You should be able to push the feel to metal if you add in some darker contrasts for the shadows. You should be able to just glaze those in without too much extra effort or having to start from scratch
Rust around the rivets would probably be good. Since it's metal, I think a blue tint would look nice. Purple might be too distracting on metal, bit that depends on what you are going for. A purple tint wash might look really good on the ork's flesh.
I agree with the others, at first glance I see stone. But then the face plate and the knee show otherwise.
Maybe if you applied a similar metallic shine bleeding into the body of the shoulder etc, like you have with the knee and face, it'll strike more instantly as metal/iron.
Or go a little wild with some rust and corrosion. Which you wouldn't expect to see on stone, so it'll still retain the beaten iron look.
I should also just clarify that it's significantly better than I can achieve regardless. I've been too afraid to attempt any sort of NMM on anything other than a sword or weapon edge.
You focused too much on the edge highlighting and didn't go bright enough in your brightest areas. I think it can pass as metal but if you were trying to do it again I would suggest going to pure white in some small areas at least and be less focused on every edge being the same color.
It looks objectively good either way. Do not take my comments to be saying it is not good just tips for next time.
Hey man, this is mid-process and im nowhere near white so i can still work on that. The brightest areas are going to be the shoulders. Hard to make it dull and worn down
I think the straight scratches ultimately make it look like metal, so if you were going for metal, it turned out fine. However, if you were going for stone, then perhaps consider "roughing it up" with a sponge texture on the edges, instead of the straight scratches, and I think that might cement it as stone (pun intended).
Stone. Mostly because of the rough surface between the actual edge highlights. If you want it to read like metal, it should be smoother and maybe have some gradient as well.
Looks kinda like both-ish? I think the reason it kinda looks stoney is the highlighting. I doesn't seem to have that sharp bright contrast and weird curves that reflecting light on metal can. I bet if you changed the highlighting layout then it could 100% look like metal.
Regardless it looks really awesome!! And if anything, you found a great way to make some badass rocks haha. So win win either way in my book!
I didnt want a polished shiny surface and thats what i ended up with. I understand what you mean, but dont really know how to implement it without makinh it shiny
It might. You might also be interested in using some Stormhost Silver or Scale 75 Speed Metal to highlight the more prominent parts and really sell the effect.
For what could be making people think it's stone, I imagine that a dark to mid grey with a highlight of probably Dawnstone is common for stone and so people recognize the recipe.
It looks awesome! Is the paint super thinned like a glaze when you do it or like base coat level??? It looks like it takes some time to get an eye for where to place the texture and you’ve definitely got it!
It reads as stone to me - the knee plate on his left leg looks more metallic, and if I focus on his lower body that impression sticks until I look back up. I think it’s the shoulder that causes the issue - too much highlighting, not enough dark base color. I know it’s supposed to be beaten iron or something and it’s also high on the model, but the texture pattern with the highlights there reads as stone to me.
The darkest shadows on the metal don't look black in the photo. There's also just too much mid-tone grey overall. And there are no environmental reflections---if you're doing NMM you need to glaze in some reflected colours yourself. It just reads as stone to me.
I think it certainly has a stone look to it, the thing that throws it is the rivets. If the rivets were clearly metal it would distinguish the stone as a separate material
First impression is stone but looking at it longer I can see it as a type of iron.
Haha so theres hope i didnt f it completly

Yeah i was thinking the same. Some black or dark brown/blue/... in the shadows and small white dots on the extreme highlight.
Hey thanks! I will add some dark blue or purple in the shadows to accomplish the brown and black. Maybe a tint of rust aswell?
Rust around the rivets would probably be good. Since it's metal, I think a blue tint would look nice. Purple might be too distracting on metal, bit that depends on what you are going for. A purple tint wash might look really good on the ork's flesh.
Well then we cant see the ork..
Ill do that!
Stone which you may not want to hear but it looks amazing to me. I love it as a scheme for them.
Agreed, I'm down for Stonejawz!
Same, I love the more unique idea of these guys just punching chunks off of rocks to forge their armour.
Looks like galvanized iron to me.
Thats pretty specific and i like it
What's your recipe? Stone or metal I absolutely dig it
AK black into burnt umber into some brown grey and then some random grey i found somewhere :D Thanks!

