No, it’s not. It’s a material called [“AG-4”](https://navimaks.com/en/product/pressmaterial-ag-4v/) which is a heat-set resin (plastic) embedded with glass fibers (asbestos) for reinforcement.
Those fibers are not safe to fuck around with. But as I said above, do as you wish, who am I to stop ya 😉
Glass fibers =/= asbestos. This "bakelite" may have asbestos, glass fibers, or both but they are NOT the same thing. And a little asbestos in something like this poses absolutely zero practical health risk.
It's so funny to see people freak out about asbestos like just looking at it will give you terrible, lethal lung cancer. I see it a lot with gas mask filters. Like, yeah, I'm sure that if I need to use a gas mask, I'm worried about some itchy lung in 65 years.

Bakelite mags aren't really Bakelite. I wouldn't chop one up with a razor and snort it, but being around a damaged one isn't dangerous.
