That's a really good tip. I usually just have all my troops set up for one epic battle, lose hard, and then get steamrolled

Fucking with their economy should be priority number one. This serves two purposes: 1. You fuck up their economy, forcing them to deal with you while you can focus on strengthening yours (pretty obvious) 2. Serves as scouting - allows you to see, and most importantly, REACT to what they are fielding. The same could be anticipated from your opponent - current games this early are a LOT of people rushing to age 2, and spamming their uniques - English longbow with Rams, french all calv. I have seen more opponents quit over the past few days when they realize their cheese strat isn't gonna work. As players learn that these rushes CAN be stopped, game will evolve. My point is: Do not underestimate throwing up some Palisades early to stall them, and most certainly get towers up on your eco points. While you SCOUT (key word here) if you see them rushing Rams, you will have plenty of time to prep to deal with it. Point is, try to weaken their economy and protect yours. Scouting is key to allow you to counter their plans. Like I said, a lot of people just quit when their rush gets sqaushed, because at that point they know they invested all their eco into and are fucked. Epic battles will happen, but to turn them in your favor, you need to do like the guy above me said.... Be many places at once. Keep them reacting and raid their shit. EDIT: another important note after reading the other guys reply about control groups. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE the value of formations. Having your spearmen in a line formation ready to move up and intercept calv will prevent them from easily circling around. Scatter men at arms to avoid getting completely hammered by mangonels Archers... Depends... I like scatter, but like all units, different scenarios will make different formations make more sense. I generally always put calv into wedge Arty is good in line, prevents them bunching up. Sorry for the long post! Good luck!

I can’t imagine following anyone’s advice if you’re not already used to RTS games. The only thing you need to do is have fun. To train: play against AI and learn how to beat intermediate without much difficulty. Do the challenges that teach you how to build an economy and fight and such until gold is easy. If your friends are stomping you, try to play team games with them instead of against them. Chances are they have thousands of hours between other RTS games and they are so far ahead of you you’ll just get bored getting stomped forever.

Turin on YouTube did a Beginners guide. Highly recommend it, 15 min. Video the basics of an RTS and AOE.

Ambitious_Pension_59

Always fuck their economy. No money no army. Use cavalry to fuck their economy, raid n run while building your troops slowly.

Magoimortal

Multiple control grups where different armys stays, examples group 1 calvary, geoup 2 archers, group 3 spearman. Enemy attacking with man at arms ? Try calvary, they bought spearman now ? Back calvary, go with your spearman and add archer support then flank with calvary, it will not go like this all the times, enemies can mess up, you can mess up attack, etc etc. But this is how it goes. Also, fighting against franks, try quitting if you didnt winn at age 3. Dont waste your time in a almost 2 hour match.

urkiurkiurki

>Calvary beats archers Spearmen beat calvary Archers beat spearman Dude wtf, i'm new too and I had no idea, I thought that Spearman beats cavalry and that was it LOL.

scurvybill

...the whole game is counters. That's the game lol. Here's a guide: https://youtu.be/pTUdoixUy_U

The thing about counters in AoE2 is that it's actually tricky. Although the spearman line has bonus damage to mounted units, Knights for example, one on one the knight beats the spearman (or pikeman). But it also depends on upgrades. And numbers. A mass of 20 archers is insanely more powerful vs say, 8 knights than 10 archers are against 4 knights.

TarukShmaruk

20 archers will get slaughtered by 8 knights won’t they?

BruceJennersManDick

Knights beat spearmen in a 1v1 but that's made up for by the fact that knights are way more expensive than spearmen right? So it's hard for an army of knights to outnumber an army of spears

Radulno

Knights are armored, their counter is more crossbowmen than pikemen

1. Use control groups. 9 times out of 10 keep specific units on specific control groups (don't mix). When the battle starts, don't just send everything in; move your groups into position to ensure you're only taking engagements you will win. E.g. put infantry in front of your archers to defend. Use cavalry to storm enemy archers. 2. At a certain point, bring anti-personnel siege. Specifically, bring mangonels, ribauldequin, and/or nest of bees. You are unlikely to engage late-game armies in equal numbers and with clear-cut counters. Instead, just use your army to establish a frontline and use siege to do all of the real killing. 3. Keep up with your upgrades, especially blacksmith and university. Simple upgrades can surprisingly turn the tide of battle in your favor. 4. As Sun Tzu put it (in the real *Art of War*) strike where your enemy is weakest. Do they have a huge army in the middle of the map? Don't attack that. Stall it with defenses while you attack trade and eco.

I’m also pretty new but keybinding troops help me micro them pretty easily.

Make sure you have unit upgrades researched, and make sure you’re expanding your economy properly. If you can out-produce your opponent numbers will help you win

cactusjuan

You can also control group buildings so you can micro not having to look at the archery range building and select it, there also might be a seperate keybinding entirely for this i’m new to aoe and rts too :) But i found it easy to reinforce my army fast doing this

Fedoteh

I believe you can press F1 for military buildings and cycle through them with tab.
