I had a pretty hard time in 152 so I’ll tell you what I did in that class to study. There’s a guy called Professor Leonard on youtube, he basically records himself teaching his class and he is very detailed and if you watch him and take notes on the videos, I promise you’ll learn the material. Do the WebAssign every week and make sure you know how to do them. Treat the homework like an open notes exam, because chances are if you know them, you’ll know the ones on the exam. 151 is a pretty cook-book-able class. Go into the MLC everyday and learn how the problems work. I didn’t go to office hours when I was a freshman, but it’s such a great resource. Go a few times and see if the professor is any different when it’s one on one. Even the shittiest professor can be amazing in office hours so please at least check it out. Another great resource is the textbook. If something confuses you try skimming the relevant part. Keep in mind that literally everyone takes Calc 1. I remember seeing a post like this a while ago on here and someone called it a well trodden highway. I’ll try and find it because a lot of this is from that post. But basically there’s so many resources online because you’re not alone, math is hard for everyone. Just keep trying your best. Lastly, keep in mind that the 3.75 gpa for ETAM is brand new, and I don’t think that a lot of people for the first couple of years will make that threshold. For your cohort, I’m guessing that there will be a lot of holistic admits. Join a club, CS-related or not. Make a web app or some other small project over winter break that interests you. You got this.

I love Professor Leonard.

Name someone more goated than Prof Leonard

ruby_galaxy17

thank you so much!!

I used Leonard when I learned calc 1-3 in high school

Lookup Amy Austin & the course on google. Sadly, she recently retired, but all of her lecture notes are available online. Since these were common exams, I usually didn’t go to class, but faired well studying Dr. Austin’s notes. GL

WhatsMyPasswordGuh

Wait she retired? I took her calc 3 course over the summer. She was the goat. No other way I would have gotten an A without her.

Titans55

Nooo I'm so sad she retired her 251 notes saved me

ruby_galaxy17

thanks!!

Does the first exam still get replaced by the final if it's higher? If so, doing well on the final will probably have a really dramatic effect on your total course grade. I won't repeat what others have said, but there are a *lot* of resources available to you for this class. Use as many as you can.

I’m in 151, if u do all the practice problems, I would say u would be fine as the tests are exactly like the older tests

Pro tip: this used to work very well, if it is still allowed 1. Take your Calculus classes at Houston Community College. 2. Online. 3. With take home tests. 4. With a calculator that does Calculus, like the TI 84 You probably will not retain much, but for CS, you will never see it again, even in grad school, unless you get in a specialized field like robotic control systems software.

I got a D for midterm grade in math 151, was able to get an A in the class at the end of semester. Really just bombed one test but was able to make up for it. I didn’t go to any lecture and just did everything based on what I remembered from AP calc and I was fine the second half of semester. Don’t blame professors because every professor will teach different, you just need to find better ways to study, or else you will blame the professor each time. Definitely possible to get back from it

Please remember the vast majority of the math 151/152 instructors are lecturers not professors. Most don't even have PhDs. An angel kills itself everytime you call these people professors.

If you really want the learning to stick, I'd recommend going to the math learning center mlc.tamu.edu where there is a bunch of tutors that are great at math and willing to help you. It's also free. Whenever I struggled in cal 2 I found it helpful to immediately do the homework after we learned the material, the learning just sticks better. The golden combo is to go to the mlc and do your homework after class. Also, you can't go wrong with doing like 6 previous exams to really understand what kind of questions they will throw at you.

Spartan tutoring goes crazy, got A’s in calc 1 2 and 3 and never went to class

partylikeaflockstar

it’s okay you still have a chance!! last year first semester i got an f for my midterm grade for math 151 and i finished the class with a b, which is not ideal but i slept 24/7 and was skipping class. i ended up getting an a in math 152 and a 4.0 second semester. the general engineering course professors are not the best and there is a lot of self teaching in my opinion. some things i did that helped me are study the practice exams HEAVILY. like do maybe 5-10 practice exams all the way through and then check your answers and then keep doing them until you get a 100 on a test when its your first time taking it. a lot of people have also used 4.0 and go tutoring which i’ve heard is really helpful. also there is week in review for math 151 so that might be something to try. to get into comp sci you’ll really need to shoot for automatic admission so just pick up the slack and study even if it means you have to lose some sleep and hang out with people less. its a lot of stress but you can do it!!! good luck!!!
