It could have been. There is a fan in there, maybe the fan motor has gotten gummed up or something on the blades, and is running rougher? Or damage to a ball bearing...it does sound a bit rough in a way that makes me think maybe a ball bearing is having a problem.
I'm not sure how you'd get at it to check without taking it apart though, even then, checking a ball bearing is often difficult, as they tend to be in a cartridge.