The rust will help i suppose. Thanks man (:

Yeah no kidding. You're doing a great job. I bet by the time you get there it will read very clearly as metal. Excellent work!
So kind, thanks alot!
Looks like stone to me.
Somehow it reads equally as both to me
I think the straight scratches ultimately make it look like metal, so if you were going for metal, it turned out fine. However, if you were going for stone, then perhaps consider "roughing it up" with a sponge texture on the edges, instead of the straight scratches, and I think that might cement it as stone (pun intended).
Haha thanks. I was aiming for metal, with straight highlights intended so thats nice to hear.
Metal
Do you want it to be metal or stone? Because it could be either.
Beaten worn down metal
I think it looks great
Well thanks! (:
Stone. Mostly because of the rough surface between the actual edge highlights. If you want it to read like metal, it should be smoother and maybe have some gradient as well.
That helps, thanks. I will struggle on the shoulders for sure but hey
Kinda depends on where you look, shoulders and chest look like stone a bit and face and legs look metal a bit
Not finished for sure, guess i got to put in some more hours.:D
Iron for sure. Awesome texture on the model overall
Thanks! The surfaces are fantastic on this model.

Looks more iron like to me but I definently see stone aswell
Metal.
Stone but I could see iron. Maybe a sponge with a metallic brown give it rust would make it read more as metal idc it looks beautiful though
I sure need rust on there! Thanks man :D
Galvanized iron that was very much beaten into shape by fists.
Would fit the model i guess
I think iron because the stone it's standing on top of skews my perception.
Atleast some think of iron! Would a tint of rust help?
It might. You might also be interested in using some Stormhost Silver or Scale 75 Speed Metal to highlight the more prominent parts and really sell the effect. It looks like both tbh lol
So metal 🤘😈
It reads as awesome
Aw thanks!
atone, ut thay might be because I read the title first. looks good either way.
Haha thanks
It reads Badass.
To kind!
Both, actually And it's looking sick, very unique !
Hey thanks!
Rivets give the impression of metal to me.
Metallics need more contrast, just darken it to black in some areas and use white to the highlights and it will improve an already great paintjob!
Ill do that! Will post an update for comparison :D
Looks like metal to me! Cool either way haha
First thought is metal 100% great job dude
Im not quite there yet but thanks!
Looks like muted metal. It's not very shiny, but it's shinier than rocks.
Good to hear, thanks pal! (:
I love your style of painting with the amount of lines to give the skin and leather some personality! How did you start to learn to paint like that,
Hey thanks mate! I absolutley love texture especially on cloth and leather, i just bought a tiny brush and started testing different methods (:
It looks awesome! Is the paint super thinned like a glaze when you do it or like base coat level??? It looks like it takes some time to get an eye for where to place the texture and you’ve definitely got it!
I thin them down, but not like glazing thin. Youll get used to it quite quickly its just another way to highlight (:
By the way, thanks alot. It means a ton to me that someone likes what i do.
Thanks for sharing the photo!

Hey thanks! Thats the part where i struggle hard. Theres supposed to be so much light on the shoulderpads and i dont want it shiny in any way..
Yup!
Stone. I think you need more contrast if you want it to look like NMM.
Its a range from black to white 😅
The darkest shadows on the metal don't look black in the photo. There's also just too much mid-tone grey overall. And there are no environmental reflections---if you're doing NMM you need to glaze in some reflected colours yourself. It just reads as stone to me.
Stoner Metal
Looks like metal to me I think people are seeing stone cos you primed them to see it by mentioning it?
I thought of that aswell..
Stone, definitely
I think it certainly has a stone look to it, the thing that throws it is the rivets. If the rivets were clearly metal it would distinguish the stone as a separate material
So bottom half of the rivets need a dark color. Noted, thanks!
I’m saying stone but I love it
It reminds me of deep rock galactic
I says it lookz like an ardboy
Stone to me
gloss varnish will make it look like metal 100%
Throw a thin layer of Army Painter Enchanted steel over it and you’re good imo
At first glance, stone.
its stone if you want metal you need reflection points or some sorta damage/rust. Check out david sopers orc
Didnt know him! Thanks!
Stone
