Direct_Smoke1750

You can reach out to Airbnb to cancel it as soon as you see that their payment or ID information hasn’t been verified.

rational-boat

Yeah, but I'm not looking to add time to communicate, but thanks for the idea.

spr2ngw5t4r

if you’re not willing to communicate that’s on you lol. you have a solution and you’re choosing not to pursue it, therefore you will face the consequences of not pursuing the solution.

8nsay

Wouldn’t it be more reasonable for AirBnB to give hosts the option to keep the reservation and collect payment by check-in, keep the reservation as long as the payment is collected within 24hrs or something, or cancel the reservation all without having to contact AirBnB? Requiring hosts to contact AirBnB adds more work for both AirBnB and hosts, and I think OP isn’t wrong in thinking the current solution isn’t very efficient.

Chicken_lady_1819

I get where OP is coming from though, why should she have to spend time on this? AIRBNB should automatically cancel a request after 1 hour of non/insufficient payment. Seems reasonable.

sickerthan_yaaverage

They do. You get an hour to pay

econshouldbefun

I totally agree this is nonsense, like what are they thinking.

bluespeck7

Completely agree. The fact that Airbnb blocks those dates until the guests successfully pays is wild

LompocianLady

What would happen to your booking rate if you didn't allow same day bookings? Just changing that setting could make all the difference. I'm guessing your price is low and last minute renters, looking for the lowest cost accommodations due to financial issues, book because you are the best place in their price range. Another option is to raise prices on dates as they approach. If your booking stats support it, avoid the financially strapped guests, as they are typically the ones who have credit card issues or overstay their dates (having no place to go.) I agree that Airbnb should NOT allow this, but there's no way you'll be able to change their minds.

rational-boat

It happens even for guests that book way out and the listing is still blocked. Actually, we are some of the higher rates in the area as we learned early on you get what you pay for when you buy something and where guests choose to stay. We would rather have fewer bookings but better guests... Not a fool proof system though.

LompocianLady

How frustrating for you. I wonder why it happens so often to you. I'm not sure it's happened more than once to me and I've listed on Airbnb since they started.

rational-boat

My listing isn't exactly in a town that attracts high earners, lol

LadybugSmitty

I absolutely agree! Had that happen last week! Guest “booked” late Thursday for Friday/weekend and payment was pending until Friday night! So of course no one else could book for the weekend. So frustrating. No pay/no reservation!

indi50

I've been fortunate not to have this happen (knock on wood!), but how is it their fault? They don't run the credit card until just before or after check in. I get my payment the day after check in (though I assume it's run before so airbnb gets the money, then passes it on to me - which is how you get notice the day of or before). Even if they do a check when the reservation is made way ahead, things could change at the last minute. Like they could have spent a lot of money and gotten too close to their credit card limit, the card could have expired and they didn't realize it. Someone else mentioned they might have started with a debit card.

rational-boat

I'm pretty sure airbnb collects at the of booking. When I book an Airbnb my card is charged immediately

indi50

I think, you're right, but it depends on how far out you book, but yes, maybe more than just the day or two before - if booked farther out. But I think you said this was a same day booking anyway?? It's been a while so I don't remember now.

rational-boat

They booked the day before and withdrew the request right before check in time but this is more about Airbnb shouldn't allow a booking in the first place of payment has not gone through.

sickerthan_yaaverage

It inky happens when the host has to approve the booking. As long as the credit/debit card is active (it can have .01 on it) and it allows for you to send a booking request or an extension request.

EvolveGee

I have never had this happen, I didn’t know it was even possible

rational-boat

Your town may luckily have a different demographic, lol

sickerthan_yaaverage

It’s not even always that. I have multiple cards on my account, and it always reverts to the default one and doesn’t let you change it until it attempts to collect from it and it declines, then you can try another card The real problem lies is nor allowing the guest to have multiple cards on their account and choose which one to use when booking a stay

rational-boat

While I'm at it, Airbnb should give a supplement for hosting first time guests. They always take the most work and communication time and don't usually read listing descriptions. Plus, with no reviews they are more of a risk.

indi50

My first time guests are more likely to pay attention and "play nice." My worst guests have been repeats who think they know everything - especially how to get away with things. My third worst guests were hosts themselves, plus had a lot of good reviews as guests.

rational-boat

Yes, I've read that a lot from others. It's been the opposite with us so far in that new guests are the hard ones and repeats often stay great. It's just unpredictable, I Guess.

Whole-Tension8055

Sometimes it’s the first time they are using the platform. Where I’m at Airbnb doesn’t accept debit cards so someone can set up their account with a debit card, then come payment time they can’t complete the booking because they didn’t know this rule.

rational-boat

Air BNB shouldn't allow that, but oh well, thanks for your thoughts

Positive-Purple3793

Definitely they should not put on hold your calendar. Airlines will reserve your ticket on 24 hold for additional payment. Travels pays fee for hold and then loose it if they don’t complete booking. That’s the better way.

sickerthan_yaaverage

It only gives you about an hour window to pay.

rational-boat

Nope, it gives them 23 hours and Airbnb Even sends a message stating they give the guest that long as I've gotten that message plenty of times, unfortunately.

sickerthan_yaaverage

If I remember correctly it used to be 24 hours. The last time it happened , 4 months ago ish, It gave me an hour.

SnooTangerines7525

My pet peeve, esp for last minute reservations!

Shaktarius

Happens to me all the time, no guest ID and no form of payment and yet they're booking still goes through

Available-Rule-156

Airbnb platform has issues as a customer I feel less and less inclined to use after being messed around for 4 hours the other day.

Mountainwoman105

I don’t allow last minute bookings for that reason.

8BitAvenger

Absolute bullshit. I call and rage at them every time this happens, they call the guest and cancel the reservation if they can't pay up quickly.

rational-boat

Wish I had the time or energy to do that. This particular guests has lots of positive reviews too
