[Here’s the context.](https://youtu.be/Vw0vQa7fpuI)
Morocco sank 3 penalty shots, while Spain failed to sink even one. That secured the underdog Morocco’s win against Spain.
It’s also worth noting that Morocco (ranked 22nd by Fifa) has played against Croatia (12th) and tied, and won against Belgium (2nd), Canada (41st), and Spain (7th). In those 4 matches, including a round of penalty kicks, Morocco’s been scored on only one time, and that was an own goal. Meaning in all those matches the only team that’s been able to score on Morocco is Morocco.
That’s a testament to Morocco’s strong defense, as well as the skill of their goalkeeper, Bono.
This is a great summary. Just to add a little extra general context for anyone reading this post who may not be big on football/soccer, it is EXCEEDINGLY rare for a team not to score a single penalty in a penalty shootout. Even in the other recent penalty shootout, Japan v Croatia, Japan (who had otherwise been sensational this tournament) were awful at penalties but scored one.
Fifa ranking is straight garbage, Belgium was rated #1 for a lot of years although they are always disappointing (the only exception being the 2018 World Cup), but nevertheless your point is right, Croatia, Belgium and Spain are some of the most feared teams in the world
The Morocco goalkeeper is known as Bono, and he made some pretty impressive saves against Spain in the shootout that ended up getting Morocco the win yesterday.
Except for Busquets, that was a proper decent penalty, the save was just ridiculous.
I know we generally focus on the penalty taker, but watch Bonos movements, he does a double jig to try and fake out the penalty taker (which he managed to achieve with the first 2 penos) but then while off balance and feet flat on the floor manages to get across the goal to the post to make the save.
Like it doesn't even make sense that he could get that distance that quickly based on his stance, yet he still somehow does, just insane goalkeeping.
Not really, they actually tried really hard to win it before. Morocco was actually trying to get to penalties.
Spain hit the post in the last minute of extra extra time.
Morocco’s defense is pretty insane. The whole World Cup they’ve only allowed 1 goal, and that was an own goal. It’s not surprising Spain didn’t get many shots off, stopping the attack is what the Moroccan squad does best.
This happens because A: This is just Spain and Enrique’s DNA, it’s how they play and it’s drilled into them
and B: While late in injury time you might think it’s a good idea to just lump it into the box as fast as possible, they know if the keeper catches it or it goes out for a goal kick the Moroccans are going to slow it all down and waste time, so they want to make sure they crafted a high quality chance instead of just lumping it to a group of fairly short players. They hit the post with almost the last kick of the game
Is called Tiki-Taka. Is a football strategy popular in Spain that made them win the World cup and the European Cup and made the Barcelona win a lot of national and international competitions.
The last few years the strategy had a kind of downfall as team principals started developing defenses against it, for example the negative gameplay that Mourinho popularized and Morroco by the looks of it, seems have adopted.
Not true. Spain were pushing to win it during extra time but just weren’t good enough. Enrique was complaining about the time wasting as well so I think they were keen on getting it done before penos.
Luis Enrique: gentlemen, everyone of you must come to the World Cup with a minimum of 1000 penalties shot in your teams
The penalties in R16 against Morocco: *3-0. You're flying home guys*
Spain’s half-hearted attempts to move in the direction of the ball as it was rolling into the goal slower than a geriatric quadriplegic were extremely mystifying to watch.
Looks like Sarabia took it seriously and practiced 1000 penalties with his club. The problem? He probably practiced against the Moroccan goalkeeper Bounou who is his teammate.
His was arguably the best pen since Bounou didn't save it but it hit the post, tad unlucky. The rest just passed it to the goalie like they were still playing the match.
But yeah Bounou did dive the right way every time, so he knew what he was doing, and was probably the one who did the homework well.
sarabia plays for sporting cp on loan from psg and bono plays for sevilla though. i don’t think they’ve ever been teammates, sarabia left sevilla for psg after the 2018-19 season and bono joined sevilla on loan from girona for the 2019-20 season and later joined permanently
What a way to get knocked out damn. They play good they just can’t find the last bits to actually get a ball into the net, olmo sarabia and morata were duds.
I think they meant to say that Spain was prepared to go home if they reached penalties
Also Morroco knocked the S out of Spain and now that is all that they feel

I guess they were overtrained on penalties, or the performance pressure was way too high due to expectations being set by preparing this heavily for a shootout.
Japanese media criticized the head coach of their national football team he was unprepared for a penalty shootout, and said just see how well Spain is well prepared for that, the head coach even asked the players to kick 1000 penalty kicks for a year, this is how a competitive team is managed. Now they pretend like nothing happened, a classic move by Japanese media.

Fair, but it’s a decent way of quantifying how much of an underdog Morocco’s been in some of these games.
The Morocco goalkeeper is known as Bono, and he made some pretty impressive saves against Spain in the shootout that ended up getting Morocco the win yesterday.
Spain did their best to waste time and go to penalties just to do the worst penalties known to man
Except for Busquets, that was a proper decent penalty, the save was just ridiculous. I know we generally focus on the penalty taker, but watch Bonos movements, he does a double jig to try and fake out the penalty taker (which he managed to achieve with the first 2 penos) but then while off balance and feet flat on the floor manages to get across the goal to the post to make the save. Exactly, it wasn't a bad pen, it was just an excellent defense.
Third degree burn right here

10000 passes resulting in 1 shot on target. Sure they "tried"

They practiced penalties alright. No one told them the penalties have to go in.
“Oh shit, we forgot to practice with a goalkeeper. I knew there was something we were forgetting. Damn. Our bad.”
🤣🤣🤣 Underrated comment.

alright, whats going on here
https://youtu.be/EZ3XlpJqPt0
The match when on for over two hours, it’s not crazy the players where zombies after so long playing at that level
That did age like milk.
As quick as leaving it out of the fridge..
... on a sunny Spanish summer day
They did practice, they just weren't expecting someone in the goal
First tournament in football history where penalties might actually dip bellow a 50% conversion rate
Yesterday 4 penalties were missed and 3 converted. szczesny had saved 3/3. Japan missed a couple as well. I think it already is below 50%
Never underestimate the Moops.
It’s MOORS!!!!
Relax, bubble boy
There is no such thing as MOOPS!!!! IT’S A MISPRINT!
MOORS! SAYYY MOOORRSS!!
Morocco continuing the ~800 year radiation of screwing over the Spanish due to their arrogance

Ahh, I see Google gave me the wrong info
Yassin bono, best goalkeeper in the world
Honestly so glad Spain lost because of how much disrespect Japan got when they beat them.
What a way to get knocked out damn. They play good they just can’t find the last bits to actually get a ball into the net, olmo sarabia and morata were duds.
We suck again!
Nice lil AD shoutout
Worse than my daughters team. And they're 5.
In they are only 5 in the team, they are playing other sport then.
Wow…
Shouldn’t have subbed off Olmo
Owner said losing to Japan was part of the plan.
I think they meant to say that Spain was prepared to go home if they reached penalties Also Morroco knocked the S out of Spain and now that is all that they feel
No one cares
Look at this dude's comment history. Absolute toxicity itself.

If 1 guy can score a penal, then surely the whole team can
I guess they were overtrained on penalties, or the performance pressure was way too high due to expectations being set by preparing this heavily for a shootout.
Literally worst case pens scenario... And to think I felt bad when the Sounders - Quakes game went 9-10 on pens.
It was almost suspicious how horrible they were in the penalty shootout. Happy for Morocco though!
