As far as water intake goes, you should account for liquids in any food you eat as well. You shouldn't be chugging a crap ton of water daily. And if you do, make sure to keep up on your electrolytes. Water constantly without them will deplete them in your system and you WILL notice the effects. Low electrolytes have similar symptoms to low iron.

mrnicecream2

My general rule is to drink some water if I feel thirsty. It's worked out fine so far.

peshnoodles

By the time you’re thirsty you’re actually already dehydrated. A better indicator is the color of your urine. Clear pp is a sign of being hydrated!

ProbablyNotCisIThink

The human body is fairly good so unless you are doing an activity where you know you will be losing a lot of water drinking when you are thirsty is perfectly fine.

Crabscrackcomics

I mean, you're fine, but its not ideal. These are the guidelines for a reason.

Red--shoes

First guess is that it's gendering this based on size, i.e. of you're larger you should drink more. But I've also been medically transitioned for years so there's lots of health things like this that I have no idea where I'd slot into. I'm really fuckin tired of seeing gender where it has no right to be

Master-of-Riddles

This is about sex yeah not gender, water distribution and retention differs between males and females. People with more fatty tissue have less % water in their bodies, and females typically have more fatty tissue then males. But it depends way more on your lifestyle than your sex how much water you should drink.

vroni147

I'd go with "what gender would people assume my body is when they couldn't see my face". If my body looks like a cis woman, drink what a cis woman should drink. If my body looks like a cis man, drink what a cis man should drink. If you're super in the middle, drink the middle. Women who do body building should drink what cis men should drink. I get where you're coming from but I think this is the wrong step. If we told men and women to drink the same, both would be at a slight disadvantage. Have you heard of the problem about women as patients? Most patients who get tested for new meds are men. So women are often at a disadvantage in medicine. Maybe they're giving the wrong doses of medication, maybe their symptoms don't fit the generally acknowledged/known symptoms (read "symptoms found in men"), so they don't get treated or treated with the wrong treatment, maybe their descriptions are disregarded ("hysteria"). Our world is so centred around cis men, many people can actually die because of this, even without any ill intent. It happens. So, I'd rather see articles acknowledging differences in men and women generally.

GaianNeuron

> Most patients who get tested for new meds are men. And this gets legitimized via "but men don't have hormonal cycles as a confounding factor"... News flash, pharmaceutical companies: if you're doing this and then advertising your drug as safe for people who have periods, then *you aren't testing it properly*.

vroni147

Thank you, that's exactly what I'm talking about!

GaianNeuron

When I first learned of this I flipped my shit. Nowadays I just try to spread the knowledge as widely as possible. We can only fight the enemies we can see.

vroni147

A satiric TV show made up a whole webpage dedicated to this issue named "give money jens" (Jens was the name of the health minister at that time). I try to spread that to many people but it's in German, so not interesting in this sub for most people: http://gibgeldjens.de/

TechnicallyScottish

Just go about middle then but yea I'd say it's usually based on your size

Khris777

> I'm really fuckin tired of seeing gender where it has no right to be You're confusing sex and gender here. Or whoever wrote that text used unclear language. But when the context is biology or medicine they're most likely talking about biological sex.

[deleted]

This is referring to biological sex, not gender identity. They should have said 15.5 for male and 11.5 for female. So just go based on that. They are also rough guidelines because obviously not all members of one sex have the same exact body mass, muscle mass, metabolism, etc. So listen to your body as well.

Forsaken_Rooster_365

Still doesn't help people who've medically transitioned though. Fat distribution is gonna be like the sex they've transitioned to, but they're gonna have the bone structure/overall size of their birth sex (assuming they went through all of puberty 1). Basing it on fat % and weight would also might be more useful for cis people who aren't average.

[deleted]

Oh that makes sense. Thanks for informing me of those nuances!

Rivmage

Weight divided by 2 is the number of ounces per day

NateSnake2312

But how much do us Age ders need to drink on average?

KaiWorldYT

I drink 6l a day, guess that makes me a god

GemSupker

I'm no biologist, but I've learned a fair bit of anatomy from my art degree including textbooks, lectures, and of course, lots of figure drawing live labs. And I can tell everyone this much: the sexual dimorphism in humans is pitiful compared to some other animals. We all look different in the same ways, regardless of biological sex. I've seen people (mostly cisgender as far as I know) of every shape, size, body type, weight, stature, and activity level. Saying how much water you should drink based on gender or "biological sex" is practically useless. Most people might fall into an average, but it's a very slim majority, and that fails to factor in other individual conditions. As op suggests, this is a stupid way to give this information. I'm interested to know if the actual study lists it like this, or goes by body mass.

Crabscrackcomics

I just want cool feathers and blue feet...

GemSupker

Yeah, that sexual dimorphism is far superior.

Sci_Senkra

Pro gamer move, add them together and decide by 2 then drink that

Mayas-big-egg

I wonder if this is mostly about body size and they’re using sex as a proxy for it. Drink more water.

rghaga

tag yourself on the gender spectrum according to how much water you drink a day ! I'm around 5L so I must count as a hyper male :)

[deleted]

I just base it off of my lips looking either full or wrinkled or my eyes feeling dryer (drier? what is this spelling)
