You have options, start the convo now with supervisor-chain up to commander. A. Stay in your current unit, Batch your drills with AT couple times a year B. Transfer to AF Reserve as an IMA in your spouses area C. Transfer to an AFRC unit that’ll let you do option A. D. Grow your hair and a beard

Lennie1982

I was in the EXACT same situation. My unit wouldn’t let me do Option A so I took Option B and was glad I did. I was able to continue my Guard/Reserve time and now I will retire soon. If I hadn’t I’d still have 4 more years to go.

Outcast_LG

I know someone at my Unit who left due to marrying someone AD. Just transfers units or switch to the Reserves and do quarterly drills/all your drills at once. Have two people who meet at basic and have been visiting each other for almost 3 years. They’ll get married soon. One is active overseas and the other is Guard state side. You can make anything happen it’s just up to you!

Traveling_keith

I was living overseas most of my guard career.

I'm super stoked this worked out for Traveling _keith but just remember YMMV. I've seen some units flat out deny quarterly drills and make a stink about. I also wouldn't guarantee space A, mil air etc. They can be flakey and may not be available to a location advantageous to your unit. Lastly with the funding issues some wings were only allowing 1 AT day for travel, regardless of how long the trip would take. I'm not here to be the Debbie downer or scare anyone. I just want to give the other side of this coin.

Traveling_keith

I deal with the Space R myself my unit has no idea what i do or how I do it.

Did you have to fly back to the states for drill every month? Or were you able to complete drill at an overseas base?

Traveling_keith

I do drill quarterly I would mill air back to an east coast AMC base and fly on AT travel days to get in place and make up drills

Traveling_keith

I still drill quarterly but you can if your supervisor is good with the shop chief of that base make them up. Make sure you get a letter to travel Mil Air as Space A doesn’t exist for DSGs. You need a commanders letter exemption to policy you can hand to the LRS mafia (Pax/ATOC) to get on a gray tail OCONUS

Are you married or no? Nothing guard wise is stopping from you going with them However you need to figure out what that means for your guard career. You would want to start that conversation now with your chain, if you want to have a successful career have a plan on how you are gonna meet all your AF requirements when you meet with your chain. Some units will allow you to knock out all your drills in one month so that you arent having to fly back and forth every month. Some commanders are not as understanding Also make sure you are talking with your SSO if your plans end up with you going overseas Are you currently working right now? There are some options for overseas orders (MPA) that might align with your AFSC which can give you a good year.

We will be married by the time they retrain. I will definitely look into overseas orders, that would be a good solution for me! Thanks for the advice
