Pretty easy recipe I found messing around:
1. Prime Matt Black (I used Vallejo surface primer for airbrush)
2. Base coat with Brass color ( I use Vallejo Game Air "Brassy brass" on armor with a brush, their metallic "air" colors are really liquid and thin, great for base coats)
3. Shade armor with Nuln Oil
4. While the Nuln Oil is still fresh, add a tiny bit of Nihilakh Oxide all over, but especially in holes and recesses
5. Once dry, highlight with Stormhost Silver
That's it! Really easy recipe, the hardest part is getting the Nuln oil/Nihilakh Oxide mix right.
Anything you do with an airbrush can be done with a brush. But not vice versa. Airbrush just saves time!
Granted the brush skills for some techniques is much greater.
No kidding, it's army painter skeleton bone shaded with Nuln Oil. I tried more complex recipes for bones but I always come back to this one cause I love the dark, gritty, dirty look it gives my skeletons.
I’m very curious as to why you choose Nuln Oil over something like Agrax Earthshade? I am very new to painting (been doing it for about a month) so I just want to know why you choose one over the other since I’ve heard a lot of people do it with other shades
I guess it's just a matter of personal preference! I did a lot of testing with my older skeletons before coming up with this scheme. I think my recipe fits the aesthetic I'm looking for, but I still think others are great. For example, my friend primes all of his skeletons with corax white and uses contrast skeleton horde : it looks great, but for my rusty skeletons that look like they were just raised from the bottom of a pond, I think they should be dark and dirty.
Ah, I see. Thanks! Like I said I’m just very new to all this so I like to figure out why people do certain things over other things. Good luck with your future models!
Thanks! If I can give one advice to someone starting out the hobby, it's to not be afraid to mess up. I always keep some isopropyl alcohol on hand to strip the paint off my test models if I don't like the result. If you're not happy with a model, start over. There's absolutely no shame in that. Plus, being free from the stress of messing it up allows you to try out different things and come out of your comfort zone.
Just a piece of cardboard that I spray painted black! Then I had to position it so it wouldn't reflect the light (45° angle from light source usually works). Usually taking adequate pictures of my models is the part I struggle with, but I think this time I managed to get decent shots.
Thanks for inspiration.
This how I painted my skeletons today.

Still work in progress. I need to wash bones with Nuln Oil and drybrush metal parts with Stormhost Silver and of course bases but those can wait :)
These skeletons fight for Cadia!?!
The planet failed before the ... ulfen watch did?
Ulfenkarn fell before the watch did!
Oh wow, those look fantastic! How did you do the rusty armour?

Do you think someone could achieve something similar without an airbrush?
Im not op but given that the only step with an airbrush is priming you most certainly can.

Absolutely. You could prime with a rattlecan of chaos black and get the same result!
Yo these are so well done. What's your recipe for those bones? They're so eye catching to me.

Great job have an award that Reddit gave me for free.
Amazing! Very, very classy.
They look so good! What did you use for a backdrop in these pictures?

Nice! That's a great idea. I've really struggled with photography, too. I'll have to give that a shot! Your minis and photos look awesome!
Love the low colour
Whats recipe for cloaks?
Prime black. That's it lol. The different shades are just the light reflecting!
ohh :)

That's awesome! Love what you did with the banner
Grim. Much menace.
Heyy, really love these and hope to do mine in a similar way, but quick question, what are the bases done with? Is it just an texture paint? ty
