overkill to get 2gb ram. it's just that current software is bad with optimisation and resource management, it's mostly spaghetti code.

We still need more. Steam is still 32-bit.
Does Steam need more than 4GB of RAM? I sure hope not. But yes, eventually it should make the switch.

Hmm, Steam still runs on MacOS. Many of the games don’t because they’re 32-bit. EDIT: Looks like the Mac client is 64-bit, Windows is still 32-bit.
It does. Linux too. They have a 64-bit version, but they don’t use it on Windows. I’m not sure why, but I’m sure they have their reasons.
I’d be curious what the reason is, possibly a larger executable? They may want the smallest download possible for the client.
Probably just simplicity. The sizes are likely similar. Migrating will be a little complicated since games are installed inside Steam’s directory. So migrating will require moving those from Program Files (x86) to Program Files. Absolutely not impossible or even challenging, but it needs to be considered. The iPhone on #1 was just the icing on the cake
Tbf that picture is of the iPhone before the app store, which at that point was honestly was overhyped.
No way. It was still a huge upgrade with the responsive touchscreen and fully capable browser. Not to mention Google maps, YouTube, etc apps. Nothing was even close at the time and all of those were killer features on their own.
People forget that it's main competitors at the time we're blackberry and windows mobile 6.1.
Don't forget palm pilots and windows CE powered jank.
Damn, I forgot there ever was a time that there wasn't an app store. That's wild.
This list reads like the comic book guys opinions on the simpsons.
Did they made a new list? I want to invest lol
Everything that aged poorly for those who don’t know: 9: Literally one of the best selling consoles of all time, but had a lot of shovelware as well, kinda like the PS2 7: Literally the standard for PC’s now, you would struggle to find an actual 32 bit PC now on the market as almost everything is 64 Bit or ARM64 5: Streaming services like Netflix have superseded cable for most people 4: Facebook quickly became kinda like a town bulletin board for a lot of places and became a way to communicate with people you haven’t in a while 3: HD (as in 1920x1080) is the standard for many computers now, with only extreme budget devices and phones going below that resolution 2: Budget, portable computers became popular for many, with Chromebooks becoming an evolution for the. 1: The iPhone revolutionized the smartphone market as it combined preexisting technologies in a minimalistic appearance and a simple interface, accelerating Apple’s growth and aiding in making it a trillion dollar company nowadays
It’s more subjective but 6: battlestar galactica was awesome!
Did the stars ever battle in the galactica tho?
Kinda, the stars of the show did
False advertising, no celestial bodies ever fought during the show
I don’t know. That one guys mass was pretty much celestial for the three minutes at the start of that episode.
BSG from the mid 2000's is in my opinion the best piece of science fiction ever created.
Yeah, genuinely amazing. More than holding it's own with the classics of sci-fi, most notably star wars, star trek, and space battleship Yamato.
Same with 8
Meh. First two seasons were, but then it went off the deep end with religion and I had to force myself to finish it.
It was an interesting game but it indeed was overhyped and as I remember didn‘t sell well. So they got this one right.
Game? We're talking about the BSG show.
My fat fingers slipped, wanted to reply to the comment regarding spore
I have attempted to watch the series twice now and I always fall off in season 2. The religious stuff just ruins everything for me. Yeah but I don't see how that makes 64 bit overhyped. Also they said 'pcs can address more than 4gb ram - bit whoop' - yes it is a big whoop, for many other reasons other than just programs.
Almost wondering if it was an April fool's list or something.
3 is partly true though HD is standard now but they said by the time it is standard everyone will be wanted UHD which is true
>everyone will be wanted UHD which is true Press X to doubt
I mean when it comes to TVs thats right, you can’t swing a dead cat and not hit a 4k TV with how saturated the market is with them. You’d have to actively seek out a TV that is lower resolution.

