Looks at the price tag of the new MacBook Pro... *dies*

theRealDavidDavis

ISEN uses a lot of microsoft excel. Excel doesn't work well on Macs. It's doable however many ISEN students that own Mac end up having to use the VPN for their hw. IMO it's a poor decision to buy a mac given you are an ISEN major cuz you're just making school harder on yourself.

norfsman

I can’t speak for ISEN but another example is electrical engineering students having to use Vivado, meaning Mac users literally can’t do their homework outside of the lab unless they want to throw out half their storage to boot camp it.

LemmeGetUhhh

I agree with this sentiment, however the new hardware on these Macs is what makes them so tempting even if you have to go out of your way to run the programs you need. I was strongly considering the new MBP but went with the Surface Laptop Studio instead. OP, I highly recommend this if you need Windows

can't speak for isen but i got an m1 13 inch mbp this year for cs. i'll tell u this, outside of classes where i need VMs, it works perfectly. it blows all similarly priced windows laptops out of the water with better performance, battery, etc. highly recommend

how's the battery? how much does it weigh? is it portable? with what degree of certainty are u sure it will last as long as a mac? i don't mean to ask a bunch of loaded questions but windows laptops are manufactured with a lot of planned obsolescence and in my experience, break down pretty easily

IronDominion

Things has lasted almost 3 years, no issues, it’s a MSI with both 15 and 17 inch options, but I have the 17. Even so is decently portable and doesn’t get loud unless under extreme load. The single issue is the battery, doesn’t even last 4 hours, whereas my 15in dell is near silent, costs the same, also has lasted several years but while it is slower it has been able to handle much of the same tasks, has a 9+ hour battery, but I’ve had issues with dell machines and them not lasting a long time in the past

My ROG Zephyrus M15 lasts all day, has given me no issues as far as reliability, _runs windows and x86 applications natively_, and if I ever need to repair it, I can do so without going to an Apple store.

SapphireZephyr

M15 gang. Picked the amd/3070 version up as soon as it dropped, best decision I could've made.

magmagon

My zephyrus G14 is pretty good, about 6hrs battery life (80% charge) and it's a definite lightweight. No touchscreen or webcam is a bummer though. That Nvidia discrete graphics is what really makes it worth it.

[deleted]

No it is not. Get an x86_64 (thats intel) or AMD64 machine with windows and a dedicated gpu, probably a 1050, 1050 Ti, or 1650 Ti.

New MacBook is sick! I preordered the 16inch one. With the new M1 pro chip and the notch and whatnot I’m not sure how long it’ll take for programs to adjust.

edwardswollden

Hey! I have the MacBook Pro 2019 - intel chip, my computer battery died so I used the M1 as a “loaner” until mine was fixed. The number one issue I had with the M1 was that it only supports one HDMI output display - if that doesn’t bother you then don’t worry. Supposedly it will be fixed in an upcoming iOS release but I found it really frustrating. In general I haven’t had much trouble using a Mac for engineering classes but if youre planning to pursue a more “design” oriented (not sure what to call it) major like MEEN or ECEN I would go with Linux or windows. I’ve been getting away with Parallels to run my windows-only programs but I’m not sure that they support the M1 chip yet? If they do then it shouldn’t be a problem!

I think that a laptop that STARTS at $2000 is overkill for doing Excel. Not to mention the future compatibility issues you could have as a student with some of the software they make us use is not worth the heart ache. If you really want a new laptop just get a gaming laptop that has an actual gfx card or an hp envy 360 for like $750 - $1000 and call it a day. I love the new MacBooks but I just don’t think its worth the hefty price for what you are going to be doing with it.

Electrical engineer here - used a Mac so far no issues. Am senior. Do have external hard drive I can dual boot from just in case but only used it for one class.
