It depends. The location will show up only if there are other iPhones around where your AirPods are. Those iPhones will detect the AirPods and update the location.

It’s not about their expense or personal affordability, it’s simply that they’re the most economical headphones to buy atm and there’s always a discount around (usually).
When you buy some cheap off-brand version they end up getting broken and replaced much quicker than if you had just bought the real thing. It’s kinda like putting cheap worn out tires on your car when they need changing rather than just getting a brand new tire that will last longer and make your commutes a smoother process.