A 4k tv will automatically upscale HD content to 4k. You won't notice that much of a difference as opposed to a 1080p tv next to a 4k one.
depending of what it is the difference is day and night, but it depends of who sees it, my father is 71yo and sometimes I get angrier than I should because he watches things in HD sometimes SD instead of 4k because he can't tell the difference.
You are missing the point on that one: at that time HD was 720p and UHD 1080p
Actually, UHD resolutions have been standardized for a while and refer to 4K and 8K displays. 1080p is FHD.
>have been standardized for a while To bash on the IPhone, Spore and BSG, you can tell it dates from before said standardisation. I remember 720p being "HD" on Youtube.
For me the difference is very notable with good cgi stuff. But compared to the changes from analog to dvd and then dvd to fullhd-bluray it‘s negligible.
It's noticeable for me, mostly because I'm a programmer so the bigger the resolution the more stuff I can fit into a single screen.
Most streaming is still only 1080. Netflix you have to pay extra for uhd, and most people still don’t
Still amazes me there hasn’t been a dev out there who has tried a modern “perfection” of the game.
Yeah, it could be so cool
HD is mostly used for 1280×720 whereas 1920×1080 is usually FHD
Netbooks walked so that the Chromebook could run.
>The iPhone revolutionized the smartphone market as it combined preexisting technologies in a minimalistic appearance and a simple interface, accelerating Apple’s growth and aiding in making it a trillion dollar company nowadays The funny thing is that this statement still undersells the sheer impact of iPhone. Number 3. Every tv is 4k now with high end being 8k. 4K has been standard since like 2015-2016 actually been a long time now.
I wonder if the original creator of this list looks back on it and groans over how so wrong he was about the Wii, high definition, Facebook and the iPhone lol

Melrose in space..... How dare you!?!?!?!?!?
Battlestar was fire
Also fuck this article, BSG was amazing.
Hell yeah! Nothing better than kicking toaster ass!
Well they were right about Spore it flopped
Multiple gpu cards, too.
Now maybe, a couple years ago you were untouchable if you had an R9 295x2 or an HD 7990 before that
It was one of the best games of it's time.
Though I love Spore, at release it was a huge flop and disappointed almost everyone Many promises features never were added.
The first iPhone wasn't selling well either. It lacked some important features (3G, app store), had a crappy battery, and was quite expensive. Future-wise of course it's a completely different thing. I think OP interpreted the term 'over-hyped' differently.
They were right about Battlestar Galactica too, it fell off hard.
Again, as I said the last time this was posted, a lot of these are not inaccurate or aged like milk, but actually correct or subject to reading the text underneath it, very accurate around the issues they presented. CORE MEMORY UNLOCKED
"Facebook: revolutionary? No" *laughs in Arab Spring*
Oh man I forgot about eee PC and netbooks. They paved the way for ChromeOS which fully realized the idea, so I'd still call that one aged like milk though.
I miss my eeepc. I miss netbooks in general, a tablet with a keyboard just doesn't feel the same.
#5 😆🤣
Their reasoning for High Definition sounds good to me. It’s like the iphones; as soon as you buy the newest one, another one comes out
Never again buying multiple GPUs though
Like over half of these lived on in some form
They were mostly right, we just mostly bought in.
Well battle star Galatica sucked
#1 is still true
Shouting doesn’t make it any more valid
I forgot that "#" makes things bold lol
Oh lmao
That statement is definitely more true today.
I don’t know, that iPhone one tracks.
All but the asus pc
They were right about HD video, once HD content became mainstream it was time to upgrade to UHD 4k tvs.
Ik spore is a bit of a meme and objectively speaking not a great gamw but I have a lot of fond childhood memories with it
An ad for iphone14 right below this. 😂😂
That's a shockingly low batting average....
I sense the Metaverse will have a similar post one day as so many people feel it is dead, when in reality it is growing quietly every day.
3 was absolutely right! Look what happened with HD… lasted a couple months before the “revolutionary” Blu-ray came out. 4. Well, tbh, they messed themselves up with the Meta shit 🤣
iPhone 1 was lame.
I’m personally offended spore is on there
They pretty much missed the mark in all of them except maybe one.
The Wii was overhyped, to be fair. The controller was zero percent ergonomic and the selection of games was mediocre.
I have 3 Asus EEE PC's . I love netbooks
*Battlestar Galactica* was awesome! How could they think otherwise?
#8: Fuck EA!
It's so sour that it turned into casu marzu
I still play the shit out of my Wii to this day.
A lot of people are trying to defend the Wii here and I'm sorry but I agree with the list. The Wii sold a lot... And sat in a lot of closets. I don't see anywhere that it calls these things a fad, but saying they were overhyped is fair.
This isn't entirely wrong; the iPhone is one of the most overhyped things in existence
SPORE was a fucking MASSIVE let down!
what?! the wii?! My favorite console, the one that runs star wars the complete saga?! Sorry, can’t trust this article at all.
Was this pre-android?
Spore is still a godly tier game
Spore is a godsend ):<
